I hope that 8.3 billion in assistance isn't a mass
giveaway to corporations and businesses who
lose money due to closures or lack of customers due to this pandemic.
That federal money needs to be used to contain
and slow the disease and then used to help the
individuals harmed by massive medical bills and being unemployed due to illness.
I agree with you. I know of people who will go to work sick because there is no way they can meet their 5000-6000 dollar deductible, they don't get sick days, and they wait on people. I have one friend in this category who manages a place where they sell medical supplies to mostly sick and elderly people!

What an incredible, unprecedented sight. For the first time in my lifetime, there are no pilgrims performing the tawaf around the ka’ba in Makkah as authorities shut it down to clean the area and contain the spread of coronavirus. Shiraz Maher on Twitter

Wow. That’s amazing. And people save money for the trip there often for years. It’s an obligation in their religion to go at least once on the pilgrimage. So you have to wonder where everyone is who was scheduled to be there. Also, shutting that down truly shows how serious this is.

And small business owners!

And the thing is, what if they don't even get sick, but their business or or kids' school, etc. shuts down. People who don't even get the virus can be in vulnerable situations.

I have a friend who organizes trade shows. She mostly works from home so is at low risk for the virus....but her business is at very high risk of taking a huge financial hit. She's fretting.

UNIVERSITY BANS LECTURES

Seattle's University of Washington – whose famous alumni includes Bruce Lee, Barry White and Amanda Knox – is switching to online classes and exams, starting Monday, March 9.

All University of Washington campuses were alerted today that “classes and finals will not be held in person”.

Coronavirus LIVE: UK cases soar as second 'coronavirus death' investigated

Wow. This is incredible to me. I think this is unprecedented as I have never heard of an entire university doing this for all their classes here in the US. I do think its a wise decision for now. Im glad they are doing it for their own safety and the safety of the students.

The fear of flying caused by the coronavirus outbreak is reminiscent of 9/11, Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly told CNBC on Thursday.

“9/11 wasn’t an economically driven issue for travel. It was more fear, quite frankly, and I think that that’s really what’s manifested this time,” Kelly said on “The Exchange.”

Southwest began to experience “very sharp declines” in bookings last week, in the range of “several hundred million dollars we think,” he said. “We’re guessing. It’s still early March.”

Southwest CEO says coronavirus-driven fear of flying has a '9/11-like feel'

Negative on the corn starch mixture. Didn’t think it would work but had to try it. We have various natural clays that would thicken in the lab but I’m not sure about putting those on my hands. Natural doesn’t always mean safe.

I guess the easiest is putting some 60% minimum IPA (Isopropanol) in a spray bottle and spritzing your hands or some other alcohol that’s at least 120 proof (save the vodka and tequila for drinking). I’m sticking with 60% minimum concentration by weight as my own internal guidelines for what I will be willing to use. Using a measuring cup is a volume concentration and I’m not sure what % alcohol you’ll end up with. Would need to know specific gravity of each material. (See below..I’m not good at leaving such things unanswered)

While I was typing I decided to pull a couple of SDS for hand sanitizer off the web. I suspect that they are 60-70% alcohol, 1% aloe (just enough to claim) and the rest are viscosity agents. First one I pulled is Purell gel and it says it’s hazardous components are Ethanol 50-70% and Isopropyl 1-5% so by that it does dip lower than 60%.

While I’m playing on the web. Specific gravity of aloe very gel is 1.027 roughly. IPA is roughly 0.7885. 1 US cup is 236.6 ml. Doing some math at 1/3 cup and 2/3 cup gets you:
.33 cup x 236.6 ml/cup x 1.027 grams/ml = 158.26 grams of Aloe

0.66 cup x 236.6 ml/cup x 0.7885 grams/ml = 123.1 grams of IPA

That ends up 43.75% IPA if you were starting with 100% material. 124.1/(158.26+123.1)x100=

pretty sure I did that right but I haven’t had enough caffeine yet so I’ll check it after the brain is functioning fully.

ETA: I pulled 1 SDS for aloe gel to run the numbers with, not all aloe gels have same specific gravity based on the next SDS I pulled. I would use a kitchen scale if I was making it at home.

ETAA: pulled SDS for another hand sanitizer it says they use 50-100% of 70% v/v which means volume per volume and glycerine plus other ingredients. I have glycerine and it does thicken things but all the math variants are driving me a bit batty.
Screw it, wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds.

President Trump says he "may go" to the CDC

President Trump said today that he actually may still go to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention after the trip was canceled.

Trump said the visit was canceled because of a potential case of coronavirus.

“We may go — they thought there was a problem with CDC with somebody who had the virus,” he said, adding that the person in question has been tested and it came back negative.

“I may be going,” he added.

I thought his reason for cancelling was that he didn't want to visit them when they have so much important work to do and he doesn't want to take staff away from that essential work?

I hope so too. Though I fail to see the reason why preparedness and response to dealing with this virus...and helping people cope ...would need to be undercover. JMO

Stay well.
I think some would over react and panic. IMO there's a big difference between being prepared and panicking.

And keep us posted! jmo
I have just sent a friend request to his wife because he may not be able to post. I met her last fall, so hopefully she will accept.

Thats exactly what I predicted!
I think it's fear of being on the plane and possibly exposed to the virus, but also fear of being quarantined somewhere far from home. Not sure how to address that because that actually seems like a possibility for travelers. Even if within your own country, nobody wants to be stuck somewhere for 14 days.

And folks, I just got back and found out that my post that directed people to the tornado thread was taken very badly. I can’t say I understand it, as I didn’t see the post I replied to attached to a longer conversation. I must have missed a few things. But I see posts like mine frequently on WS and they are usually meant well, so...
