I can buy Everclear at the liquor store--it's 190 proof. I use it to make eggnog during the holidays. Strong stuff lol.

While on this subject do know that:
Everclear can be very very very dangerous to drink moo. See google. Be very very careful about not only drinking it, but serving it.

I thought, "Who has been touching these items that I am simply tossing into my fridge (along with other items that I will be eating from/drinking from, etc??) How often do people think about this?

This is what I've been thinking now for about a week.

FOMITES!!!

Wall Street may shut trading floor amid coronavirus concerns: report

The New York Stock Exchange is reportedly considering closing its trading floor on Wall Street amid growing concerns over the coronavirus crisis.

The world’s most famous financial market is evaluating their options if the virus continues to spread fear of a wider pandemic and a global economic disaster, Fox Business Network’s Charlie Gasparino reported.

Kind of like the fable "The Ant and the Grasshopper." Though, I'll gladly share with family as needed.

Yes, one of my favorites. Dear daughter thought it was a divine gift from a super sale. HA!!! She is a frequent shopper at "Mommymart". :)

Can the Sharing Economy Work Under Quarantine?

"What will the coronavirus mean for the sharing economy?

"Sharing economy" is a phrase that faded away once people became disillusioned with the Ubers and Airbnbs of the world. But in the context of a communicable disease the sharing moniker seems relevant. What happens if, as many expect, Covid-19 spreads deeper into the Western world?

The impact of epidemics on tech services has been mixed in China. Authorities shut down ride-hailing in Wuhan and prohibited drivers in Beijing from ferrying passengers into or out of the city. Drivers are reportedly installing plastic dividers and wearing masks. But delivery workers remain an important part of the urban economy—while providing customers with printouts assuring them that that no one with a fever touched their food. The 2002 SARS outbreak actually had a “curiously beneficial impact on the Chinese internet sector,” because people shopped online while holed up in their homes, according to a biography of Jack Ma, Alibaba Group Holding Ltd’s co-founder. (Today's Alibaba, however, doesn't see a silver lining in the coronavirus outbreak.)

Investors don’t seem optimistic about the American sharing economy. In recent weeks, shares of Uber Technologies Inc. and Lyft Inc., the two most prominent sharing economy companies, have dropped even faster than the S&P 500 Index.

There are still questions about how the spread of the disease could impact ride-hailing. Uber’s airport trips, which account for about 15% of its business, will likely be hurt if tourism and business travel decline. If the worst comes to pass, the government could try to shut down ride-hailing services to prevent the spread of the disease. Or, conceivably, if it shuts down public transit instead, demand for rides could increase.

hard to predict how different factors would interact to impact his business. “Do we have a problem with supply of drivers?” he said on CNBC. “Do we have a problem with supply of restaurants? Do we have a problem with demand?”

Are DoorDash’s executives just more bullish than Maloney? Maybe. “There is a non-zero chance they are banking on coronavirus freakout and associated demand spike for food delivery?” guessed one finance industry Twitter user.

I think the more probable answer has less to do with DoorDash’s predictions about the coronavirus, and more about more mundane business concerns. It's going to need money, and might have to enter whatever market it can get."

(That stuff’ll burn a whole right through you. :D )

ETA: Not to rain on your Christmas party of course!

(Might I suggest pot brownies instead? :) Might be a little better on the esophagus and gastric tract...maybe shape them in Christmas tree cookie cutters or something :) )

A 'drive-thu' coronavirus testing centre has been set up in Edinburgh

NHS Lothian has opened a "drive-thru" coronavirus testing centre in Edinburgh, allowing people to be seen by professionals while sitting in their cars.

Some patients will be able to drive onto the Western General hospital campus in the west of the city to access the service, which is available by appointment only.

So far 500 people have been tested for coronavirus in Scotland - all have come back negative.

On Friday, it was announced that a British national had died from the Covid-19 virus after being infected on the Diamond Princess cruise liner in Japan.

DH and I never go to cruise ship buffets, either. We've actually stopped going to the main dining rooms, as well, and prefer to dine in casual onboard restaurants (i.e. pizzeria) or specialty dining venues (upcharge). Room service is always a good choice, as well. When in port, we almost always find a nice restaurant to enjoy local color and cuisine. Found a great new place in St. Thomas on our cruise last month (Navy Beach - fabulous seafood).
My kids when they were little ate non stop pizza and popcorn when we went on cruises. I think the kid pit stops on board that had the sign free enticed them...LOL

:):)Since were talking about hand washing...I thought I’d add that it’s probably a good idea to remove any rings/bracelets. I just took my wed band off, as well as bracelets. Germs can linger on jewelry even with the best hand washing. NOT trying to cause panic here, just throwing it out there.

Seriously, to help prevent germs, the best tips I have seen here are to try to avoid touching your face area as much as usual, and to properly wash hands and do it more often than just bathroom breaks.

I honestly have been trying to do both of those things, and the most surprising thing I have encountered is I cannot believe how many times I keep touching my face area. It is shocking when you start paying attention to it. Whether its scratching your nose, or rubbing your eyes, its like an automatic response to go to your face area. I have been trying hard to at least slow that down and I have had mixed success with it. But just being aware of it has helped reduce it because now I am concious about it when I catch myself going to my face area.

Its really bizarre and I had no idea until this thread that it was a "thing" we all do.

This is a great small article about how we innoculate ourselves with infections by touching our face area.

"RESULTS:
On average, each of the 26 observed students touched their face 23 times per hour. Of all face touches, 44% (1,024/2,346) involved contact with a mucous membrane, whereas 56% (1,322/2,346) of contacts involved nonmucosal areas. Of mucous membrane touches observed, 36% (372) involved the mouth, 31% (318) involved the nose, 27% (273) involved the eyes, and 6% (61) were a combination of these regions.

CONCLUSION:
Increasing medical students' awareness of their habituated face-touching behavior and improving their understanding of self-inoculation as a route of transmission may help to improve hand hygiene compliance. Hand hygiene programs aiming to improve compliance with before and after patient contact should include a message that mouth and nose touching is a common practice. Hand hygiene is therefore an essential and inexpensive preventive method to break the colonization and transmission cycle associated with self-inoculation.

I wonder how much autonomy the US states will be given in the coming days/weeks regarding coronavirus. As opposed to having to follow Federal guidelines only. Will be interesting.

(nonpolitical musings)

MOO.

Once a State of Emergency is declare, federal or state some laws are suspended or reduced restrictions. Transportation, labor restrictions are a few. This insures supply chains and manpower are readily available to assist.

Yes there’s a video of this somewhere...glad you brought it up. It was interesting to see. The workers in hazmat suits “hold up signs” to the car window when you pull up that says “please show me your ID”, etc....you’ll have to see it, making note.

This is why schools in some states will be closed down because I have seen young and old kids never washing their hands and sneezing with out covering their mouth in schools when I taught. It will be a disaster.

I do, but I am holding off trying it until I need some big guns. I had a few puffs back in the day (didn't inhale!) and didn't care for the taste.
