This just came out in my neck of the woods (Sarasota, FL) I've had a cough for 4 weeks after getting off a cruise.... thing just won't go away.

I saw that, and also saw that they have 2 cases in Hillsborough county. I live in Pinellas county, and today had trouble finding any hand sanitizer in stores around my house. Thanks to tips on here, I did locate some at Office Depot nearby.

Does anyone else on the thread have a compromised immune system? Now that we have a couple of cases in Oregon I told my husband I wasn't leaving the house.
I do. About 95% self-isolating, began stocking up three weeks ago. Staying safe and prepared.

My mom is 83. Looks 63. Is at university working on her master’s degree after finishing a double major last year. No joke. She went through Nazi occupied Holland during WWII, had her tonsils taken out without anesthesia at age 4, had a root canal without anesthesia at age 9, had a blood infection and almost lost her arm, also at age 9 and had mumps, measles, whooping cough- pretty much every disease we now vaccinate for.

She’s smart, sharp and has the purest, kindest soul. I hope she has that rugged WWII immunity that will protect her but losing her would be a massive loss to those who know her and love her. And that’s a huge number of people.

It baffles me that people discount a disease just because it only affects the elderly or those with conditions. Awful. My mom’s life matters.
It sounds like she is definitely a survivor! I feel so blessed that I still have my mother in my life. She is 90 years old, and I share care with my SIL, she stays with me for 5 days and then back to my SIL for 5 days. I worry about her health with this.

Interesting! Could that help explain the higher numbers in Italy too - that's another smoking culture.

Maybe?

jmo
Many more smokers in Europe is what I always observed while visiting. And I have been to many different European countries.

Or perhaps just more evident since they did not do the "no smoking" regulations as quickly and and vigorously as other places such as here in the US.

Good breakdown of where USA cases came from, from CNN

"More than 90 cases have been reported nationwide, including:
  • 45 former passengers of the Diamond Princess cruise ship, the site of a recent outbreak and quarantine
  • 3 Americans recently repatriated from Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the outbreak
  • 17 people believed to have contracted the virus through travel
  • 26 people who got sick from another person in the United States, including some who don't know who the source was"

Replying to my own post from this morning (above).

So the latest from Mr. Stew is that there is one nursing home facility in the county not accepting any patients with COVID-19 symptoms. If they have/had symptoms, they must be tested and negative.

All clinical staff are being fitted today with this:

View attachment 235701

It's a 3M FT- Respirator Kit.

I'm so thankful they are looking after the caregivers.

Afternoon Update:

There is a nursing home in King County who will not accept any patient who has been on the "Eastside", where Kirkland is located. I'm still trying to ascertain what "been" means, exactly.

Several family nursing group homes in King County are wanting to isolate their patients from the outside population, including from caregivers...we'll see what happens.

Great, son called. He's got the flu and is at work. DH is a physician and instructed him to go right home. I haven't heard any reports regarding coronavirus in the city where he lives, but there's an airport and university in the area. This has become a little more personal.

Paws tightly crossed for your son. This is regular flu season after all.

Who are "these" people?

I think it means ones who are under observation who were exposed but not symptomatic and those with symptoms awaiting testing to come back. And of course, also ones who have tested positive but don’t need hospitalization. My hope is that they are taking this seriously and staying in home isolation. Of course there’s always a rebel in every bunch.

Why they are not shutting down this area is beyond me...

A follow up to Saturday's analysis of undetected #COVID19 transmission in Washington State. Trevor Bedford on Twitter 1/11
As before, the genomic data support a linkage between the case WA1 from Jan 19 and the case WA2 from Feb 24, both from Snohomish County. 2/11
This suggests that the case WA1 infected someone who was missed by surveillance due to mild symptoms and a transmission chain was initiated at this point in mid-Jan. 3/11
Because the case definition from mid-Jan until Feb 27 required direct travel from China, any of these subsequent cases in the transmission chain would not have been tested for #SARSCoV2. 4/11
Assuming an introduction into Snohomish County on Jan 15, Mike Famulare @IDMOD_ORG simulated onward transmission using consensus epidemiological parameters curated by the @MIDAS_Network (midas-network/COVID-19). 5/11
Running these simulations forward with a mean doubling time of 6.1 days, we estimate the number of current infections in this transmission chain on March 1 to be 570 with an 90% uncertainty interval of between 80 and 1500. 6/11 Trevor Bedford on Twitter
In addition to this "bottom-up" approach, Mike used a "top-down" approach in which we accounted for the single positive screening result out of the number of samples screened to date along with census information. 7/11
This approach leads to a similar estimate of the number of current infections at 330 with a 90% uncertainty interval of between 20 and 1500 infections. 8/11
We believe this particular transmission chain will have a foci in Snohomish County. We're working as fast as possible to understand extent of spread in the greater Seattle area. 9/11
Please consider this to be a preliminary analysis. We are actively working on this and will continue to update our numbers. 10/11
We are hugely thankful to @SnoHD, @KCPubHealth and @WADeptHealth for their support and clear thinking for state and local public health. They are doing a fantastic job. 11/11

Sorry to repeat info already posted. I've been out all afternoon and have only been popping in to and post a little bit. I miss a lot at this thread is rolling at a rapid rate.
I know - same here! IMO, it's okay to repeat info as I think most people are popping in to read as much as possible, but can't keep up with every post.

My problem with ‘prepare for the worst, hope for the best’ is that it is important but not enough. Many govts playing wait and see. But they will always be behind the curve. What about ‘prevent the worst’. Social distancing is costly, but so is inaction.

I'm worried about quarantines in U.S. because of this Department of Labor info:

"The U.S. is one of the two developed nation without guaranteed paid sick leave. More than 1 in 4 private industry workers don’t have this benefit including more than half in the bottom 25% of the wage distribution, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Making matters worse, many workers who don’t have access to paid sick leave work in child care, restaurants, hotels, and travel where they come into contact with many people everyday and could help spread the virus. In these service occupations, more than 2 in 5 of the workers don’t get paid sick days, according to the Labor Department."

How two uniquely American issues could make the coronavirus worse

Last week, I ordered something I never thought about but with my lung condition and Doctor Campbell Posts on such, I purchased it. A pulse oximeter.

These are amazing. We have one and it was crucial to us knowing we needed to get my doctor to the ER a few years ago. Excellent purchase!
