What US officials today can learn from a 1918 flu

From CNN's Zachary B. Wolf

You might have heard about the Spanish flu — the global flu pandemic that killed more than 670,000 Americans and tens of millions of people worldwide. It's basically the worst case scenario for what could happen with a pandemic outbreak.

There's no indication that coronavirus will turn into that: Health officials aren't even calling this outbreak a pandemic yet.

But John M. Barry, who wrote a book about the 1918 outbreak, has studied the issue extensively. He wrote in Smithsonian Magazine a few years ago that one reason that pandemic was so devastating is that, in the early stages, health officials didn't tell the truth.

There were a number of reasons for that, including that the US was in the midst of World War I and Congress had passed a law — the Sedition act, since largely repealed — that made it illegal to criticize the government.

"Against this background, while influenza bled into American life, public health officials, determined to keep morale up, began to lie," Barry wrote, pointing to examples of officials spreading happy talk and the press at the time not pushing them for the truth. "That is why, in my view, the most important lesson from 1918 is to tell the truth," Barry wrote.

One thing that has really been concerning to me is how at first when all the cases were in China, this felt so far away.

Then as other countries began seeing isolated cases, it raised the bar of fear in me. Lastly, starting to see news stories of people being tested right in my own state and began to seriously wonder if I had crossed paths with person X being tested.

Its frightening how this virus has migrated all the way to where a lot of us live. Im glad the numbers are still relatively low in other countries but the big unknown is how far and wide this virus will reach and to what extent. Its all a big uknown right now that I dont think anyone even in the CDC or WHO knows for sure how this will eventually turn out.

Prayers for all who have been affected in one way or another. And praying that we will see a downturn soon.

When the CDC was dismantled it used to monitor and work in 49 states. Now it has minimal existence in less than 10.
The very tools to battle this were destroyed and now look where we are at

Just curious, with everything that we currently know, what are everyone’s biggest fears/concerns?
I think mine are the possibility of being exposed to the virus (I have a somewhat weak immune system) and community ignorance to heed precautions when asked. With the info from the CDC being funneled thru the administration, I’m further concerned that we, the public won’t even know what is the truth and how to properly avoid risks. How do we even know how many positive cases and quarantined “possibles” are in our specific area(s)? Rural areas and small towns won’t have a CNN report to check for cases in their communities. Who’s informing them? I truly hope Pence has a plan in effect to inform and educate not just cypher detrimental info. MOOOOO

Virus exposure (due to asthma) and economic disaster are in a tie for me.

I love evaporated milk. I often use it in tea, and yes in my pumpkin pie (grandmother's recipe handed down). Good thing about it is, since it's canned, it will last much longer. Once opened though, still needs refrigeration.

If you want to drink, or put on cereal, do you dilute it first?

IMO, right now we need to watch what happens in Japan, Italy, and South Korea very closely. I believe we’ll know very shortly where this whole thing is headed based on what we see in those locations. All three have community spread occurring, and all three will be more forthcoming with what’s actually taking place.

I don’t really participate in social media all that much (other than here), so I’m curious, for those of you that do, are you seeing much being posted by individuals in those three countries??

I’m finding nothing to indicate the CDChas been dismantled but I did find something indicating our nation’s pandemic response structure was dismantled and massive cuts were made to the CDC?

In 2018, the Trump administration fired the government’s entire pandemic response chain of command, including the White House management infrastructure. In numerous phone calls and emails with key agencies across the U.S. government, the only consistent response I encountered was distressed confusion. If the United States still has a clear chain of command for pandemic response, the White House urgently needs to clarify what it is—not just for the public but for the government itself, which largely finds itself in the dark.

But other White House efforts included reducing $15 billion in national health spending and cutting the global disease-fighting operational budgets of the CDC, NSC, DHS, and HHS. And the government’s $30 million Complex Crises Fund was eliminated.

In May 2018, Trump ordered the NSC’s entire global health security unit shut down, calling for reassignment of Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer and dissolution of his team inside the agency. The month before, then-White House National Security Advisor John Bolton pressured Ziemer’s DHS counterpart, Tom Bossert, to resign along with his team. Neither the NSC nor DHS epidemic teams have been replaced. The global health section of the CDC was so drastically cut in 2018 that much of its staff was laid off and the number of countries it was working in was reduced from 49 to merely 10. Meanwhile, throughout 2018, the U.S. Agency for International Development and its director, Mark Green, came repeatedly under fire from both the White House and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. And though Congress has so far managed to block Trump administration plans to cut the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps by 40 percent, the disease-fighting cadres have steadily eroded as retiring officers go unreplaced.

Trump Has Sabotaged America’s Coronavirus Response

Much more at link. I’m not sure exactly what all it means or how it could affect us. But it seems like systems set up to control outbreaks have been eroded. Which is scary. If so I hope that can be reconfigured quickly.

it has a tinny taste, but I don't mind as long as it whitens
IDK about cereal?

I already posted it, easy to find. These are facts that these actions will directly lead to many many deaths.

Trump spent the past 2 years slashing the government agencies responsible for handling the coronavirus outbreak

"forecasts say a pandemic outbreak could last up to 10 months, and 40% of the country's workforce could be sidelined by illness or caring for family members."

A consideration also is when kids are sick and parents are in need of help, it's often gramma/grandpa...who are retired and over 60. They may not be available as those are The exact folks that should run from that situation iykwim.

My sister in law lives in Seoul. She posts a couple times a month on FB she posted something about the virus in Mexico. But she’s planning a trip to Spain and is worried it won’t happen.

I have a slight cold today, and of course, I immediately think that I have Coronavirus! o_O

Time for me to take a break.

I developed a cold day before yesterday and have a low grade fever today. I totally tallied up how many days it had been since I'd been to the hospital in Atlanta. I guess 26 or so is safe.

London coronavirus patient turned up at hospital in Uber taxi

"The first person diagnosed with coronavirus in London turned up unannounced at a hospital in an Uber taxi after falling ill.

Two staff from Lewisham hospital in south London are now in isolation at home after coming into contact with the woman, a Chinese national who had recently arrived in the city from China.

Lewisham hospital on Thursday confirmed the unnamed patient had not followed public health officials’ advice and had simply “self-presented” at its A&E unit on Sunday afternoon.

She did not arrive by ambulance or her own private vehicle and went straight to the A&E reception desk to report her symptoms – both clear breaches of guidance aimed at stopping the spread of the virus.

No other patients were exposed to the risk of infection by the manner of her arrival, the hospital said.

The woman was then sent home pending the results of her tests. On Wednesday she was taken to another London hospital, St Thomas’, for treatment."
Oh my goodness, again !.....moo

I do not. It’s not thick like condensed milk. And it has a tiny bit of a sweet taste.

I believe this is a. To stop potential panic b. To stop markets from crashing
Jmoo

And the stock market is clearly the greater priority. But if we have an actual pandemic here then it's going to crash it anyway. But apparently the citizens of the US protecting themselves is not the highest priority.

I would swear back in early January they were recommending masks and hand washing. Now that there is a shortage they have news anchors actually saying they could be even WORSE for you because they will cause you to touch your face. Baloney! I believe they are saying that solely due to shortage and not because there is any remote truth to that. Basically now everyone out buying masks is effectively stealing from others.

Are you intentionally misleading us? That says nothing about the CDC working in only 10 states! Do you have a link for that?
