Untraceable coronavirus cells emerge in three countries amid pandemic

Doctors are unable to identify the source of coronavirus clusters in South Korea, Singapore and Iran, the World Health Organization said Saturday.

Doctors began floating fears of a pandemic — which occurs when a disease spreads to two continents — on Friday as two more died in Iran, the number of cases in South Korea doubled, and Italy saw its first death.

I have to say that I’m truly surprised that a pandemic has not been officially declared yet. IMO, this situation has surpassed the point in which other pandemics have been declared in the past. Why the delay?

Interesting read......substantiated level of risk in various age groups. Consistency in figure 3 charts of sustained local transmission was astounding.

"The median delay between seeking care at a hospital or clinic and reporting was 2 days (IQR 2-5 days) in Mainland China and decreased from 9 days before Jan 18, 2020 to 2 days thereafter."

Concerning as IIRC they said at the end of the media meeting yesterday there would be one at 10 am today.

Still, no link, no feed I have found.

But I did find those comments made in another presser earlier TODAY (their time mid-day) for Africa posted above. Has the "window closed" and they are weighing to call a pandemic and delaying today's 10 am meeting. It's 30 minutes late, and I've seen no link for any live feed yet.

Untraceable coronavirus clusters emerge, worrying health officials — Fox News

BBM
“In South Korea, Singapore and Iran, clusters of infections are leading to a jump in cases of the new viral illness outside China. But it's not the numbers that are worrying experts: It's that increasingly they can't trace where the clusters started.”

ETA BBM -
from same article

"What we see is a very different phase of this outbreak depending where you look," said WHO's Dr. Sylvie Briand. "We see different patterns of transmission in different places."

A 78-year-old man died of COVID-19 in the northern city of Padua. The number of confirmed cases in Italy stands at 20.

Health authorities confirmed two of the new cases were in the northern region of Veneto, where Padua is located, and 15 in neighboring Lombardy, including five doctors.

The first infected patient in Lombardy, a 38-year-old man who works at Unilever in the town of Lodi, fell ill after meeting a friend who had visited China. The friend has since tested negative for the disease, but doctors were investigating whether he carried the virus and subsequently recovered without showing any symptoms.

Regional governor Luca Zaia said it was unclear how the two individuals in Veneto might have caught the disease. “There was certainly no contact with the people infected in Lodi,” he said.

One of the new cases in Japan is a former passenger of the Diamond Princess cruise ship. She tested negative and was allowed to leave, but has now tested positive.

ETA: MS is out and about in Tokoyo posting pics of where he is eating. I"m tempted to post on his twitter... "good to post so if you come up positive, they'll know where to do contact tracing" pfffffff

5 to 10 days for virus lifespan on surface areas.

Henry, do you mind if I ask you a few questions?
Do you expect them within a week?
Will your level of reassurance go up upon receipt?
Did you order them as a precautionary measure?
Do you live in area with test positive cases?
When and where will you begin to use them?
Hi- I ordered for precautionary measures. Have family in healthcare.....just in case. I don't live in an area with positive cases but do live in area of quarantined folks. I'm not sure when and where. The problem, as China is seeing now, once there is a panic then you can't get them. I don't really expect these to arrive. Ill let you know if they do. :)

Also, After doing some reading......something is better than nothing. I saw an article today where Chinese are sewing their own since there is a shortage.

Yup...once aware, they flocked to healthcare and it overwhelmed the system.

I certainly hope our medical workers and facilities have all the masks and sanitizer they need before people start hoarding.

I could see this start to get ugly. Like in Mad Max when they all run out of gas...

In the following video, Dr. O mentions the factor of (potential) air transmissibility / poor air circulation on a cruise ship:

I guarantee you that acute care hospitals are addressing the issue and being very very serious about their supplies.

The problem is really with surgical masks, because almost exclusively they are made in China.

Other kinds of Personal Protective Equipement ( PPE) are made in other countries ( India, Malaysia, Indonesia) and the supplies of gloves, plastic masks, coverups, head covers, surgical drapes, etc are not at risk at this time.

.

At this point, I would agree. But I do hope they are being requested to somewhat limit their social contact for an additional week or two.
It would only take one major sporting event (or similar setting) to make contact tracing virtually impossible. Moo

One major sporting event..... like the Olympics?
