I think I'd rather be one step closer to home and moved into a more certain quarantine, so that there's however many hours on the flight and then at least a relative certainty compared to being on the ship. As I say, a step closer to home...If I test negative then I go into something like a basic but clean hotel room for 14 days, test clear again and I can go home.

vs staying on the ship, not feeling safe from the chance of getting infected there, not knowing how long I'd still have to stay on the ship, not knowing where I'd be going next, not knowing if I'd still test positive at some point in the next 14 days, before being able to start the journey home.

On the other hand, for me personally I wouldn't want to get on the plane for fear of it crashing, and I wouldn't have wanted to be on the cruise ship for fear of it sinking. We all have those things that send our fears into overdrive!

Well, from prior accounts, the flights on the Kalitta planes are noisy and cold because it does not have the amenities of a commercial flight. And no free movies, or music channels, or menus with choices, or nice wines or drinks for relaxation.

I also note: N0 Tray Tables! No little map to follow your air progress. No windows. I don't even know if the seat backs recline ! I think the evacuation and the flight must be quite a story, by itself.

And yes, I would want to be back in my own home country away from the ship. As the Japanese doctor said, it's not at all configured for quarantine. And I'd be very worried about OTHER stuff being contagious - like Norovirus.

I think the world has just learned an ugly lesson about quarantining.

So I will be different here and say if it was the choice of remaining in Japan or going on that plane I would stay in Japan. Japan is a great country and i would have no concerns that they couldn’t take care of me.

Looking at that plane ride I would have anxiety for the entire flight and I don’t even suffer with anxiety normally but I literally couldn’t be in the Plane like that filled with sick people and a 10+ flight.
I would have anxiety either way and likely just take an extra Xanax and get on with the flight!

Has anyone had any success with canceling a cruise and getting a credit or refund during this? Specifically Royal Caribbean.

We had booked a cruise early December to go to the Caribbean (incl. Bahamas), leaving on 2/22. I have emailed numerous times, called numerous times (on hold 2 hours), and now this morning I have was told to call the original travel booking company (again).
We purchased travel insurance. My husband read we need a note from a Dr. My health has not been good (cancer, now diabetes), and I don’t feel comfortable leaving the country right now.

Haha - I have never taken it so I have no idea if that would help me.

Not at all knowledgeable about this.

However, I think travel insurance policies have an awful lot of fine print that you need to read to see if you can qualify. At the very least, they will need a note from your physician.

You also need to read the policies of the travel booking agency. I am sure they have a time limit or other conditions for cancellations and refunds. I would find it difficult to believe you can cancel 3 days before the cruise and expect any refund.

You might want to look at a cruise forum. Maybe look on TripAdvisor's cruise forum. They have a lot of good information and it is specific to cruise lines

Let’s not try and dress this up as the U.K. and the U.S.A have a huge obesity crisis and Japan is one one of the healthiest nations on the planet so a diet in Japan would actually be a hell of a lot better for a diabetic than the lard we serve up here.

I saw his 2 older children speak about this today on Good Morning Britain, in addition to
being a type 2 diabetic Mr. Abel is lactose intolerant and gluten sensitive.

Things are often more complicated than what we first assume. Mr. Abel’s issues with the food went beyond a simple desire for something different.

Try the CruiseCritic forum (I will link it here). Lots of information and also check out the roll call for your ship and date where you can chat with passengers going on the same cruise. Find Your Cruise Roll Call - Cruise Critic

Also check out the Royal Caribbean forum on that site. Royal Caribbean International

I don’t know what meds are produced in China, but I would suggest making sure you have guaifenesin (mucinex) on hand when you stock up as it is key to recovering from respiratory illnesses. I’m going to stock up on the basics - mucinex, Benedryl, Tylenol, and ibuprofen today.

Which they will have told the doctors on board and will have dealed with it. The Japanese don’t eat much diary anyway.

The fact they are also blaming the government for this as well is ridiculous. Did the Government tell them to go on a cruise and get stuck half way around the world?

I am off on holiday in 2 months time and I will demand the government have a plane on standby to evacuate me Incase of a emergency.

IMO

British passengers on the coronavirus-hit cruise ship moored near Tokyo have criticised the "slow" response from the UK government, stating that they feel like they have been "left behind".

Yesterday, some 500 passengers who tested negative were allowed to disembark, but the British Foreign Office (FCO) has urged UK nationals to stay on board until they can organise a flight home.

A FCO spokesperson told the Telegraph that staying on the ship "is the best way to guarantee getting on a flight."

What an absolute shambles.

I’m so sorry about your health and the fact you are having to cancel your holiday. I hope you manage to get a refund or claim on your insurance and I totally understand your concern about travelling.

Haven't used over the counter meds, for a few decades
so thanks for the heads up.
Last night, told the hubs to grab his tylenol x2,
Ok .... googled, ya, musinex is an expectorant.
Good to have on hand.

It is odd to me that I'm not seeing much chatter on my social media feeds about anyone feeling the need to "prep" for a potential outbreak in the US.
I'm making my list.
#1 A MONTH TO 6 WEEKS OF DOG FOOD!
*on a side note, being claustrophobic, these pictures of all the health care workers are suffocating! - as is the coronavirus.

I’m not even talking about prepping for an outbreak, but just for a low supply of things China produces. Last year my dad had ongoing pneumonia. I’m certain his doctor probably told him at some point to get mucinex in addition to the prescribed meds. But two months into it, I finally questioned him about what he had been taking. No mucinex. Claimed he had never heard of it. I drove to the nearest store and bought him two boxes. He finally got the crap out of his lungs and recovered.

For many of us, spring will bring intense allergies that can then turn into bronchitis and even walking pneumonia. Mucinex is key whether the coronavirus reaches us or not. I don’t know where it’s produced so I’m stocking up (also the benedryl and Zyrtec just in case)!

What's happening on the Diamond Princess cruise ship?

Here's a look at the situation on board the Diamond Princess cruise ship.

The case numbers here are from World Health Organization data that may differ from those reported by national health authorities, who report updated totals at different times to the WHO.
