This is totally confusing. San Diego is making emergency preparations. LA County says there is no threat to the public. The CDC says to wash your hands. Why don’t w have real info?

PAHO prepares 8 Caribbean countries for laboratory diagnosis of new coronavirus

Washington D.C., 12 February 2020 (PAHO) – Virology experts from the Pan American Health Organization have travelled to the Caribbean region to ensure that laboratory specialists are trained and equipped to identify and respond to potential imported cases of the new coronavirus (COVID-19).

“Providing countries with the reagents and knowledge needed to perform early diagnosis is key for outbreak response and protecting our populations.”

Training in the Caribbean began in Suriname, followed by Barbados and Haiti, and will continue later this week in Jamaica, Belize and Dominica. Next week, PAHO experts will travel to Bahamas and Guyana to complete this initiative in the sub-region. In addition to this, on 10 February the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) in Trinidad and Tobago informed that its laboratory is ready to respond to the new coronavirus.

“As one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, the Caribbean must prepare to detect and respond quickly to imported cases of COVID-19” said Yitades Gebre, PAHO/WHO Representative for Barbados and Eastern Caribbean Countries. “Providing countries with the reagents and knowledge needed to perform early diagnosis is key for outbreak response and protecting our populations.”

During the training, laboratories, which include both National Influenza Centers and Flu national labs, are provided with the diagnostic materials required to test for COVID-19. This includes primers, probes and positive controls. Participants are then trained in the main tests and protocols available and carry out a practical exercise of molecular detection.

Coronavirus preparation in Latin America and the Caribbean
The laboratory training currently underway in the Caribbean forms part of an overall initiative to ensure that 29 laboratories are ready to detect COVID-19 in the Region by 21 February 2020, with the US CDC in Atlanta serving as the regional reference laboratory.

The laboratories selected for training are those that already provide testing for influenza. This means that instead of developing a laboratory from scratch, the protocol recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and PAHO for testing for COVID-19 can simply be added to countries’ existing protocols for influenza testing.

“We know that a country’s health system is most likely to be the first point of entry for a suspected case of new coronavirus,” said Sylvain Aldighieri, Deputy Director of the Health Emergencies Department at PAHO. “The training being carried out by PAHO in influenza laboratories in the Region is the most effective way to equip countries with the ability to detect, monitor and respond to cases in a timely manner.”

Laboratory training in the Region
As well as laboratories in the Caribbean, PAHO has also led training in Brazil, in collaboration with Fiocruz and the Ministry of Health, for 9 countries in South America (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay), as well as in Venezuela.

This week, training will also be hosted by the Ministry of Health of Mexico for 6 countries in Central America (Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua), as well as in the Dominican Republic and Cuba.

I was surprised Atlanta wasn't included in this since the CDC is there. But I think I read it was just the start and there would be more.

Thanks so much for your eloquent and level headed posts that you continually share with us. I was wondering where these cities were, so I'm doing a cut/paste of the CDC transcript. (It's like with trials and cases here, I prefer to see/read LE stuff - especially in Florida - vs. reading MSM interpretation which is often misleading or wrong)

Sorry for the all caps, but I'm not taking the time to correct from the all caps they did in the transcription they did  I wanted to see if they correlated with that very very early on publication that I posted in first thread talking about statistically where would cases be found in US due to airline travel from the epicenter. I think it does, although I can't seem to quickly find that map/source that I did earlier. Take note - this is what the media picked up on to say that CDC says it's already possibly spreading here

"FIRST, YESTERDAY, SECRETARY AZAR MENTIONED THAT THE CDC HAS BEGUN WORKING WITH FIVE PUBLIC HEALTH LABS TO CONDUCT COMMUNITY BASED INFLUENZA BASED SURVEILLANCE SO WE CAN TEST THOSE WITH FLU LIKE SYMPTOMS FOR NOVEL CORONAVIRUS. THOSE PUBLIC HEALTH LABS ARE IN LOS ANGELES, SAN FRANCISCO, SEATTLE, CHICAGO AND NEW YORK CITY AND I WANT TO THANK THEM FOR THEIR PARTICIPATION, COLLABORATION AND SUPPORT. THIS IS JUST THE STARTING POINT AND WE PLAN TO EXPAND TO MORE SITES IN THE COMING WEEKS UNTIL WE HAVE NATIONAL SURVEILLANCE. THIS IS LEVERAGING OUR EXISTING INFLUENZA AND VIRAL RESPIRATORY SURVEILLANCE SYSTEMS. THIS IS AN EXTRA LAYER OF OUR RESPONSE THAT WILL HELP US DETECT IF AND WHEN THIS VIRUS IS SPEADING IN THE COMMUNITY. ALL OF OUR EFFORTS NOW ARE TO PREVENT THE SUSTAINED SPREAD OF THE VIRUS IS IN OUR COMMUNITY BUT WE NEED TO BE PREPARED FOR THE POSSIBILITY THAT IT WILL SPREAD. RESULTS FROM THIS SURVEILLANCE WOULD BE AN EARLY WARNING SIGNAL TO TRIGGER A CHANGE IN OUR RESPONSE STRATEGY.

I can't seem to find any live feed for Today's daily WHO press briefing in searching google and YouTube. If someone else finds a live link, please post as they usually start at 10 am eastern, in 15 minutes.

TIA

My family was just talking about that. Maybe they think they already have control of labs in Atlanta....just thinking out loud. Yea, I posted from a source that they intend to have national surveillance.

Edit: and I can't understand why this isn't news in the US. No one wants to hear about it even in general conversation.

Passengers finally begin leaving cruise ship in Cambodia
Hundreds of cruise ship passengers long stranded at sea by virus fears cheered as they finally disembarked Friday and were welcomed to Cambodia by the nation’s authoritarian leader.....

....The passengers cheered as they walked toward waiting buses and waved goodbye to other passengers watching from the ship’s deck....

Local officials told reporters 414 passengers will leave the port Friday and fly to Cambodia’s capital before traveling to their final destinations....

.....Hun Sen said earlier he had let the Westerdam dock in Cambodia for humanitarian reasons.

A strong supporter of China, he has played down any threat from the new virus and even threatened to kick out reporters or officials seen wearing protective face masks.

“Like I said, the real disease is fear, not the virus. We want to eliminate the fear of disease,” he said in an interview with Fresh News...”

Insanely irresponsible IMO. Now we have hundreds of passengers that have disembarked.

Regarding new positive COVID19 test from a passenger;

Cruise stranded by virus fears ends with roses in Cambodia

“...John Stanley, of Evesham in England, who with his wife Olive had been on the ship since it departed from Singapore in January on the first leg of its journey, recounted some of the stresses of the last two weeks.

After some uncertainty, they came to accept the ship's doctor's declaration that none of the passengers had the feared COVID-19 viral illness....

....Taking advantage of the opportunity to boost his country's tourism profile, Hun Sen said the passengers were free to go to the beach, go sightseeing in Sihanoukville, where the ship docked, or even visit the famous centuries-old Angkor Wat temple complex in the northwest.”
