Weather and protests hamper Ukraine quarantine efforts

Ukraine's effort to evacuate more than 70 people from China over the coronavirus outbreak faced setbacks Thursday as weather conditions delayed the return of the evacuees and protests broke out near a hospital where they were to be quarantined.

Several hundred residents in Ukraine's Poltava region protested to stop officials from quarantining the evacuees in their village because they feared becoming infected. Demonstrators put up road blocks and burned tires, while Ukrainian media reported that there were clashes with police. More than 10 people were detained.

Indonesia to evacuate 74 people from Diamond Princess cruise ship

One of Indonesia's senior ministers said Thursday that the country is "committed" to evacuating the 74 Indonesian nationals on the Diamond Princess cruise ship.

The ship remains docked off the coast of Japan, although hundreds of passengers were allowed to evacuate Wednesday. Muhadjir Effendy, Indonesia's chief development minister, said the government isn't yet sure whether it will evacuate its citizens by boat or by plane.

Four Indonesians who were part of the ship's crew had been diagnosed with the coronavirus.

‘It’s an Absolute Joke’: Redwood City Man Blasts CDC After Contracting Coronavirus

"They were all in the same airplane as you say and some of the people were taking off their masks and talking to each other," sister-in-law Kathleen Wright said.

With a handful of new people at Travis AFB, including Wright now testing positive for coronavirus, the worry is warranted. Wright is angry about how it is all being handled. He was told there is no room for him at any nearby hospital.

"It's an absolute joke," he said of the process.

Meanwhile, three buses filled with people whose quarantine has been lifted were set to leave Travis on Thursday morning.

Couple of things:
1) I am gobsmacked that people on that flight, of ALL FLIGHTS, were removing masks.

2) How can there be no room for him at hospitals when it’s been repeatedly reported that the areas around Travis Airforce Base are so “well prepared to receive CV patients”??

3) my local news just confirmed that 3 bus loads have been “released” this morning. That 14 day quarantine ain’t giving me a huge amount of confidence right now....

"Wartime" measures have been implemented in some parts of the Chinese province of Hubei. Some residents have been barred from leaving their apartments, and officials in protective suits were going door-to-door in Wuhan this week looking for infected people.

"This must be taken seriously," Wang Zhonglin, Wuhan's newly selected Communist Party secretary, said.

MOO and those are the folks that are NOT being counted perhaps as they are not sick enough to be confirmed. These on top of those at home isolation.

US health officials issue coronavirus-related travel advisory for Japan

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a new travel advisory today for Japan — the second coronavirus-related travel advisory the agency has issued outside of mainland China.

The CDC advises travelers to “practice usual precautions,” in accordance with a “Watch - Level 1” notice out of three possible levels.

Yesterday, the agency listed the first travel notice outside of mainland China — for Hong Kong, which also carries the “Level 1” advisory.

These precautions include avoiding contact with sick people and cleaning hands. The agency also advises people to seek medical advice if they have spent time in Japan during the last two weeks and feel ill with fever or respiratory symptoms.

"At this time, CDC does not recommend canceling or postponing travel to Japan,” the agency posted on its website.

The agency currently lists mainland China as “Warning - Level 3” and advises travelers to “avoid nonessential travel.” The notice excludes Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

Thousands of Americans voluntarily self-quarantine after returning from China

Many states monitoring travelers from China who have agreed to lie low for a few weeks out of an abundance of caution:

California - there are more than 5,400 such people in the state.

Washington - 745 people have been asked to self-quarantine.

Georgia - health officials identified about 200 travelers.

Michigan - more than 300 people were referred for monitoring.

Virginia - 138 residents are being monitored. "They were asked to remain at home and practice social distancing." Social distancing means avoiding public transportation (including taxis and ride-sharing) and large public gatherings and staying about 6 feet away from others.

Iowa - a total of 27 people are under voluntary self-quarantine

North Dakota - has 10 under voluntary self-quarantine.

Alabama - monitoring travelers, declined to provide exact numbers, which change daily as passengers continue to arrive home or finish their 14-day self-quarantine periods.

Indiana - monitoring travelers, declined to provide exact numbers, which change daily as passengers continue to arrive home or finish their 14-day self-quarantine periods.

Massachusetts - monitoring travelers, declined to provide exact numbers, which change daily as passengers continue to arrive home or finish their 14-day self-quarantine periods.

Texas - monitoring travelers, declined to provide exact numbers, which change daily as passengers continue to arrive home or finish their 14-day self-quarantine periods.

Infectious disease experts say that while quarantines can help slow the spread of a virus, they can't necessarily stop it from spreading entirely.

"It's like Swiss cheese," said Dr. Gregory Poland, director of the Mayo Clinic's Vaccine Research Group in Rochester, Minnesota.

"It is going to leak out. You're just trying to prevent the tidal waves."

What are the chances that every one of these people will fully follow all self quarantine guidelines? While these people have not been confirmed as positive for the virus and are self isolating “out of an abundance of caution”, chances are IMO that not everyone will follow the correct procedures meticulously. Hopefully none of these people are in the incubating phase. Also, are they separated from all their family members?

Whatever the case I find these numbers troubling, jmo. This is a large number of people. Hopefully none of them are positive.

I hope some other investigators really try to determine the main source of how all the passengers caught the virus on that Princess Cruise ship. It may help to know so that steps can be taken on other cruises and other places like Motels and Hotels and even Hospitals to know where the breakdown was on that Cruise ship.

One theory I read that may make sense is if the plumbing had vent pipes that were shared with individual room's plumbing. Its hard to describe unless you are familiar with how elbow joints under sinks work to control odors.

Usually an elbow joint has water at the bottom of the elbow so that fumes dont back up into a home. The water in the elbow acts as a barrier. With Cruise ships, there was a theory I read where the plumbing may have tied rooms together and vent pipes may have been shared with the plumbing. Even the toilets use water as a vapor barrier but when someone flushes, there is a small opportunity for backflow of gases from the main sewage pipe to enter back into the bathroom.

Its just a theory but I do hope they figure it out so everyone can learn how to prevent another disasterous outbreak on another ship.

I once tracked the venting that was in the bathroom ceiling fan and went into my attic and expected the vent to go up through the roof and outside. To my horror, the venting went right into the attic and that was it. Probably someone cutting corners when they built the house.
Thanks for this excellent explanation! Your story made me flash back to the legionnairs' outbreak in 1976.

"Nearly six months after the outbreak, the CDC announced that it had cracked the case. The Legionella bacteria thrived in hot weather and in water such as the air-conditioning system perched on the roof of the 19-story Bellevue-Stratford Hotel."

It’s like China 2.0

I suppose he will “only” be sanctioned for speaking out against the Japanese governments epic fail, as opposed to being “detained”.

I’m not really going to quibble over the difference. Because ultimately each government is going to extraordinary lengths to silence/*discredit whistleblowers.

go figure: Iran of all places, seems to be the most forthcoming.

(and yes I’m being a factious, China’s recorded human rights abuse is unconscionable.)

*edit:
“The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is.”
Winston Churchill

He was exceeding brave to speak out. I hope the consequences of his video are not too severe. In my opinion, he's a hero.

I would say that the odds of all of them self quarantining are 0.
Lots of people are stupid or ignorant.

WHO daily presser notes. 2/20

China 74,675 cases total including 2,221 deaths, decline in “confirmed” (e.d. cough cough, no mention of clinically diagnosed today) cases and we are encouraged. Outside china there are 1,076 cases in 26 countries with a total of 7 deaths. In last 24 hours, Iran has reported 5 cases, two of which have died. This is the first report from Iran. Of all cases outside of China, more than half were on the Princess. He spoke to those getting off ship have no symptoms (e.d. keep taking that aspirin and Halls so no symptoms?) and a negative test and no contact with a positive person in the last 14 days. Japan has also advised passengers to stay at home for another 14 days and monitor their temperature (e.d. our US twitter guy is out being a tourist and said nothing of such). WHO’s main role is to coordinate the global response. Our team is on the ground looking at transitivity and actions China has taken… he talks much of coordination/skipped.. …… They are going to have weekly diplomatic meetings in Geneva. That is why no media meeting yesterday. Twice a week we have call with frontline workers to share info on what does and doesn’t work in trmt. We have seen that the earlier pts are treated the better they do. We are also looking forward to two clinical trials of therapeutics prioritized by WHO, one with ?ritonavir? and the other is testing ?remsivir? We expect results in 3 weeks. I have written to 12 executives of PPE companies to ask for their help to ensure supply to protect the health care workers. IT IS TIME FOR SOLIDARITY. Today, we had a call with faith based organizations, another way we are reaching communities. We are partnering with Africa CDC to coordinate our efforts to prepare them for the arrival of the virus. That is where we believe there and other countries with weaker health systems the virus could be a serious danger. THE WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY CONTINUES TO CONTAIN THIS OUTBREAK, let’s not squander this opportunity. (e.d. let’s make a drinking game of when he says this and solidarity?) This window will close.

Q&A

Re decision of Russia to refuse Chinese citizens and discharged pt numbers. A. 30 countries have reported to us they are taking some travel measures. We publish to all to share info with other countries. Don’t have discharge numbers, we’ll get back to you.

Q ? A. # of cases in S Korea today are from distinct clusters which have been identified. Although the numbers seems quite high, they are linked to known existing outbreaks so that doesn’t change the stance in the global epidemiology, it does signal that the Koreans are following up very closely. Total is 104, and 22 cases today. With measures they can take, the numbers are manageable. It is an early stage

Reporter from Africa asks if the Chloroquine drug for malaria works for COVID A. There is no proven treatment, there are ongoing clinical trials. Priority by Who are ?? Loponivir and ?? and Resmidivir and resmidivir. As to chloroquine, there is no proof it is effective.

Re action on Princess, do you feel quarantine was to aid in keeping the infection from others on board or more about ensuring the infection was more to keep the virus off the mainland? A. Our understanding is to contain on the ship first. This is priority. That is why they were heavily following contacts. It is both though.

Japanese reporter.. re two deaths.. several experts have questioned how quarantine done. What do we know so far in terms of infection control on the ship was it done properly A. The main objective was to contain the virus and doing drastic infection and control to avoid close contact and transmission. And now second phase. No symptoms and negative PCR and no contact with positive in last 14 days, and now have been asked to continue to isolate at home. This is what they are doing now. And 2 people who died they were over 80 and had underlying conditions and considering there were more than 600 cases, and this is 2 deaths. Considering fatality rate and underlying conditions, that is where we expect the virus. Having deaths, considering fatality rate we have to expect.

FEED LOST ON ALL CHANNELS AND LINKS – finally found the full presser at link below

Re expert team ..have they communicated with you re origin of virus, and many workers going back to work, and what is your thought on that. treatment A. We expect to have recommendations on what they covered there as soon as they have finished their field work. As soon as they finish, we will have their recommendations. As to source of the virus, much speculation. We at WHO we rely on evidence. There is a lot of information and conspiracy theory and we should not trust until science and evidence and we get it from experts

Has WHO gotten enough money for this emergency A. We have put out for 675 million US dollars. Some pledges but considering urgency and dangerous enemy, we are surprised it is not something we expect. I would like to take this call on to assist. The small number in the rest of the world is a small opportunity. We need to attack while small, if we don’t hit now with window of opportunity. It’s not being treated as public enemy #1 and I call upon the international community to respond while we have time to respond. The finance numbers given now are really low.

Re vaccines A. We need to contain.. our objective is to contain. There is a chance to do so with window of opportunity While using this to hammer, we need to invest in vaccines We need to balance to contain now and prepare for the future for investing in the vaccine. Matter of balance. Also to help weak countries, this is most important part of the plan to detect and prepare for them.

Re WHO not being fast enough to quell misinformation, and some folks not invited to scientific forums last week A. As to misinformation, what I would ask is we have to take it seriously and do something. In our discussions with FB and google…they have signed to help us. WHO involvement of scientists, it was an open invitation and anyone can sign in, they are welcome.

Which countries in SE Asia are weakest for outbreak? A. Without mentioning names, all the countries do not have capabilities to detect and contain. We need to fund and bring expertise. They are known, more support needed in this area.

A Texas-based genetic engineering company has finished developing a coronavirus vaccine.

Scientists at Greffex Inc. — which has a corporate headquarters in Houston and a laboratory in Aurora, Colorado — completed the vaccine this week, company president and CEO John Price said.

Now, the vaccine will move to animal testing by the necessary government agencies — the FDA in the U.S. — and similar regulatory bodies in China and other heavily affected countries.

For safety reasons, Greffex did not use a living or killed virus to form the vaccine. Instead, adenovirus-based vector vaccines, which are widely employed against various infectious diseases or cancers, were used.

Yeah, think about all those positives on the ship. As WHO said, the numbers in China are the tip of the iceberg. He meant it MOO as the two posts I did earlier upthread are pretty much showing that as of February 11th, they were only reporting 62% of the cases to WHO, those that had positive tests and had symptoms.

That means that 38% were not reported. The suspected category was really gaining steam.. (those who had they symptoms and were traced back to a positive person..but not tested due to test kit shortage and lack of hospital to get that confirmatory xray to get into clinically positive) but has NEVER been on the Johns Hopkins graph or reported to the WHO.

And the graph even at the 11th showed that China couldn't keep up with getting suspected folks tested or CAT scan of lungs, yet they report to their government they are COVID cases. As you can see in graph, those suspected cases were growing and growing even as of the 11th, and you can bet they are extremely large in numbers now and growing vs. these reported cases today. MOO (see green daily numbers on graph)

This is an EXTREMELY important post, dixiegirl

The total number of people having this virus in their system is being hugely under reported by the numbers coming from China.

So the actual death rate would decrease, but the pool of people that may be capable of transmitting the virus is very much underreported

AND let’s not forget that the current testing is reported to have up to a 40% False Negative rate

My opinion from reading and listening to him and SIL on this MSM link...

MSM video starts out by he and his wife outside on balcony without masks leaning into next door balcony joking about the virus. Then, RW was flown back to Travis and told his SIL that he had heard positive folks were on board. He was pizzed, and told that to family. So SIL in this video on Tuesday slams how angry she is that she heard that 7 folks on the flight were positive.. only to find.................

Wednesday, RW finds out he was one of the positive ones and slams CDC of how "they" handled it, "I don't have any symptoms, I think the CDC should should be embarrassed how they are handling this whole situation" yet states that his positive test was from JAPAN!

I guess he's siding with how China is reporting as posted upthread? If you test positive, but have no symptoms, you don't have the disease?:confused:o_O Huh?

I definitely noted how MSM put that report together to make it obvious that he's benefited from what he was complaining about, and how his SIL was slamming govm't re potential of getting infected inflight and "folks were taking off masks" before she knew he was one of the positives, and that media had pics of them on the ship not wearing the masks. Oh the irony. But just like MJ/JJ and JG, they are now complaining again about something else.

Please help me understand as this is like MJ/JJ and JG and her hubby lashing out as same scenario pretty much with them. Are the media purposefully shaming these folks that were doing social media slams to see how they react to "they are the very ones they were *itchig about". Sure seems so. :D;):D

Where is the logic of these folks, truly, that have been bashing, when he himself and the others above who had the fortune to come back when positive vs. left behind? Oh yeah, and then as some others that found out they were one of the positives, throws shade and proceeds to tell the camera he learned of the result (on Wednesday) and it's been two hours and he still is awaiting to be transferred. Will be interesting to follow him.

*steps off soapbox*
