Told to Stay Home, Suspected Coronavirus Patient Attended Event With Dartmouth Students

When an employee of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire showed signs of possible coronavirus last week, a medical worker who had examined him told him to avoid contact with others, pending further tests. Instead, he went to a mixer at a crowded music venue.

Three days later, he was confirmed as the state’s first coronavirus case.

And now a second case has been confirmed — a “close contact” of the patient’s — raising new questions about what should happen when suspected coronavirus patients ignore requests to self-quarantine.

This is criminal. There are charges available, I say make an example out of these folks. Idiot.

A Sydney high school has been shut down after a year 11 student tested positive for coronavirus.

The almost 1,200 pupils at Epping boys high school were told to stay home on Friday after a 16-year-old boy was diagnosed as having the virus on Thursday night.

“I implore parents not to panic but to make sure your child stays home,” the New South Wales health minister, Brad Hazzard, said on Friday. “The young fellow ... he is not bad, but he is not well.”

The state government has yet to say how long the school closure could run for, but staff and students have been told to isolate themselves at the weekend. People who have been in close contact with the student have been told to self-isolate for 14 days.

Coronavirus outbreak may have unleashed panic buying of Hostess Twinkies and Ding Dongs

Alongside those coronavirus prep bags being filled by shoppers with bleach and hand sanitizer may be boxes of long shelf life Twinkies and Ding Dongs.

“We are seeing that,” Hostess Brands CEO Andy Callahan said when asked if he is seeing a bump in business as people stock up, should they be trapped at home due to the coronavirus outbreak.
LOL !

I went to the grocery store today and there was a guy --I'd say early 20's--with his cart half full of boxes of them!

Still silence in Ohio, though they've cancelled personal attendace at the "Arnold" games in Columbus, OH. Apparently thats some sports thing sponsored by Arnold Schwarzenegger. News still won't say where there are people who are being quarantined and tested in OH, but suspect it must be in the Columbus area.

Should events be canceled due to the coronavirus? It depends, experts say.

Now say they are testing and observing 3 people. No idea where.

Coronavirus: What you need to know today | Ohio News

Still no widespread testing in OH and no information about where they are doing testing. Assume they are still using the CDC. I think the big hospital systems are starting to pressure the ODH and governor to start doing more. It puts the hospital docs, nurses and other staff at risk if the state is just sitting around, not testing people unless they traveled from China in the last few weeks.

I heard yesterday the Ohio Hospital Assn has formed a committee to deal with the state on this .

Isn't that going to be as dangerous as quarantining people on cruise ships. Wasn't there a spread in a high rise apt building in Hong Kong?

MOO

I think the key phrase there is that they quarantining those already diagnosed with the virus?

New York Warns Televangelist Jim Bakker Over Virus Cure Claims

New York’s top law enforcement officer told televangelist Jim Bakker to stop making misleading claims about a product’s effectiveness as a treatment for coronavirus, saying there is no specific medicine available to prevent or cure the disease.

State Attorney General Letitia James sent a letter to Bakker earlier this week, noting that a guest on his February 12 show touted a dietary supplement called Silver Solution, which is sold on the show’s website. The guest said the product hadn’t been tested on the current coronavirus but had been found to eliminate similar viruses within 12 hours.

Silver Solution costs $300 for a dozen 16-ounce bottles.

Australian doctors with coronavirus attended seminar with dozens of others

Two Australian doctors infected with coronavirus attended a radiology seminar with as many as 70 fellow practitioners, according to new reports.

The Sydney-area doctors, a man who works at Ryde Hospital and a woman employed at Liverpool Hospital, tested positive for the deadly virus after the Feb. 18 gathering, News.com.au reported.

Now officials are trying to track down all the other attendees.

“We have had tracing going on,” New South Wales Health Minister Brad Hazzard told reporters, according to the outlet. “This is a bit like a police investigation in a sense, trying to track who is coming into contact with who and what possible associations there may have been.

“New South Wales Health has been working very hard to try to contact each of those doctors and other attendees of the conference, so far it has been positive, nobody else showing any symptoms of coronavirus,” he added.

Saudi Arabia confirms three new cases of patients infected with the new novel coronavirus, according to the Kingdom’s health ministry.

Saudi Arabia’s health ministry said one of the patients carrying the coronavirus arrived to the Kingdom came from Iran via Kuwait. Authorities said the person also went on to infect his wife.

The third patient was traveling in the same car as the first two confirmed cases who entered Saudi Arabia through Bahrain several days ago.

Wow, that’s interesting. My daughter had Scarlett fever several years ago- she was about 7. She’d been vaccinated too. One of the small percentage that it didn’t work for I guess.

So is the heart valve issue something that immediately cropped up or did it take a while?

Can someone explain how vaccines help against scarlet fever? Scarlet fever is an infection due to strep throat. I've never heard of any vaccine for this?

FWIW my sister is 40 and had scarlet fever as a child. I had strep a ton growing up but no scarlet fever. I got incredibly ill as an adult from strep though. It took me years to recover.
