TBH, I have never understood bidets. Just don't they get germies flowing back down on their spout merely to squirt germs that live on those spouts to the next bum?

Nope. Not designed like that.

Kai Kupferschmidt

To get an idea of how difficult it would be to replicate China's approach in other countries, imagine what it would take to apply either of the below measures in a US city.
Kai Kupferschmidt on Twitter

That means (to pick a few things):
- intensive contact tracing. In Wuhan alone > 1800 teams of 5 or more people traced tens of thousands of contacts
- building two dedicated hospitals in Wuhan and pulling health care workers from all over the country

- everyone had to wear a mask when leaving home (that’s why Aylward is wearing a mask in the photo, press conference was in China)
- aggressive social distancing: closing theatres and schools, cancelling gatherings, suspending public transport

- the government used two mobile phone apps, AliPay and WeChat, to keep track of people’s movements and enforce restrictions
- and, of course, they locked down the whole city of Wuhan

To be clear how lockdown worked: With households locked in, the virus had nowhere else to go but to other members of that household. Wait long enough and everyone in the household is exposed and transmission ceases.

So China beat down the virus. Two things to watch now: 1. What happens as measures are relaxed? Mike Osterholm says it’s "like suppressing a forest fire, but not putting it out. It’ll come roaring right back.” This is why everyone is watching those China numbers so closely.

What measures a society deems warranted will also depend on how severe and how deadly the disease turns out to be. And there is still a wide margin of where that can end up. So: Really tough decisions in a situation of huge uncertainty. Welcome to an epidemic!

The US central bank has slashed interest rates in response to mounting concerns about the economic impact of the coronavirus.

The Federal Reserve lowered its benchmark rate by 50 basis points to a range of 1% to 1.25%.

The emergency move comes after the G7 group of finance ministers pledged action earlier on Tuesday.

It follows warnings that slowdown from the outbreak could tip countries into recession

Officials have pushed back against criticism. “We cannot do what China has done here, that would start a panic, runs on supermarkets & banks, & any contingency measure has negative effect on businesses & the real economy,” - German gov't official involved in crisis management

This is what’s going on in Iran amid #coronavirus outbreak. Reminiscent of early days of COVID19 epidemic in China. My friend, a journalist from Iran just translated this video and confirmed the authenticity, I’ll post it shortly. (Video by @HeshmatAlavi)

DH just got back from Sam’s Club run for standard work supplies including water. Said it was crazy on the water purchases. They are limiting people to 20 and people are trying to steal extra through the self checkout lines. Managers and security up front to try to keep it all in line. They got a semi load of water last night and it’s almost all gone. He went during the businesses only hours and it was still that level of crazy. For the record we only needed 4 and I don’t think they are limiting Topo Chico or unsweetened tea or sodas. Lab is set for a month or two.

Is the run on water due to people with wells not on city water?

Target sees ‘aggressive shopping’ in response to rising coronavirus cases
Target has seen “aggressive shopping” as people across the U.S. respond to rising cases of the coronavirus, CEO Brian Cornell said in a Tuesday earnings call. The Minneapolis-based retailer said it’s increasing inventory to keep up with heightened demand for household essentials and food and beverage. He said the “surge in store traffic” has underscored the importance of brick-and-mortar locations, even as more of its customers shop online.

Shoppers are loading up supplies online
Late Monday, Instacart said its growth rate over the past 72 hours surged 10 times its normal pace. In California, Washington, Oregon and New York, the growth is even faster, 20 times the normal volume. Searches for hand sanitizer are up 23% week over week. Vitamins are the second most searched item and those searches have risen 12% week over week. Rounding out the top five most searched items are powdered milk, face masks and canned goods.

Top CDC official tells Congress coronavirus almost qualifies as a global pandemic

The World Health Organization will likely deem the COVID-19 coronavirus a global pandemic once sustained person-to-person spread takes hold outside China, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention official said.

The current outbreak already meets two of the three main criteria under the technical designation of a pandemic, Dr. Anne Schuchat, principal deputy director of the CDC, said in prepared remarks to be presented before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. “It is a new virus, and it is capable of person-to-person spread,” she said. “If sustained person-to-person spread in the community takes hold outside China, this will increase the likelihood that the WHO will deem it a global pandemic.”
