A 'drive-thu' coronavirus testing centre has been set up in Edinburgh

NHS Lothian has opened a "drive-thru" coronavirus testing centre in Edinburgh, allowing people to be seen by professionals while sitting in their cars.

Some patients will be able to drive onto the Western General hospital campus in the west of the city to access the service, which is available by appointment only.

So far 500 people have been tested for coronavirus in Scotland - all have come back negative.

On Friday, it was announced that a British national had died from the Covid-19 virus after being infected on the Diamond Princess cruise liner in Japan.

Brilliant! They did that first in South Korea, and glad another place is doing such. Works in areas with folks that have cars (not in Wuhan or New York City)

Coronavirus in Boston, Massachusetts: What We Know

Coronavirus in Massachusetts: What We Know Right Now
The latest update on everything you need to know about the COVID-19 virus and the impact it is having locally
By Marc Fortier • Published February 28, 2020 • Updated 1 hour ago

Federal health officials have said the coronavirus, which emerged in December in Wuhan, China, has sickened at least 60 people in the United States.

A total of more than 81,000 cases around the world — mainly in China — have been reported and killed 2,700 globally.

In the past week, the focus has turned more closely to how the deadly virus could impact Massachusetts, and specifically, Boston. Here's what we know so far:

How many coronavirus cases are there in Massachusetts?
State health officials said Wednesday that they have had 680 people in quarantine so far, meaning they are monitored just in case they present symptoms. While 377 completed their monitoring with no symptoms, 231 are still under self-quarantine in their homes.

So far, there has only been one documented case of coronavirus in Massachusetts.

Officials said behind the scenes they are taking a number of "strategic actions" like communicating daily with the CDC and other federal and regional agencies as well as instituting a streamlined organizational system that will facilitate information sharing.

Just want to add that I went to Walmart in south San Antonio yesterday. There was plenty of hand sanitizer in several sizes. In fact, I bought antibacterial hand wipes, which I didn't have. Seems it all goes down to where you are right now.
^^^^^ This in West Texas also. Masks are the only hard to find items that I am aware of......moo

Observations in Walmart today: (that were not there last week)

1) Big aisle displays of - Robustussin, Motrin, Mucinex

2) On the grocery side- big aisle displays of Lysol products, Clorox products and a big display of Clorox Laundry Sanitation Liquid

3) The Lysol sprays were wiped out on the shelf, I think I saw one on there and the Great Value equivalent was wiped out too with one or two on the shelf (there was that big aisle display that had more on it though, but I tend to think people dont notice those as much)

4) When I was getting my Lysol products, a woman shopping asked me where the bleach was, that made me take more notice of what others were buying. It looked like lots were "stocking up" and the store was fairly busy for a Friday during the day.

I am sure HQ is right on it with all the displays and said "get these on the floor" as that is where folks heads are at now.

5) got most of my stuff done, stil have more on my list, frankly I am really tired of shopping.
I noticed Hydrogen Peroxide was wiped out yesterday. A store employee told me that HP is the best product to wipe out the virus. Lysol doesn't kill the C entirely

NET Health: Several East Texans under self-monitoring following international travel

NET Health: Several East Texans under self-monitoring following international travel
By Blake Holland and KLTV Digital Media Staff | February 28, 2020 at 10:30 AM CST - Updated February 28 at 3:46 PM

TYLER, TEXAS (KLTV) - Some East Texans are currently under self-monitoring following international travel to places involved in the coronavirus outbreak.

That’s according to NET Health’s Russell Hopkins, who directs the Public Health Emergency Preparedness Department.

“That count changes every day,” Hopkins said.

These people are not under quarantine, according to Hopkins. He says self-monitoring means the person has been asked to keep track of any symptoms they develop as well as track where they go and who they interact with.

“We receive their temperatures a couple of times a day and make sure they aren’t symptomatic,” Hopkins said. “We’re dealing also with the CDC and DSHS as they send folks back to our community who may need some sort of monitoring or follow up. It’s a busy time around here.”

Why South Korea may have more coronavirus cases than the US

The South Koreans have been on this as much as they could from the beginning while our leaders just kept telling us about the flu numbers being worse. Makes me sad and angry at the same time..we go around puffing ourselves up as 'the best' and frankly I'm not seeing it at all...once proud federal institutions...what's left? Hollow reputations? Its up to the states and mine is still warning me about the flu being a greater threat on their website...

From your article:
“South Korea had tested a total of 66,652 people for the COVID-19 coronavirus virus as of 4 p.m. local time Thursday, whereas Japan had reported administering roughly 1,890 tests and the U.S. only 445.

Where is the sobbing-face emoji? And then followed by that emoji guy that runs around panicked in circles again.

Democrats demand investigation after whistleblower complaint on new coronavirus

Democrats are demanding a briefing from the Trump administration next week and urging an inspector general investigation after a whistleblower working for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services filed a complaint with the U.S. Office of Special Counsel reportedly alleging that more than a dozen employees were sent to receive the first Americans repatriated from Wuhan, China, without proper training or protective gear for new coronavirus infection control.

We should check further back in these threads for the links/photos a couple weeks ago of people being taken off a cruise ship in a New Jersey port. IIRC, EMS was wheeling sick people off the ship with nary any sign of protective gear. Rather ironic, as news reports from other countries - China, etc. showed EMS and medical workers dressed fully in protective gear. Why not the US? It's so stupid.

Connecticut Public Health Department Approved to Test For Coronavirus

Connecticut Public Health Department Approved to Test For Coronavirus
Published 4 hours ago • Updated 4 hours ago

Any positive test results would also be sent to the CDC for additional testing.

“With testing now available in Connecticut, we can turn around test results within 24 hours of getting samples," Public Health Commissioner Renee Coleman Mitchell Said. "This will improve the investigation of any future cases and tracking down anyone potentially exposed to the disease."

There are no confirmed coronavirus cases in Connecticut, according to Gov. Lamont.

I feel like I need to start a protest group downtown and I’ll make signs that say “Test The Patients!”

But that would be a public group gathering where germs spread, so I’ll just stew silently and vent on WS :D

Where did the new coronavirus come from? Past outbreaks provide hints

Where did the new coronavirus come from? Past outbreaks provide hints

As scientists and public health officials around the world scramble to contain the deadly coronavirus outbreak, some researchers are also racing to solve the enduring mystery of where the newly identified virus came from.

The coronavirus, which first sickened people in China in December, is thought to have passed from animals to humans, like many similar pathogens, but nothing has been confirmed yet by any peer-reviewed scientific research, global public health agency or academic expert. Beyond that, little is known about its origin.

Although finding the source wouldn't necessarily help scientists develop vaccines or other direct treatments, it could provide crucial pieces of information on how it emerged and evolved. And scientists are using lessons learned from previous outbreaks to know how to approach this one.

Speaking of NJ...

Coronavirus Update: N.J., Conn. Get Approval To Test For The Virus Within The State

There’s been a big development in the Tri-State Area in the fight against the coronavirus.

New Jersey and Connecticut have received federal approval to administer a test for the virus, eliminating the need to send samples out of state.

During the CDC press conference this morning, one of the questions was along these lines why the US has tested so few. I didnt like their response and felt like they were brushing off the really good question. I actually quit watching it right at that moment because I felt we were getting lied to.

IMO, the answer should have been "You are right sir, we should have been testing many more suspected cases. Even if we found out they were not infected, it would have proven we did not have more cases, rather than just telling them to self isolate and hope they dont have it"
