South Korea has stepped up measures to contain the spread of the deadly new coronavirus, as confirmed infections increased sharply for a second day.

PM Chung Sye-kyun said it was now an emergency as 100 new cases and the country's second death were confirmed.

The southern cities of Daegu and Cheongdo have been declared "special care zones". The streets of Daegu are now largely abandoned.

All military bases are in lockdown after three soldiers tested positive.

Here we go again...

Hubei is going to start counting clinically diagnosed cases (i.e. not confirmed by lab test) as official cases again. This is the third time this has changed in 8 days.

Coronavirus statistics have been a complete mess today: Chinese public health officials said they had been ordered to change how they count cases for the third time in eight days – and the second time in 24 hours. @gerryshih on the chaos:

So this guy tested positive before boarding the plane and then got a high fever while flying back to US. And he wasn't put in quarantine area until he got a fever. This evacuation was not well executed by any means, and probably got more people infected.
"My wife touched me and she knew I was burning up. I went up to the military doctors, they took my temperature and immediately put me in a quarantine area."

A 29-year-old Chinese doctor who postponed his wedding to treat coronavirus patients died of the bug this week — one of the youngest people to die from the disease.

Dr. Peng Yinhua — who worked in the outbreak’s epicenter — died Thursday after contracting the deadly infection as he treated patients at the People’s No. 1 Hospital in Wuhan’s Jiangxia district.

I don't think those already tested positive were in the box. Here is the woman who were on the same plane:
"In a comment posted on Facebook, Maniscalco wrote, “One person who had been confirmed before boarding the plane was sitting next to the bathrooms where everybody had to pass to use the bathroom. They claim that he was in a separate isolated area, that is not true he was sitting right next to the bathrooms.”"
Utah evacuees from Diamond Princess cruise ship express frustration about potential spread of infection, lack of transparency

The delay of the European plane, in light now of the information about virus being aerosolized by stool in toilets that everyone uses and can aerosolize to infect? hmmmmm....

Check out the large "Containment Box" inside the large plane in link below. Im not sure who was put in there but I think the idea was that any confirmed cases would be put in that box for the flight home which hopefully separated known infectees from people that didnt have it yet.

14 Americans who got the coronavirus from the quarantined cruise ship in Japan were flown home in an 'isolation box' at the back of the plane

The Americans who tested positive were in the containment chamber on the Kalita flights, not just behind a plastic sheet.

I believe the plastic sheet was just for the esthetics, or possibly for a secondary screen so those in the seats on the evacuation plane didn't have to stare at the containment unit for the entire flight, and they would not be able to see what was going on in there. From the photos I saw, the plastic sheet was certainly not meant as the primary means to stop spread of the virus

Good article about the Kalitta flights evacuating the American from the Diamond Princess

Great photo of a bio-containment unit being loaded on a plane:

747s Carrying Americans Exposed To Coronavirus Used New Quarantine Box For Infected Flyers

I'm trying to figure out how they get that box into that hole

Here is a photo taken on that flight showing the containment unit onboard with the apparently COVID-19 negative passengers in seats.

I did see a photo with a plastic sheet up and it looked like it was just hung for visual separation, and likely to specify that the regular pax were not to cross this sheet, to specify the "perimeter" maintained around the containment unit.

Many of the photos taken by passengers are no longer available so I'm not able to easily find the photo of the plastic sheet. It looked like an ordinary white plastic sheet (without any lettering or symbols) hung from a cord stretched across the inside of plane, about 8 feet above the deck level, with no attempt to "seal off" any area of the plane

Just a reminder, not that anyone here was “wrong” but that we were all MISLED in believing that our government had completely contained those with the virus. That they kept the other US citizens safe as they brought them home.

I have lost all confidence in our governments response. They behaved just like China and Japan.

I get it, they aren’t prepared but they don’t want panic. But they lied.

I swear if I were a conspiracy nut, I’d think they are timing this for the elections and/or for population control. Take your pick there are plenty of other theories flying about

I can see why the CDC was furious- on different levels.
@IceIce9 - hey you were right.

Coronavirus live updates: South Korea infections almost doubled in 24 hours - CNN

The government of Hubei province on Friday banned the practice of reducing the number of already confirmed cases.

It also mandated that all previously counted cases stand as part of the total confirmed tally.

Tu Yuanchao, deputy director of Hubei Health Committee, said at a press conference that all the cases that were confirmed but then retroactively dismissed because they no longer fitted reporting requirements would be added back to the total tally.

On Thursday -- based on China's National Health Commission’s narrowed criteria for confirmed tally to only include laboratory-confirmed cases -- Hubei authorities said they'd no longer count so-called “clinically diagnosed patients,” who are people exhibiting symptoms without testing positive for the virus. This caused Hubei’s total confirmed cases to drop by 279 on Thursday alone.

Why did our government not listen to the CDC??

The CDC is the expert, not government officials. CDC recommendations should have been followed.

China changed how it counts coronavirus cases again. Here's why

Weeks after the novel coronavirus crisis began in December, there is still widespread confusion over the exact number of cases reported in China and whether the epidemic is finally stabilizing at the outbreak's epicenter of Hubei province.

On Thursday, China announced just 394 new confirmed cases, the lowest number of daily infections reported in weeks. But on Friday, the confirmed number of cases in mainland China increased to 889.

This fluctuation could be partly down to a change this week in what is counted as a "confirmed case" in Hubei province, the epicenter of the global outbreak.

How has China changed its method? On Thursday the government guidelines changed and "Clinically confirmed" were excluded from the tally of confirmed cases.

Now patients must have a positive lab test result to be counted in the tally. Other cases will be listed as "suspected."

Why has China done this? China cited improved testing capacity of the novel coronavirus as the reason for changing the way confirmed cases are counted in Hubei province.

Experts have different takes on the change: The World Health Organization has previously voiced support for the way China is counting coronavirus infections, and said Thursday it was encouraged by the drop in reported cases.

Some experts, however, have expressed skepticism over taking China's figures at face value, given the government's track record of suppressing information about this epidemic and previous ones.

But David Fisman, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Toronto, said the way that officials define cases of a virus often evolves as their understanding of the illness develops.

But Eric Feigl-Ding, an epidemiologist and visiting scientist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, said to change track twice in one week was "very unusual."

"It's very confusing to see true trends and makes elucidating them complicated," Feigl-Ding continued. "Did (the cases) really decrease or is it because you've been not reporting this the last few days?"

Have there been any credible articles/commentary on whether or not people can be reinfected?

Also this seems to be kind of a long haul virus... respiratory distress hit around day 5-10 of symptoms.... and then longer to recover.

I’m afraid for our healthcare systems.

One of Dr Seheult's videos had his thoughts on the Taiwan News article that reported what was alleged to be from a Chinese doctor's message that said there could be reinfection and that the 2nd infection was worse for patients.

Dr Seheult said, paraphrasing from my recollection, that that report isn't anywhere near a peer-reviewed study. He suggested that it could have been talking about patients recovering from Covid-19 infection that then got secondary infections, and that often it is harder for the body to fight the secondary infection (the secondary infection not being Covid-19).

The meds referred to in that Taiwan News article that said they're helping the patient recover from the Covid-19 infection but damaging the heart, I would guess that would be steroids to help strengthen the lungs and reduce lung inflammation? (but I am not a doctor!).

I also heard on one of the videos I watched that human immunity to coronaviruses that cause colds doesn't tend to last very long, and that you could potentially get a cold in the spring caused by the same coronavirus that caused a cold back in the previous autumn. But I've heard it said that if you have a cold for three weeks, you don't have a cold....there's something else going on.. so that would imply that there would be some immunity left from a coronavirus cold at least for a few weeks to months?

I guess Nebraska has 13, not 14. So where did they send the remaining one that tested positive? And why is she/he separated from the rest?

It could be due to how many isolation rooms they have. I couldn't find info on the Nebraska unit, but found this article very easy good read about Emory's unit. It has room for 11 patients.

Emory's 11-bed unit includes three ICU rooms, two of which are connected to the large anteroom in the middle, a staff dressing room with lockers and shower, and a biosafety cabinet for specimen processing. A lab dedicated to the unit was established just outside the unit.

University of Nebraska has a facebook page and have update with the info that 3 are in the Biocontainment unit and 10 are in the National Quarantine unit

500 Chinese prisoners infected with Covid-19

The director of Wuhan Women’s Prison has been removed from her position, according to the Hubei Daily, where it’s believed 230 inmates have tested positive for Covid-19.

Another 41 prisoners in Shayang Hanjin prison, also tested positive.

The Global Times has reported on new cases in prisons in two other provinces (202 in Shandong, 28 in Zejiang).

... adds up to 500 new cases in prisons across three provinces.
