I've been reading up on the Asian flu epidemic of 1957. It was similar, probably not quite as many deaths. Reading about it in old newspapers at Newspapers.com, it caused no economic crisis. The U.S. had a much better industrial policy and balanced foreign trade profile back then (IOW, we didn't rely on foreign countries to supply most of our manufactured products).

The worst part of the epidemic in the U.S. lasted through the summer and fall of 1957, but a vaccination was developed in October and cases dropped off after that. Amazing how well it was handled with little drama and a relatively quick vaccine back in 1957.

Thanks for this. It had 1.5 to 2 million deaths worldwide. Took a screenshot of death rates for all the ones listed.

COSTA MESA, Calif. (KABC) -- The federal government on Friday withdrew its request to use a Costa Mesa facility as a coronavirus quarantine site after a large amount of push back from Orange County officials and residents.

The move comes after a U.S. District Judge Josephine Staton approved the extension of a temporary restraining order, or TRO, blocking the effort.

"This is a victory for the citizens of Costa Mesa and Orange County," Mayor Katrina Foley said in a statement. "But the government has not promised not to place future infected persons there, so the battle is not over."

Earlier this week, the Orange County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to support the City of Costa Mesa in a legal battle against the state and federal government's plan to house 30 to 50 infected patients at the Fairview Developmental Center. The patients, who have been infected or exposed to novel coronavirus, would have been transferred from the current quarantine site established at Travis Air Force Base.

Oil prices are crashing to what? They've been on unsteady ground since someone decided that fossil fuels had to be destroyed to safe the planet.

Crashing oil price sounds like a headline, or did West Texas hit $30?
We are at aprox. 45 a barrel, last time I looked....I paid $2.15 a gallon two days ago.....moo

What’s the deal on gas prices now?

First world problems I realize.

They have dropped to £1.16.7 a litre for petrol here in Scotland because of the virus from 1.21.7 a litre in early January. I would much rather pay more and not have the Coronavirus with people sick and dying.

Wow....

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Saturday called on the public to cooperate in a "tough battle" to contain the coronavirus outbreak in coming weeks as the country prepares to hold the Olympic Games in Tokyo as planned.

"To be frank, we cannot win this battle through the efforts of the government alone," Abe told a news conference two days after calling for all schools nationwide to be closed for more than a month. The abrupt decision caught teachers, parents and their employers off guard, sparking a fresh wave of criticism.

Abe had already come under fire for his handling of the coronavirus, and Saturday's news conference was his first since the outbreak.

Great. The states is bracing for a rise in numbers, unusable tests were distributed, and some places have not been tested (Maui).

Are survivors cured, or no longer mortally ill?
I still don’t understand why they haven’t tested ppl on Maui. I live in Iowa part time and don’t have to worry much. But I travel to my 2nd home on Maui a lot. Decided to stay in Iowa until testing is done on Maui. Iowa seems a lot safer right now. Especially in a town of 7,200 people! Fingers crossed

Nurses sound alarm on hospital readiness after 124 CA health workers self-quarantined:
“Lack of preparedness will create an unsustainable national health care staffing crisis...
...handling of this COVID-19 case [was] a system failure and not a success.” Nation’s hospitals unprepared for COVID-19

The single COVID-19 patient admitted to the facility on Feb. 19 has now led to the self-quarantine at home of at least 36 RNs and 88 other health care workers.

These 124 nurses and health care workers, who are needed now more than ever, have instead been sidelined. Lack of preparedness will create an unsustainable national health care staffing crisis.

Nurses view the handling of this COVID-19 case as a system failure and not a success. National Nurses United RNs are speaking out because they are dedicated to protecting the health and safety of their patients, health care workers, and the public.

Nurses employed by the University of California medical centers had met with UC officials four times and written repeatedly, starting from Jan. 28, to notify them about the urgency to prepare for coronavirus, make information requests, and offer to work with them. On Feb. 18, UC nurses wrote to Janet Napolitano, the UC system president, to demand increased protection for nurses and patients against the coronavirus. UC Davis nurses on Feb. 11, eight days before this patient was admitted, approached hospital management and asked them to institute infection control plans that already existed and had been in place during the 2014 ebola outbreak, but the hospital did not.

Good morning all. Pending negative for my family. It was a basic swab test. The Lake Oswego school where the infected patient worked is closed for next week. But since they lived in my city, exposure areas are now high and its another case of getting it from an unknown source. My family has voluntarily decided to self isolate in our home for 2 weeks.
