OT/ Suzanne Collins lives in the Sandy Hook section of Newtown - Hunger Games author. I knew Sandy Hook rang a bell.

My niece is of elementary age (2nd grade) and even here in Florida is has affected the children. My sister and brother-in-law have been talking to my niece; reassuring her of her own school's safety. Now imagine how much this has affected the children who were actually in that school? Telling me that any of these children should be talking to the media, at all, is crazy, IMO.

We're talking about elementary aged children. Not High School children who are better equipped (mentally) to deal with such trauma. And going back to Columbine, these children, all teen-aged-children have had to have years and years of couseling.

Who was the guy they got out of the woods? I don't have a link - it was live on CNN first thing this morning - when it was all just unfolding. I saw the K-9's with the officers and then one officer leading a guy in handcuffs out of the woods right in front (back?) of the school. It was said that the guy told people he walked by that he didn't do it. I saw it.

So now if AL was the shooter and RL is in New Jersey - then who was this guy? Honestly, at first, my first thought was that he was a hunter - he was in camo. I don't know. But I do know what I saw and they did get someone out of those woods by the school at the very beginning. If he wasn't involved at all - then let us know. But confirmation one way or the other would be appreciated.

I have no idea what this man's mental health problems were. I can only guess.

I do know that Major Depression frequently has comorbid conditions. Over 50% of those with Major Depression will have another mental health disorder.

I don't know what it is you seem to want a debate about.

Here's what it boils down to---this guy was out of his mind and cold-bloodedly shot lots of small children and some adults. Does it really matter what the names of his "disorder" is? I couldn't care less what was wrong with him. I'm sure the parents and loved ones of all the dead don't care either.

Its troubling to read how quickly autism/Asperger's is thrown into the mix. I've seen it here, has this been confirmed?

As the mom of a child with Asperger's Syndrome and what I know of other people with Asperger's, tying horrific crime to someone with Asperger's really is surprising to me.

I saw an awful thing on CNN earlier. The broadcaster was interviewing a mother of one of the children who has survived. Her daughter was standing next to her. A journalist who I presume was from a newspaper came over with a dictaphone and started trying to interview the child. It made me so angry. How dare that journalist do that. That poor child has been through much. Have some integrity!

Can the media interview and air a minor without a parent/guardian's consent? TIA

No but it doesn't mean the media goes "can we ask your kid a few questions". Sometimes, depending on how small they are (IE local only) they may just approach, see if the parent is receptive and they continue.

Has any information been released about the person taken from the school in handcuffs?
I don't think so, though I admit the info may have slid right by me at some point.

That surprises me - is there really no way in the USA for someone to be sectioned - ie taken into hospital for treatment to stop them harming themselves or others? I find that shocking if that's the case and agree that does need to change. It's only used in extreme circumstances here but does happen if necessary.

It is VERY difficult and if they are able to put on a reasonable act, they aren't taken.

Dementia is another area where it is VERY difficult to have someone put on psychiatric hold for---many times they are also able to put a "normal" face on and are left at home.

It's unbelievable the firestorm of HORRIBLE reporting today just to get the story. I can't imagine the backlash this will have not only on the families of the victims but the shooters family as well.

Just unacceptable

At this point I would think its safe to assume that a parent would know if their child is with them or not. Unfortunately, the only children left in the school are deceased. As a parent...I couldn't even imagine.

What I heard on the local station was that the parents whose children have perished know. They were all called together and told at one time. 2 passed away at the Hospital. :-(

I think they have to make sure one by one LE made a BIG deal about this at the 5 pm presser. I am not sure why.
maybe some one is in shock or at home or away and forgot to call the school to report their child is absent and or safe?

OMG! How is that SAD?

It was a school. 20 children who probably still had all of their BABY teeth are dead.

This is honestly not the place to argue this and I am sorry, but please, a least for today, can we not say that the only thing that went wrong today was that there weren't enough guns?

No, it's not the place to argue but you can equally say what went wrong today was there were too many guns.

You've probably missed the multiple posts I've made saying it is NOT autism that is the problem?

Yes and no. (Not a professional, so posting based on personal experience.) If someone has harmed themselves or is making threats to harm or kill themselves they can be placed in a mental health facility against their will, but usually only for 72 hours, and most of them learn pretty fast that if you just stop making threats out loud, they will send you home.

If you are threatening to kill or harm someone else, they can do the same thing, usually for the same amount of time, but often, because of staffing, budget and legal issues, they can only get them into a facility if a medical pro or law enforcement official hears them make the threats.

With juveniles, it is easier to get them into treatment, long term, however, even then, with blatant signs of mental illness and obvious danger to everyone, it still takes a lot to get a child taken care of. Being mentally ill does not reduce the rights of an adult at all, so 99% of the time, if they don't want help, it can't be forced upon them.

Breaking News is always hard to believe. It usually takes a day or two before all the details become facts. The media has to be careful on what information is released. There is nothing more tragic than a parent finding out their child was killed on a breaking news broadcast.

Hitting the thanks was not nearly enough.

Why oh why oh why can people not read the FACTS AND THE STATISTICS. Less guns=less gun violence. Not an opinion, it is a FACT.

People have been armed to the the teeth for how long? I am not disagreeing with you, but what is going on in these times that causes these lunatics to go shooting everyone including babies?

May God be with the families that have lost their babies. I can't even fathom.

FWIW my grandfather was murdered in cold blood at a fairly young age by a kid. Shotgun. My grandmom and mom have always said it was the kid and not that shotgun that murdered my Pop.

Again my prayers are with the family of these babies.

I am also the mother of a son with AS. And using AS as an excuse isn't going to fly on Websleuths. If he had AS, that didn't cause this carnage. I think the only reference to AS at this time was a rumor on Twitter so let's not let this grow legs and wait until we learn more.

I'm not Pensfan, but I think when something like this happens, people want to know "why". It's human nature to try to make sense of the senseless
