I've been wondering where Adam was when his mom was sitting a bar two or three nights a week????

I work for a pokey and I sure don't agree that it is worth the risk. It's a risk I wouldn't take for my own child because I've seen too many young men get worse once they are incarcerated. A juvenile detention center is filled with kids who are awaiting trial for some very violent crimes such as homicide or armed robbery. In my state, a child who is there with mental health issues would be placed in safe-keeping, i.e., isolated to the point they must take their meals in their cell and they are never there just for one night.

"If handled correctly" is the operative part of my previous post.

In the case of the adult Aspie, he was a batterer. After spending time in jail - and then suffering the consequences of his arrest - he never hit another woman again until his dying day. He was done with that and done with jail and being on the wrong side of the law.

It's not going to work for every situation, but I sure don't like seeing the conversation sway to the side where Aspies shouldn't be held accountable for their behavior.

http://bigstory.ap.org/article/ap-atf-says-conn-gunman-not-ranges-recently

Debora Seifert, a spokeswoman for Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, says Adam Lanza and his mother each fired at shooting ranges. They also visited ranges together.

So he drove and had access to at least one gun to go to a shooting range alone.
The same article says: "NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) — Federal agents say the gunman in the Connecticut school shooting fired guns at shooting ranges over the past several years, but there's no evidence he did so recently as practice for the rampage."

I think his computer might hold the key to that. Hopefully, they will recover enough to determine it.

Thank you Kimster. That has been a question in my mind from the first moment's I heard what had happened. I posted as such, in the first thread.

I'm still chewing on this one too. The Columbine killers were bullied and I think the VA Tech killer was as well, right?

I assume he was at home playing on his computer. Being a parent to a high maintenance child doesn't mean you're not allowed to leave the house. It's legal and can even be quite enjoyable to have a drink now and then if one is over 21. And if she was looking for colleges for him, and if he had taken college courses by himself in the last 3 years she must not have felt that he needed 24/7 care the way he did when he was younger.

I've worked in corrections many years and I have yet to see our system have inmates as "outpatients." Once they are convicted, they are incarcerated with other psychiatric patients.

It's also sorta a moot point because I've seen no indication Mrs. Lanza asked police to in any way intervene with Adam.

I didn't say they were convicted of a crime. The appointed judge in my city didn't charge them with a crime when they came before him but gave then NGRI and sent them to our very excellent state hospital forensics unit where they got excellent treatment.

wondering who the first responders are, in that area. I know I haven't seen all the footage but from what I did see it looked like the first responders were in uniform?

the first responders here are trained civilian volunteers who "come as they are." they arrive in whatever they are wearing at work or at home when they are paged

DD/SIL were first responders for many years, she was a daycare provider (before earning her RN degree) and he's a welder

I've been haunted by what the SH first responders found when they entered the scene. one horrendous thing I can't stop thinking about is, do you suppose some IDs had to be made on something besides facial features? because in some cases the faces were destroyed?

I comfort myself by knowing that those fine folks will receive any/all counseling they need

BBM:
The Newtown area has a professional (paid) police department and a Volunteer (unpaid, but professionally trained) fire/rescue department. Both agencies are part of the "mutual aid" state wide program and ALL 169 state entities are capable of receiving State of Ct. Trooper assistance (some smaller towns have a resident Trooper rather than a police force).

:twocents: Identification was made by photograph, :rocker: H. Wayne Carver, II M.D.:rocker: is one of the greatest protectors of human dignity and psyche, EVER! The crime scene was horrific but HAD to be documented prior to individual parental identification/confirmation. Many times one discusses with a "id'er" body features: moles, scars, beauty marks, jewelry, hair color, eye color, braces, glasses, outfit, etc to enhance and increase the points of confirmation of identity. (it also blunts the impact a bit)

Counseling is/has/was and WILL BE available as needed (PRN!) and thankfully, from what I've observed, NOBODY IS PLAYING "macho man or woman"!

Unfortunately, I think your idea of "handled correctly" and that of law enforcement differ greatly. Cops are trained to protect the public and protect themselves first and foremost. I'm glad it worked out for your friend but lock-up detention facilities are not the right place to treat mental illnesses in children. We've got an inmate with the disorder and he spends a lot of time in the "hole." He's got some serious issues with confinement.

Yes, in the past 6 months. But my point is he had access to at least one gun!

holy crap! how did THAT happen, that these precious pearls slipped through the crack. I'm swearing, but not posting it. Bless that man.

Thank God THAT happened. Those are the kids who ran past the shooter while seeing their teacher and friends shot.

I just can't understand why the mom would have all this firepower around knowing she had such a disturbed son! He must have known how to access the weapons without her because he shot her in her bed with her weapons so it does not seem as if he forced her to unsecure them in order to continue his rampage. I don't want to attack her because she was ultimately victimized but I can't help but think it was a terrible idea to have all those weapons in reach of a kid who could not feel pain or connect with others well enough to understand their capacity for pain and suffering.
I have been one who has several times posted focusing on my questioning of the contradictory issue of mom obviously being keenly aware of her sons's instability, and at the same time having an arsenal of weapons..

as of today I feel I am finally getting a sense of what was behind this mothers choices regarding the firearms in the home..whether she was "right" in her belief and therefor her actions WRT to firearms IMO obviously the answer IMO is that she was very sadly mistaken, incorrect, etc and its that mistake that is in fact a large part of what happened in Newtown on Friday.. below Donjeta's post touches on the issue that I believe is behind pretty much the entire decision on this mothers part for why she was doing what she was doing WRT Adam and firearms..

(but I will say this that we do not know what the security provisions were that this mother had in place..as I personally tend to lean towards the likelihood this arsenal of guns and ammo WERE NOT JUST LAYING OUT AT ADAM'S DISPOSAL. in fact I believe just the opposite and that it is because mom had them locked up is the reason that she was killed.. I find it vey plausible that this single mother had one gun that was not locked up and it was for protection..IMO likely this gun was used to kill her thereby Adam at that point with mom dead had full access to getting into the locked up guns and ammo)..<--- of course jmo and only a guess at this time..but no different than the guess others are putting forth in guessing that mom had all the guns and ammo just laying out at her sons easy disposal..

either way we just don't know..but clearly IMO as you'll read below in what was mom's intentions with involving her son with firearms..one thing IMO is certain and that is that it was clearly an unwise choice that she made regardless of the good intentions that the decision was based upon.. and that choice IMO does unfortunately play a large role in this tragedy..

Here's a friend of NL's and I think that whatever the diagnosis this symptom he describes (difficulties in bonding, connecting, expressing emotion, being affectionate) is probably rather important in what was wrong with AL:

so, again as I mention above I think its finally coming out what this mother's intentions were with why she had made this choice of introducing her son to the use and handling of firearms.. in her mind it was about healthy fear, creating the utmost of respect, therefor leading to the responsibility that is necessary in the world of firearms...

and again I think it is obvious that no matter how good the intrentiins were on why she chose to involve her son with firearms..in hindsight obviously it was a horrendous mistake that's cost was brutally high..

I personally have a better understanding in now knowing what it was that was in Nancy Lanza's mind in her having these firearms in the home..and tho, it obviously was a grave mistake, IMO the intention is still a piece of that puzzle that was very important in knowing, for me personally at least..

I wonder if this was the trigger, did he want Independence or did he think his mom was trying to push him out into the world.

she had spent months going over his options for engineering schools, Hanoman said.

“They had recently gone to many different colleges looking for the right program for Adam, and the right living situation,” he said.

“He wanted to study engineering. Nancy was going to move wherever he was going to go. Not to live with him but to live near him.

“They were looking at schools in Seattle and one of the Carolinas. “It was his goal to be independent.”

thanks for posting this and while I see some may not agree that this had anything even remotely to do with what happened Friday, I on the other hand couldn't disagree more..

the above are huge, life altering steps made in any human beings life..important and key to their future...now magnify that times thousands and place a distorted lens on viewing such a life altering step in this individuals life and IMO I can see exactly how this type of movement toward life altering change could very very easily be processed in a manner of distortion that would set off great alarm bells of fear, terror, and anxiety in this individual..
