Mark my words. He didn't wake up today and snap. There will be clues all along the way.

Autism is not the problem here. Neither is depression. It's leagues beyond those things.

There is always a linear acceleration of behavior. Either nobody wanted to see or nobody wanted to deal.

I agree that if there were warning signs there they should have been noticed by someone. At what stage did this individual become detached from reality or whatever to the point where he felt that this was acceptable behaviour? Why was nothing done earlier to ensure that this did not happen?

Dont get me wrong, I don't think autism or depression was to blame - quite the opposite. I can see this leading to fear of people with such conditions when actually that fear is misplaced.

Jumping in late but watched this unfold on TV along with social media.

I'm not seeing any other reports other than on here that there is a missing GF. Has this been confirmed and where did this come from? Sorry if I missed the link earlier, the thread went for clean up and it was moving far too fast for me to catch everything.

Was there anyone in the woods? And from how I'm understanding it, A had his brothers ID on him, and I'm guessing that is how they went to ID him based on the info that he had mortally shot himself in the head. Since "A" is 20, I'm wondering if his older brother allowed him to have an expired ID to get into bars or anything? That would explain why he had it to start with. (it could have been an old State ID and not a drivers license). Now when you get a renewed state ID or license, they mail it to you rather than taking the expired one and tossing it while giving your new one.

Not sure if there is a whole lot that has been confirmed other than that it's a devastating tragedy but the missing gf was reported by the Associated Press.

A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that Adam Lanza’s girlfriend and another friend were now missing in New Jersey.

Good Christ. How unbelievable.

I wasn't in my own classroom today. I was at my daughter's school for a special program. I cannot fathom the horror the survivors must have seen.

Yes apparently crisis therapy was/is /and will be needed for all the first responders.

I am in shock personally. This is only 9.5 miles from where I live- but this is our society's problem. Maybe we should stop the myopic war on terrorists and FIXIT here at home...if we see something say something...about the people we are afraid of in our communities, maybe in our homes, and maybe in our classrooms. yes we really are our brother's keepers.

<snip>

Peter Lanza,
father of the shooter, Adam Lanza.
conflicting reports on his status as some assume he is the deceased male found in the home with the deceased mother, Nancy Lanza. but also reported that he and Nancy are divorced as of 2009, and that dad, Peter resides in Stamford. IMO unclear of his where abouts or if he is deceased or alive.

Thanks for any clarification anyone can give me about the tentative info listed above as I understand it at this time..

TIA.

Fox News has been reporting several times in the last hour the Father is alive and cooperating with Law Enforcement investigators in NJ in support of the ongoing investigation.

In answer to your tweets, no, Of course i will not be interviewing children from the school. I do not think that is appropriate at this time

I'm wondering why is it so hard to get a clear positive ID on all the fatalities in this case? Unless there is a suspicion of something truly diabolical - switching clothing or bringing other children to school who aren't students there in order to kill them, it seems it would take me under 2 hours to have a firm, positive ID on all 30.

Anyone who has ever gone on a field trip with a class knows a school can tell you immediately which kids didn't get on the bus that were expected - and a teacher could simply look at her class roll, parents can pick up and sign out their kids, and those who weren't picked up are the pool of names you draw from.

Why in the world is it taking so long? This must be agonizing for the parents.

Assuming the teachers aren't all shot to death also.

And for those staff and faculty who were blessed not to have been murdered, there is the very good chance that the children weren't easy to visually identify, depending on the range of the shot and caliber of the bullet.

And this is not a place where one would want to be careless in the interest of expediency.

Then how did little brother have his ID?

I fault the media, and not these parents, for allowing these children to be interviewed. Even those parents whose children returned to their arms are likely in shock and an immense amount of grief. I can just see an opportunistic reporter cornering them with a story about how scared people at home are.

There is little any of those parents could do now I would find fault with. I live in another country now - still held my own children, crying - yet I cannot even begin to imagine the pain felt by those so close to such devastation. MOO

I really respect your opinion, but I fault the parents with this one. Without a parents consent, the media would not have access to their children. The children should be at home or at a church or even at the pediatrician's office and not talking to the media. These children have NO IDEA the magnitude of what has happened, but they will! When it all sinks in, there are going to be hundreds of children truly hurting and need of professional medical help to deal with what has happened. There are very few parents allowing their children to talk to the media, so there are many parents who are more than likely doing exactly what I said they should be doing. But the few parents who have given the media access to their children are 100% at fault.

Many mass shooters in American history were diagnosed with Major Depression.

There are degrees of depression and I'm not of the opinion that is the reason for this.

Would you not say a long-festering rage would be at work here? Rage is not depression. Rage is rage and it doesn't appear overnight either.

We may have to agree to disagree on this. I think a huge problem is that there isn't enough help available. I'm not saying that this is the case in this situation as we don't know enough about it yet, but I think more support does need to be available. If more support is available then those who are displaying worrying behaviour would also probably be picked up earlier, controlled and perhaps bad circumstances like this being avoided.

There could be a million top notch psychologists available but if an adult does not want to see one there's really not much you can do. I think we're talking about two different things here.

Keep in mind, as easy as it may be to blame "troubled young males" or any other specific group, this problem is so much larger than that.

One of the very first school shooters was the female shooter that took out a few kids on the playground across from her house. She used a rifle.

For every odd guy in the neighborhood that mutters to himself and lashes out verbally, there are just as many people that are holding back their true feelings and would love to walk into work tomorrow and take out their boss and 20-30 co-workers. Some of them will do it, most of them won't.

I have no answers, but the questions don't seem nearly broad enough.

There is bad, bad language in this Onion story, but it may be the only 100% accurate report I've seen so far. :(

ETA: Whoops, language is so bad the URL got censored -- but it's the top story on their main page.

That is absolutely the most accurate and well-written media report I've read so far. Pretty sad when only the Onion taps in to what everyone is pretty much feeling as they learn this terrible news.

You are so right! Without money there is no help available! Cash or health insurance is necessary up front!

JMO but gun laws would have made no difference in this case. Also criminals don't go through legal channels to get firearms.

Like everyone else, I'm anxious for the truth to finally come out. If you read Ryan's Tweets, it certainly sounds like whoever was posting there was extremely depressed and angry. Hmmmm ...

I assumed that this was what your post (below) inferred. It is in the interest of all Americans that those who are mentally ill receive treatment.

I'm working my way through a book called "The Insanity Offense" based somewhat on your comment bbm above. A must read, imo.
Excellent perspective on understanding how the mentally ill need and deserve comprehensive help as much as society needs and is entitled to protection from the potential danger. Very interesting but now's not the time for that conversation.
