I would like to see this happen. Seems one way to somewhat contain the spread.
Scary to think about shutting down all domestic travel in the US. Would put airlines such as Frontier, Spirit, Southwest possibly out of business. In my group we would lose our jobs immediately once domestic travel stops. And who would be hiring during this time period? IDK

Don't forget these 2 idiots:

Zara and Mike Tindall won't self-isolate despite northern Italy trip

because...

Cransley School, a private school in Cheshire, also closed after 29 pupils and five members of staff returned from Bormio, a Lombardy ski resort.

Why just airplanes? The virus can be found in a Greyhound bus, Amtrak train, Subway, hotel jitney, local taxi, etc.

Question for those watching all this on SM in the US (no specific SM rumors or content references please per TOS):

I’m not on SM, but have been wondering “what it’s like out there” generally atm. How concerned are people overall in your opinions? Do we in here represent a unique group of being overly prepared and concerned people, or are there a lot of others who are as concerned as us, talking about supplies, etc.? Is there a lack of concern by many who are stuck on this “ it’s just the flu” mentality? Perhaps concern is evolving as more cases are diagnosed? Perhaps it varies in different regions? Are there people arguing as usual, insulting each other? It’s it mad out there? Total chaos? Is there a whole bunch of misinformation floating around as usual? Thanks for your thoughts and opinions. Again, please just give a general assessment on this without bringing over anything from SM, so as to not violate TOS.

I don’t really do SM either, but my wife does. She said that it’s kind of a mixed bag here locally. Some are concerned, but the majority right now, are more annoyed by the panic shopping than anything. (Give it a couple weeks... and I think the opinions will change)

So that’s the scoop in central Indiana ATM...

ETA - I went to Meijer last night (chain grocery store) - plenty of toilet paper and bottled water, but the pain meds section was nearly bare!! No rubbing alcohol, and I picked up the very last bottle of peroxide.

And no white rice to be found.

On my personal social media I am not seeing much. I have two friends (which are also friends) unfriend each other after 20 years because one of them thinks this is very serious and the other told her she is being gullible. Another friend who simply posts statistics every day and another who posts every day about how the government is just trying to scare us. I personally don’t post about it on my SM because it’s pointless. It’s not the place to have a rational discussion like we can here.

On another note...one of my kids started complaining of a sore throat. That evening he spiked a fever, so I took him to urgent care. None of the staff wore masks except the physician assistant. She asked if he’s traveled outside the country (no) and did a strep swab which came back negative. She then decided to do presumptive influenza since our insurance doesn’t pay for an influenza test and prescribed Tamiflu. Shocked me because any other time, I would have been told “oh it’s viral, drink lots of fluids.”

I understand what you’re saying but it appears people in the US want to criticize the government but would not be happy with more austere measures. The truth is the only way to have prevented this would have been to shut down travel in the beginning. Here in the US people won’t even abide by self quarantine!!! And side bar- I would sooner put myself down then my pets so... different strokes I guess. People in the US are really going to have to wake up and curb interaction if they want to protect themselves. All IMO

But....when schools remain open the perception of the public is "this isn't so bad, I don't need to change what I do". When schools are open, teachers and their families are at risk, parents are in and out of the school, and interactions continue.
I give it two weeks with a delayed response and time lost...
Well, the public needs to be educated why schools would remain open. I learned a lot about the complications (and health risks!) yesterday by watching a press conference where the speaker outlined the issues about school closing. I understood the issues after they were explained.

When schools are closed, where are the kids? Who is taking care of the little ones? Mom has to use sick time to watch a healthy kid at home?

And where do the big ones go? To the mall, the movies, the pizza joint....where the general public is? If kids are too contagious to be in school, wouldn't they be contagious in public areas?

And, it seems, that when kids get the virus, they really don't get that sick. They recover. But if they spread it to someone in the general public who is elderly, has health issues, is pregnant, etc., then those kids put others at risk. Seems safer to have them at school.

I'm on the fence on this one, but definitely keeping my mind open to listening to reasoning about decisions.

Not enough happening in US....I can only assume that we will take mandated options after a significant number of deaths....I'm not sure what that number will be....

The chart highlights the benefits, lives saved, with quarantine.
----------------------------

What is “social distancing,” (eg, Quarantine and Isolation strategies) and how can it slow the outbreak?
Though resources needs to be optimized in order to get best results from these strategies... a great study by our group.

Would like to see Italy and SK included in these graphs. Off to find the original source document to post here as y'all know me, I want source documents for my own interpretation! Just like case trials in Florida - I want the evidence to see myself vs. MSM interpretation iykwim.

First coronavirus case detected in South Africa
''South Africa has detected its first case of the coronavirus, a 38-year-old man who visited Italy with his wife.

This brings to 27 the number of coronavirus cases reported in Africa. Algeria is worst-affected, with 17 cases, followed by Senegal with four.

The South African couple, who have two children, were part of a group of 10 who returned from Italy on 1 March, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said.

The man and the doctor who checked him were both in self-isolation, he added.

A tracer team had been sent to the eastern province of KwaZulu-Natal to identify people who might have been in contact with the man and the doctor, Mr Mkhize said.

With only a handful of coronavirus cases detected across Africa, governments have had valuable extra time to build up their testing and treatment capabilities, BBC Africa correspondent Andrew Harding reports.

But there are particular concerns that in South Africa - home to the world's largest HIV epidemic - the immune systems of millions of people have already been weakened, leaving them, potentially, more vulnerable to this new virus, he adds.''

I see no response on Facebook. I put post on my page and no one responds. There is a total disconnect as to what is about to happen. The only people who are more concerned than us are doctors and scientists.....and probably Washington New York, and California now. Under 40 group is the worst.

From a personal note....yesterday my 80 year old mother told me to stop worrying about it. They live alone and have refused to prepare in the past month as I was nagging them. Interesting enough, they watch Foxnews not stop. So was really interested in the post from yesterday concerning that topic. Correlation is not always causation....but interesting none the less. Two weeks ago my 30 year old nephew laughed at the idea of preparing so they stonewalled me. Last night they couldn't find perell and bought an 8oz. Bottle for $30. I may have their attention now.

My 30 year old daughter laughed at me several times over the past month in my preparations. She's not laughing anymore but still doubtful.

dunno, excellent question. Is it a risk/reward type scenario? Kids in school are in close contact for over 40 minutes/class = potential close contact definition for 40 folks in one day, and then take home to parents/family and continuing the spread each day during/after the prodomal/incubation period later in school. Vs. letting a potential + kid go out and do casual walkby's but no long term contact?

That's just one guess, and only a guess for sure as to reasoning. Thinking that way makes sense as to spread. Issue as you state, is home care and parents off work.

This is why WHO kept saying again and again and again, thanks to the Wuhan folks in the beginning. They understood their sacrifice, as other countries cannot or will not do those measures.

So many similarities on my end, as I mentioned previously. A few of my peers are starting to come around though I think.

Re: “There is a total disconnect as to what is about to happen. The only people who are more concerned than us are doctors and scientists.....and probably Washington New York, and California now”, good way of putting it and I totally agree with this, as far as my own assessments locally (minus the one guy who is stocking up on guns and ammunition).

I did see one lady with a cart full of tuna cans and about 20 packages of maxi pads though. Either there was a great sale, she has fibroids and excessive bleeding, or she was the only other one in the store shopping for “coronavirus supplies”. I anticipate this to change here shortly. I asked the lady at the store if they’ve had a lot of “Coronavirus shoppers”...she said “not yet” and gave me a dreaded look.

Hey, I just thought of a new name for CVS: “Corona Virus Supplies”.

Unbelievable. That's crazy. First of all, the government and medical experts are saying a mask does not help and the LAST PLACE A HIGH CONTAGIOUS person should be is in the ER!

Ugh. I'm so pissed at this. I wish Trump would get up there and tell the truth. I blame him for this mess, blowing off in the beginning, telling people it's no worse than a flu bug and continuing to be the person that the US citizens refer to, as all I hear is "Trump doesn't think it's bad..." .... ugh, forget it. I'm going to put myself in a timeout corner.

Since you brought up Trump I feel sort of safe piggy-backing onto y0ur post JerseyGirl. Here is a link to several articles about his interview with Hannity that I think you’re referencing. I think it’s important that people understand why the handling of this is a mess and people aren’t taking it seriously. I will join you in the time-out corner and bring snacks (which tried to auto correct as snark:D):

I thinks it's a little bit of everything up here in Canada.

From toilet paper hoarding at Costco
People are hoarding supplies as COVID-19 spreads – but why? And is it useful? An expert weighs in

My Mom's medical PSWs are not concerned at all, as their attention is focused on the flu outbreak at local nursing homes.

My slightly neurotic neighbour is socially isolating himself from all things Chinese, including his brother and SIL and nephew, who live in 'the city'.

Renewed my Mom's prescriptions, as per usual, and discussed future supply and availability with the pharmacist, no anticipated issues with supply.

I have done two posts on FB about it. Only two folks commented, yet I see others on FB are saying it's media inflammatory and no big deal. Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd, y'all read what happened last night in a previous post as to friends of mine and their understanding. I've come to the conclusion and the old adage that folks that don't want to be educated are just not going to listen and dismiss you and turn you off UNTIL it affects them. That's the state of things, and then when it does affect them, they will NOT understand what we know here.

Oh well, as someone else said upthread, perhaps we are all wrong and they are all right and it's nothing and will go away.

I'm not going to speak much about it until someone asks or brings it up as it's so divisive it seems.

Whoa. Now that I understand better what goes into a decision like that, it's huge.

2 weeks!

My heart goes out to families now scrambling to figure out how to handle this if they don't have a stay-at-home parent.

Oh, this will be very interesting. Thanks for sharing the link. Im not sure I will be able to catch it but I am very interested in what they say to the health care workers.

There should be some interesting advice they will get, and me, joe the public-lol, wants to hear it. :)
