Its all we have in the arsenal right now.....

As the coronavirus spreads around the world, International health authorities are hoping countries can learn a few lessons from China _ namely, that quarantines can be effective and acting fast is crucial. As virus spreads, other countries can learn from China

If he was clever, he's on a peninsula and can easily close borders. Will he? For now, all we have are infected areas closing borders. Why aren't healthy areas closing border and even expelling ill people?
I was just thinking about that when I posted the article about containment. I don't think any politician in the US has the balls to do it....until its to late and they are desperate. I expect it to run through the states....but I'm a disaster Debbie.....

China has bolted people in their homes and is using wrist band analytics to monitor movement of people. It's unlikely that these tools could work in an unruly defiant entitled society.

I have to agree, particularly given government releases about controlling the information that will released from the USA. Every other country on the planet is expected to release updates on prep and infections, but the white house seems to be saying that the virus is a hoax. It's twilight zone plus one.

Yes which is exactly why discussions about stocking up on food is not fear mongering or whatever. I’ve personally watched every video I can out of Wuhan on this, including trucks trying to get in to get people food in the middle of logistical obstacles, “remote control cars going to get buns” so...

(Sitting on hands and taking a break. I’ll be damned if someone’s going to come in here and equivocate the past month plus of discussions as not being based on academics and monitoring the situation since day 1.

Here is a piece of good news....

Man cleared after coronavirus quarantine coughs in TV interview
A Pennsylvania man who was quarantined in San Diego with his 3-year-old daughter after attending a memorial service in Wuhan, China, where his father-in-law died of the coronavirus, began to cough enough to need water during a TV interview Friday.

Oil prices crashing....no one will be moving about...

Oil prices are crashing to what? They've been on unsteady ground since someone decided that fossil fuels had to be destroyed to safe the planet.

Crashing oil price sounds like a headline, or did West Texas hit $30?

It’s people who are not prepared that are going to go around infecting people, going to the store because you didn’t get what you needed when you had the chance.

Academics don't help when the supply chain fails.

Speaking of tourism, here in Florida (Orlando)
our (R) Gov. held a press conference to allay
fear considering we're the #1 Tourist Destination in US and have thousands of foreign visitors daily, and the Gov. refused to
discuss statistics when questioned by a reporter. Claimed it's a state law preventing dissemination of # of cases, # being monitored, etc. He's just following orders from
DC.
I'm sure our theme parks are doing the happy dance w/ a news blackout on the virus.
Heck disney doesn't want the bottom line affected.
I feel like we're living in Cuba under Fidel Castro.

I've been reading up on the Asian flu epidemic of 1957. It was similar, probably not quite as many deaths. Reading about it in old newspapers at Newspapers.com, it caused no economic crisis. The U.S. had a much better industrial policy and balanced foreign trade profile back then (IOW, we didn't rely on foreign countries to supply most of our manufactured products).

The worst part of the epidemic in the U.S. lasted through the summer and fall of 1957, but a vaccination was developed in October and cases dropped off after that. Amazing how well it was handled with little drama and a relatively quick vaccine back in 1957.
