New York City already making plans if crematoriums are overrun so they will use prisoners to bury patients in mass graves on Long Island.
If the epidemic grows there could be 26,300
new patients needing ventilators of which the
city now has only 1/6th of the numbers they would need. Face masks will also be in short supply.
In Case of Deadly Coronavirus Outbreak, New York Plans To Use Prison Labor to Dig Mass Graves

You know it's bad when they do this....now they are letting loose all the infected ones to the population...
Temporarily????

Iran temporarily releases more than 54,000 prisoners in an effort to combat coronavirus in crowded jails Iran frees 54,000 prisoners to combat coronavirus

US will soon put travel restrictions on more countries, TSA chief says

US travel restrictions in “additional countries” will soon be announced by the Trump Administration, Transportation Security Administration Administrator David Pekoske said today.

The current restrictions generally apply to non-US citizens who have been in China or Iran in the last two weeks.

Pekoske did not say which countries will be added.

Is the run on water due to people with wells not on city water?
There have been a lot of warnings that services could be disrupted so I guess this could mean even city water supplies.
If the employees maintaining things are out sick, some services will be disrupted. Same w/ utility/electric companies.

I was asked to sanitize my hands before voting :p:D
A pleasant surprise.
And promptly resanitzed afterwards

Is the run on water due to people with wells not on city water?

Possibilities:

#1 - Many people don't want to go out when/if there is an epidemic in their area, so are stocking up for a month for the family
#2 - So that if they go out if epidemic, they don't have to use others drinks/water cups that might be contaminated on the cups, they have their own vessels (they just watched Contagion perhaps, or they don't have to stop on a trip to purchase a drink from somewhere ?)
#3 - They are used to doing such whenever there was a hurricane to prep.. so they are on automatic pilot
#4 - They have company coming in from out of town in the next month, so buying now (my situation)
#5 - Easy to store non-perishable, so why not purchase as is TP

I'm sure there are others... but many folks that do water, I would assume, know that it's manufactured in the US so can be ramped up by manufacturer.. as is toilet paper in US and elsewhere.

The Governor of Washington State should be able to demand the CDC and FDA provide testing kits to be used specifically to test all group care center AND their healthcare providers in order to determine if quarantine is needed.

This is indeed an emergency situation.

I'm not talking about testing an ambulatory population of low-risk people at a mall or a basketball game.

This is testing a population that is high-risk, are heavy users of Emergency Responer systems ( ambulance, EMT, Fire Dept). Contaminating the emergency responders and infecting them, or even sending them into self-quarantine is indeed the Nightmare Scenario that is evolving.

Exactly!

Gosh, some of us here really need to be in charge. I have been listening to the Washington press conferences as much as I can and I am disappointed in some of the things their officials are saying.

One theme I have noticed is as they were questioned about testing, they alluded to jumping into a mode where they are not following individual cases, but following and treating clusters. Fine, but please START doing a good job of the individual case tracking and Contact Tracing because we just heard from you for the first time last week.

Dont give up on reducing/eliminating as many local individual and cluster breakouts as you can.

I don’t know other than a lot of people don’t drink Houston city water. Honestly it’s not very good compared to other parts of the country. I mean it won’t kill you but most people I know drink bottled or have filtration systems. I think they are preparing for a hurricane type situation and in those, the city issues boil water ordinances I think. Honestly I don’t pay that close attention because we are on well and have gravity fed water filter. I know work crews like to stock up on the bottled for being outdoors so I think it’s a fairly lean supply regardless (never like this though). Plus some of the shipping channel boats stock up here as well. Someone bought two pallets online and they told him he could only buy 20. Apparently there was a screaming match going on.

I used to hold the CDC in high regard, but it doesn't seem to the agency it once was. It has been incredibly slow with testing in USA. Seems like things are starting to move now, and with more testing, it looks like we'll see the numbers jump - so brace ourselves for that.

As Coronavirus Numbers Rise, C.D.C. Testing Comes Under Fire

"Most disturbing of all: Did a failure to provide adequate testing give the coronavirus time to gain a toehold in the United States?

'The incompetence has really exceeded what anyone would expect with the C.D.C.,' said Dr. Michael Mina, an epidemiologist at Harvard University. 'This is not a difficult problem to solve in the world of viruses.'”

This is very disturbing, I've read several detail accounts of lax manufacturing practices at the CDC. IMOO, the CDC created stringent guidelines because they didn't have a reliable test. NOT to use the Germany test, adopted by WHO is insane. Who do these folks at the CDC think they are? Putting our country at risk.

I am grateful the FDA stepped in, allowing private companies to produce the kits. Private industry will mass product an accurate test, that's their forte.

The president can utilize war powers...

The Defense Production Act, passed by Congress in 1950 during the Korean War, allows the president to expand production of the materials for national security purposes. Mr. Azar said that the federal government could move to expedite certain contracts, including for supplies like face masks, gowns and gloves. Mr. Azar has said that 300 million of a type of mask known as N95 are needed for the emergency medical stockpile for health care workers.

Government Eyes War Powers to Speed Medical Manufacturing Ahead of Virus

IMOO, Mr. President needs to go ahead and exercise this power. Mike Pence and the Surgeons General telling me not to wear a mask, is just not doing it for me. 3M has clearly stated they can not meet the demand.

Having the task force should bring resolution to the problems exposed thru media. The FDA moved quickly to bypass the CDC on testing.

I'm hoping for more testing, quarantine facilities with meals and essentials, and its time to activate the National Guard. We must contain those infected. China has proven this is the only way to stop transmission. Home quarantine is not effective; health dept must do home visits, increasing risk of transmission, its hard to take care of ourselves, prepare meals, etc with severe flu.

Hoping to see more action soon....

one thing I completely forgot about and only remembered cause the tube is getting low - toothpaste!
add that and floss and mouthwash to the list
FYI, I use peroxide as a mouthwash. Always have. Benefits - clean white teeth. More benefits - kills germs (bacteria and viruses).

Lots of people here buy water on the regular, because sometimes what comes out of the tap doesn't taste so good. (King County, Washington)

Some of the stock up of bottled water here, per friends, is because it is something they regularly purchase, and if they end up being quarantined at home, or if stores close due to an outbreak or so many employees call out sick they have to close, they still have their "regular" supply of water at home.

Agree,
The Feds are still minimizing this whole debacle. even locally here in Fl. Slow to react,
not current info, and telling people they're LOW RISK.
Meanwhile NYC, which has experience with tragic catastrophies is making plans for mass burials.

I see the CDC website is still only being updated on CV19 numbers on Mon-Wed-Fri.
wouldn't it behoove our gov't. to add some extra workers to be able to provide accurate, up to date information to our citizens.

Enough of restricting information during a potential national crisis.

Clearly they need to increase mask production instead of claiming masks aren't effective.

I'm not buying the Surgeons General recommendation to NOT wear a mask. Every photo I see has everyone wearing a mask, the U.S. should be not different.

The task force needs to find a way, come up a manufacturing plant, pay a company to open one ...whatever it takes!!!! I want masks!!!

MOO...

I just got back from my calm and rational buying vs panic buying ;). Forget hand sanitizer, there is no rubbing alcohol anywhere. I went to Aldi and Walmart and saw only wiped out shelves in the rice, beans and rubbing alcohol and hand sanitizer sections here in north Georgia. I am so glad I bought that stuff earlier. I saw carts with loads of bottled water and lysol but not a ton of people shopping.

Last night it suddenly occurred to me that spaghetti squash and butternut squash are a great food storage idea since they are fresh instead of frozen or canned and stay good for months. So that rounds out my mostly vegetarian food storage. I really only need to order a few immune boosters off Amazon. And go get a bunch of animal feed this afternoon.

Now I need to catch up on 6 more pages!
