I think this is likely an accurate description about the virus.

It reminds me a bit of MRSA, which you likely know is a huge medical problem. Hospitals have done everything they can think of to rid MRSA from the environment, including culturing nasal swabs from patients. When they do epidemiologic studies swabbing general populations, they find there is a population of MRSA-positive totally asymptomatic people that just harbor it. Attempts to treat them with antibiotics to rid them of the MRSA in their nasal passenges doesn't work, and it's not really possible to eradicate it.

I think COVID-19 might be like that. It's a novel coronavirus type that has spread very easily, probably just like other virus types we never knew about, and that some people will harbor it and be asymptomatic, while others, with risk factors that appear to be the customary infection risk factors ( infant or older age, immune-compromised, on immune-suppressive drugs, etc) are at high risk for serious aggressive pulmonary infection.

The deaths of young healthcare workers makes me also think there is an accelerated risk when otherwise low-risk people are exposed to a high viral load.

Just some thoughts.

"My fever returned tonight. I am bummed. It is low-grade 99.7, but it lingers. My medical team is giving me Ibuprofen along with more Gatorade. My doctor does not want me to take Tylenol. Tylenol’s active ingredient is Acetaminophen, not Ibuprofen. Aspirin, Advil and a potpourri of other over-the-counter medications all use Ibuprofen.

I’m told taking Tylenol may be counterproductive to the virus"

Hmm wonder why that is? Know that Advil and the like are better at lowering inflammation?? But that Tylenol may be actively counterproductive to the virus?? Advil has always worked better for me but I have to watch my high BP when I take it...

Thanks for posting this, Mags. I'm glad their son got an update and I think a lot of people who've been following their videos, and articles about them, will be interested in how they are and hoping they won't get too ill, and that they'll recover well.

Paper towels would seem a lot more hygienic for this highly-communicable disease than using towels imho. At least the paper towels can just be bagged up and sent for incineration.

Yeah, I followed the Abels YT videos while on the ship and they are such a nice couple, it is sad to hear them getting sick and especially the husband sounds like he got a bad case of it. I heard him coughing on one of his videos and thought to myself it sounds like the beginning of catching it. It is sad to hear it became reality.

They wanted off that ship so bad and it never happened until it was too late. So sad. I hope they both recover eventually.

Pneumonia and breathing issues sounds like the worst part of this virus and is the part that can kill you. In my basic understanding of why that is, it sounds like your lungs get so much buildup of phlem and mucous that your blood stream cant pick up Oxygen particles from the lungs even though you fill your lungs with air.

Great Post. I totally agree.

The good news is death rate will hopefully stay reasonably low but the bad news is it sounds like it is very contagious and people can spread it without showing any symptoms themselves and without realizing they are even sick. Its really what we are seeing happening right now.

Just days after releasing nearly 1,000 passengers from the cruise ship quarantined for two weeks in the port of Yokohama that has been a coronavirus hot spot, Japan’s health minister admitted that 23 passengers had been mistakenly cleared to leave without taking a valid recent test.

In a news briefing on Saturday night, the health minister, Katsunobu Kato, apologized for the mishap, in which the passengers left the ship, the Diamond Princess, on Wednesday and Thursday although they had not been tested for the coronavirus since before the ship went into lockdown on Feb. 5.

In certifying that the passengers posed “no risk of infection,” the Japanese Health Ministry said it had tested them and checked for symptoms as they disembarked.

Mr. Kato said that all 23 mistakenly cleared passengers had left the ship and boarded some form of public transportation. He said none of them had reported any symptoms so far and 20 had already agreed to be retested, with three negative tests so far.

I’d be curious to know as well. I wonder if it has to do with the liver. Acetaminophen is particularly hard on the liver.

Acetaminophen is risky for the liver, unlike ibuprofen. It may be that the patient has some risks for liver damage and the benefit of acetaminophen is not worth the risk of liver failure in this patient. Liver failure is a horrible side effect

Seven cruise ships to house Wuhan medical workers

The first of these ships, the Blue Whale, arrived in Wuhan, the epicentre of the outbreak, on Friday from Yichang, a nearby city down the Yangtze River.

Not a good plan IMO. Didnt they learn anything from the Princess Cruise ship fiasco. Cruise ships are not a good place to keep people safe from the Virus.

Yes, that's essentially the problem. The medical term is AARDS ( Adult Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome). It is a very severe problem.

One means of treatment that reportedly has been tried in China is ECMO: ( ExtraCorporeal Membrane Oxygenation). Something like cardiac bypass where your blood supply is shunted outside your lungs into a membrane system where your blood can be oxygenated and returned back to your bloodstream. Lots of risk, expensive, complex method. See the JAMA (Journal of American Medical Association) article below.
JAMA cites 15-30% with radiologic findings of viral pneumonia will go on to develop AARDS.

Like others, I am a bit mystified by this choice.

I'd think that a land-based dormitory situation would be easier on everyone. It's almost like they want the healthcare provider population to be imprisoned and totally controlled in a way that is more severe than the general population's quarantine.

I don't think anyone does, other than perhaps children are more easily and quickly sequestered in these quarantines.

Coronavirus British couple are 'in a bad way', says son of couple who caught deadly virus on Diamond Princess - as their son asks Donald Trump to help them escape from Japanese 'prison' hospital

David and Sally Abel, from Northamptonshire, have now been moved to a 'prison'-like hospital in Japan with the lung infection which is a known deadly complication of the deadly virus.

The couple told their son Stephen Abel that they are in a hospital room with no shower or bathing facilities which is only provided with basic paper towels.
