I just can't understand why the mom would have all this firepower around knowing she had such a disturbed son! He must have known how to access the weapons without her because he shot her in her bed with her weapons so it does not seem as if he forced her to unsecure them in order to continue his rampage. I don't want to attack her because she was ultimately victimized but I can't help but think it was a terrible idea to have all those weapons in reach of a kid who could not feel pain or connect with others well enough to understand their capacity for pain and suffering.
I have been one who has several times posted focusing on my questioning of the contradictory issue of mom obviously being keenly aware of her sons's instability, and at the same time having an arsenal of weapons..
as of today I feel I am finally getting a sense of what was behind this mothers choices regarding the firearms in the home..whether she was "right" in her belief and therefor her actions WRT to firearms IMO obviously the answer IMO is that she was very sadly mistaken, incorrect, etc and its that mistake that is in fact a large part of what happened in Newtown on Friday.. below Donjeta's post touches on the issue that I believe is behind pretty much the entire decision on this mothers part for why she was doing what she was doing WRT Adam and firearms..
(but I will say this that we do not know what the security provisions were that this mother had in place..as I personally tend to lean towards the likelihood this arsenal of guns and ammo WERE NOT JUST LAYING OUT AT ADAM'S DISPOSAL. in fact I believe just the opposite and that it is because mom had them locked up is the reason that she was killed.. I find it vey plausible that this single mother had one gun that was not locked up and it was for protection..IMO likely this gun was used to kill her thereby Adam at that point with mom dead had full access to getting into the locked up guns and ammo)..<--- of course jmo and only a guess at this time..but no different than the guess others are putting forth in guessing that mom had all the guns and ammo just laying out at her sons easy disposal..
either way we just don't know..but clearly IMO as you'll read below in what was mom's intentions with involving her son with firearms..one thing IMO is certain and that is that it was clearly an unwise choice that she made regardless of the good intentions that the decision was based upon.. and that choice IMO does unfortunately play a large role in this tragedy..
Here's a friend of NL's and I think that whatever the diagnosis this symptom he describes (difficulties in bonding, connecting, expressing emotion, being affectionate) is probably rather important in what was wrong with AL:

so, again as I mention above I think its finally coming out what this mother's intentions were with why she had made this choice of introducing her son to the use and handling of firearms.. in her mind it was about healthy fear, creating the utmost of respect, therefor leading to the responsibility that is necessary in the world of firearms...
and again I think it is obvious that no matter how good the intrentiins were on why she chose to involve her son with firearms..in hindsight obviously it was a horrendous mistake that's cost was brutally high..
I personally have a better understanding in now knowing what it was that was in Nancy Lanza's mind in her having these firearms in the home..and tho, it obviously was a grave mistake, IMO the intention is still a piece of that puzzle that was very important in knowing, for me personally at least..
I wonder if this was the trigger, did he want Independence or did he think his mom was trying to push him out into the world.

she had spent months going over his options for engineering schools, Hanoman said.
“They had recently gone to many different colleges looking for the right program for Adam, and the right living situation,” he said.
“He wanted to study engineering. Nancy was going to move wherever he was going to go. Not to live with him but to live near him.
“They were looking at schools in Seattle and one of the Carolinas. “It was his goal to be independent.”
thanks for posting this and while I see some may not agree that this had anything even remotely to do with what happened Friday, I on the other hand couldn't disagree more..
the above are huge, life altering steps made in any human beings life..important and key to their future...now magnify that times thousands and place a distorted lens on viewing such a life altering step in this individuals life and IMO I can see exactly how this type of movement toward life altering change could very very easily be processed in a manner of distortion that would set off great alarm bells of fear, terror, and anxiety in this individual..
jmo.
