The weird thing about buzzing people in at schools is...how are they supposed to know whether someone should be allowed in or not? When I go to my children's school, they just look at me and buzz me in. We have to figure out a better way....THIS isn't working to keep our babies safe!!

ID cards! No one, who is not scheduled to be at a school should be allowed in. If someone, who is not scheduled to be at the school should be dealt with by a resource officer employed by the school.

BUT, it appears, from reports, that the shooting happened as morning announcements were being made and the school was most likely not completely locked down yet (school buses running late, parents running late, etc...). It doesn't appear to be any fault of the school's or lack of security during school hours, but two people who knew the loopholes at the school to carry out the most horrific plan of attack that I have seen since 911.

having trouble processing this. Awful. Just awful.

Shooter in school is my biggest fear for my kids. I cannot be with them 24/7. When I send them to school I have to take it on faith that they are secure, safe.

Prayers for all involved and families of victims.

WTH?

I got off the computer, turned the tv off all morning to play with my 5 yr old son. We listened to Christmas music and danced around while playing Batman. Something told me to check my facebook and find that some coward shot and killed children. Even though I'm in TX this coward has me on edge wanting to go get my 1st grader from school.

[Newtown school shooting] NBC News reporting second person in custody

Clarification on the NBC report: Person in custody, may be second individual connected to CT school shooting (not two in custody)

I know in my son's school which I am sure is like most other schools, there are multiple doors, cafeteria doors, courtyard doors, hallway doors, most if not all are to remain locked.

What I hate is when I see parents that are TOO lazy to walk out the main doors and use other exits for convenience(even though there are signs on doors). I have mentioned this to school but I bet this happens every day in schools all over, not to mention kids who may exit doors.

Reports say LE looking for a purple van, so maybe that's why. Seems they think someone else involved is on the loose. Hope not!

Thanks, I thought I heard that before...I keep flipping stations. Purple should be easy to spot.

This is the first I've seen anything about a social worker. Makes me wonder if the parent had a scheduled am meeting with the social worker and principal.

Some reports indicated "school psychologist".

CT put out a call for more Medical Examiners, as they do not anticipate having enough to perform all of the necessary autopsies. :(

ITA...no one should be allowed into the school where the children are. Have them go to administration area that is not connected to these children.

The schools have to change there policy NOW. I cannot stop crying....Now they are saying 18 children dead.

Law enforcement sources told Miller that preliminary and unconfirmed information indicates that the shooter was the father of a student.

The shooter was killed and apparently had two guns, a person with knowledge of the shooting told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way.

If the shooter was the father of a student, that might explain why he would have been buzzed in. (Operative word: If)
