Where in LA County.....it's a very large area.
2nd COVID-19 case confirmed in L.A. County
This article has 6 cases in LA, and 2 presumptive in OC:
LA announces 6 new coronavirus cases, declares state of emergency

Last night's news from CNN & DM etc. was covering panic buying at Costco stores in various places, Seattle of course, and Miami, New York iirc. My friend in LA said that local news showed panic buying at a local Costco, too. The store was out of (you guessed it) toilet paper, disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer - before these new LA cases were even newsworthy.

I won't say where, but I have no cases here in my county. I went on regular shopping to Walmart yesterday evening and found this:
- store was very empty of shoppers, probably 50% of normal and this is my usual weekday/evening hour to shop there
- there were only 3 packages of Charmin toilet paper left in a vastness of empty shelving set aside for Charmin
- the Angel Soft toilet paper has warehouse/pallet type stacked space and was down to about 20% left. I have never seen this, even on a normal Saturday (busiest shopping day of the week) night before restocking it's never less than 50-75% full
- disinfectant wipes about 50% empty shelves and they were currently restocking with their own brand which was more available than major brands like Clorox, Lysol which were still available but not much left
- no Comet cleanser but they had Ajax
- GLOVES I need single use polyethylene type gloves all the time and cannot wear any of the others. They were sold out earlier in Feb and I could not buy them, and the racks were still empty. They had plenty of thick rubber and latex gloves, but they were very, very low, just a couple of packages left, on single use latex and vinyl. I did not check in the medical area for blue nitrile.

Just another Walmart report :) from an area where we are joking that we won't get CV19 because we are too poor to ski in Italy or take cruises to Asia. I cannot say that people are panic buying here, but it's likely that the whole nationwide distribution system is under strain at this point. I have seen public activities continue as normal, all the parents and kids at daily sporting events like softball and soccer, very crowded, and everyone going to work as normal.

Unfortunately, if others panic buy and hoard, you must also buy extra or you may have to do without.

Carry on - this is a great thread for condensed info! Thank You!

I can easily see Seattle becoming "Wuhan" in less than a month. Or worse.

Hand sanitizer, washing hands, staying home when you are sick is basically pablum offered for the masses. If you get it, just hope that you can ride it out.

"May the odds be in your favor."

Yep, everyone has just thrown up their hands on this. So angry at what SHOULD have been done, what might have been done had we still had a pandemic team with a concerted effort across the board but nope, starve that govt beast til it is dead.

Takeaway #1: all the people who don't wash their hands after they use the bathroom, need to start getting slapped

Takeaway #2: People might also want to lay in some ultraviolet germ zappers (think I saw Sharper Image with one touted for use in hotels); and there's one that made its debut on Shark Tank as well

Takeaway #3: maybe already here on this thread, but for anyone who has not seen the real-time (or close enough) Johns Hopkins database:

Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS
I've got a niece at Johns Hopkins. They're doing a great job. I believe the health professionals are all trying. Many MD's have expressed frustration at the lack of info (was also on the news), but hopefully the info flow is getting better.

I just got a text that an elderly woman from that Grand Princess cruise ship has DIED in Placer County, CA in the hospital where she was in isolation. Placer County is the east end of Sacramento, and slightly north all the way to Lake Tahoe..

She could have been at Kaiser in Roseville, Sutter Roseville, Auburn Faith Hospital in Auburn, Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital in Grass Valley, or Marshall Hospital in Placerville. I am very familiar with the latter 3 of those hospitals.

Roseville is essentially part of Sacramento

Passengers from that cruise from San Francisco to Mexico are being tracked for testing.

The author of the analysis, a computational biologist named Trevor Bedford, said there are likely already at least 500 to 600 cases of Covid-19 in the greater Seattle area. He urged health authorities and the public to immediately begin adopting non-pharmaceutical interventions — imposing “social distancing” measures, telling the sick to isolate themselves, and limiting attendance at large gatherings.

“Now would be the time to act,” Bedford, who is at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, told STAT.
Washington State could see explosion in coronavirus cases, study says

My husband and I decided not to attend a concert in Seattle that we paid big $$ for because of the stupid corona virus. :( I believe it was the right decision but I'm still sad.

And on the home front I just got an email from our local grange canceling a dance because of the virus. It added that there may be more cancellations in the near future.

I feel like a prisoner.
I share that feeling of being a prisoner, as I'm sure many others do. But I'd rather be around and we'd like you and all the others to be around too. :)

Is this the latest confirmed CA death or is this another? (a second?)

BREAKING: California reports first coronavirus death in Placer County
Thank you. It's all happening so fast now, it's hard to keep up. That jump to 9 deaths in WA yesterday was shocking enough.

We are going to the grocery store tonight. We always have some emergency extra on hand, but I really do expect the distribution channel stress on delivery of goods is going to become severe...

I respectfully disagree. The CDC lost the pandemic response team, had positions frozen and lost funding. Who can do a job in that situation?

Yeppers....

I would consider thinking that Dr. C, (who the poster you quoted was just posting Dr. C's words, not the posters) and many many of us here, AGREE with that. We are not blaming the personnel, just the institution which is underfunded, and chit happens when regulatory and short staff and lack of resources happen. As with in the future, when folks die, we shall not blame the health care workers as they are stretched, underfunded and overstaffed without the right equipment to best do their jobs. Does that make sense?

Sometimes it's hard to understand individuals' postings unless you know their backgrounds on how they post over time ... and what is posted is subtle so we don't get into political iykwim???

Anywhoooo, I was the OP to bring it up... so that's my stance as to what I meant. I quoted w/o opinion.... I need to do more "winks" so folks will know I'm sitting on hands wanting to say more. Which I often do, believe it or not ;)

....back to catching up!

We are at 10 now :(

Washington state has confirmed the death of another, taking the toll there from nine to 10, while the first death outside that state has also been announced in Placer County, in California, were a resident has died.

By the time people actually feel "sick", if this virus is like Chicken Pox, they were exposed 2 to 3 weeks prior to feeling sick. And spreaders 2 to 3 days before they stayed home, if they did.

So, we could see quite a bump in the virus in Seattle over the next month.

This senate hearing is frustrating. I feel like they are getting some incorrect information.

Received a call from my Fidelity financial adviser, asking if I had any concerns or questions.
I said I don't dare look at my portfolio......and he said, yeah best not to. Extremely volatile market.
Yikes, this is my retirement !
I have to look today because I need to print out tax forms. ugh.
He also warned me that the offices may likely close and that personnel will work from home, and still be available for communication.
I guess we retired are all in the same boat.
I worry for those who cannot work from home due to the nature of their employment, and may lose wages......:(

I
Nooooooooooooooo. No. I would cover my eyes not to read this, but that would mean touching my face.

Please, people.

I can understand not being in a panic and thinking this will blow over - I get that attitude. But a hoax that the entire world is in on is (sorry) crazy.

find it disturbing and dangerous.

Congress reaches deal on $8.3B bill to battle coronavirus

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Capitol Hill negotiators have reached agreement on an $8.3 billion measure to battle the coronavirus outbreak that's spreading and threatening a major shock to the economy and disruptions to everyday life in the U.S.

The measure immediately went to the floor for a brief, bipartisan debate; the House will vote on the bill later Wednesday and Senate leaders are pressing for a vote in that chamber by the end of the week...

Snipped

I just got back from grocery shopping in Manhattan and there was no panic shopping, except the shelf of sanitizers was empty and shoppers kind of giggled as we waited our turns to get a wipe to clean the shopping cart handle. Other than those minor things, it seemed like a totally normal day at the store. There definitely was no fighting or impatience that I've seen on some news coverage. If anything, people were nice.

It's almost as if nobody knew this was coming.....since January.
