Now theres a scary thought...imo
This is probably not going to happen on a wide scale ...imo
1/ One of the MOST critical systems responses for controlling #COVID19 as it spreads more will be making sure that young, healthy patients DO NOT go to emergency rooms if they have mild symptoms. They should call their doctors to discuss & likely self-isolate.

But they are saying masks do not help the general public who are not sick and should only be worn by people who are sick to prevent spreading the illness to others.

Masks OK for those already ill, not for those who are well. If they are being improperly used by well/healthy people it leaves the sick veulnerable...... It makes perfect sense to me.
Me too....but I don't think the message about masks is getting across.

My opinion only.

Good luck with that! I used to work as a photographer and had a contract with a chain of children’s day cares.
Always had at least one makeup day built into the schedule for each facility.
Never failed - too sick to come to day care for the day but they brought them for pictures. Fever/runny noses/pinkeye/stomach bug. I gave it up because I was always sick.
Plus the pictures showed a sick child and the parents complained it was my fault.

There are so many people who work in the United States, who do not get sick pay. Miss work for a few days, you could easily have problems paying bills. So many people live that "paycheck to paycheck" life.

A runny nose, cough, feeling a bit crappy, may as well go to work and be miserable, so you can pay rent and buy "luxury" items, like food.

That is the problem.

I had the exact same thought. And the threat of sepsis "and even death" (daduhdum!!!) is from your IV -- which is from being in the hospital in the first place.

NOOOOOOOOOOO

The mask discussion is exactly why we need a medical expert who is skilled at communicating clearly in a way that the general public understands. There should not be confusion about masks.

Wish we had such a national spokesperson.

jmo

Dr. Maria and Dr. Mike have talked about a lot masks their PCs.

I’m still very behind and trying to catch up on the posts.

If there is still confusion about this by the time I catch up then I’m going to need to go back and pull some references for you guys.

WHO:
When and how to use masks

A few snippets, see link:

When to use a mask

  • If you are healthy, you only need to wear a mask if you are taking care of a person with suspected 2019-nCoV infection.
  • Wear a mask if you are coughing or sneezing.
  • Masks are effective only when used in combination with frequent hand-cleaning with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
  • If you wear a mask, then you must know how to use it and dispose of it properly.

How to put on, use, take off and dispose of a mask

  • Before putting on a mask, clean hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
  • Cover mouth and nose with mask and make sure there are no gaps between your face and the mask.
  • Avoid touching the mask while using it; if you do, clean your hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
  • Replace the mask with a new one as soon as it is damp and do not re-use single-use masks.
  • To remove the mask: remove it from behind (do not touch the front of mask); discard immediately in a closed bin; clean hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.

I’ll also try to pull some quotes already posted from professionals later if the subject is still unclear after I catch up.

Interesting how quickly our society is changing. I was at several local stores today, every single one had copious amounts of hand sanitizer gels by the cashier, for the employees to use, and for patrons.

FAQ about PPE, etc:
Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

“This document offers guidance on how to optimize supplies of N95 filtering facepiece respirators (commonly called “N95 respirators”) in healthcare settings in the face of potential ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) transmission in the United States. The recommendations are intended for use by professionals who manage respiratory protection programs, occupational health services, and infection prevention programs in healthcare institutions to protect healthcare personnel (HCP) from job-related risks of exposure to infectious respiratory illnesses.”

I brought mine with me to the hospital. 5 days of heavy antibiotics and my own private room while they figured out what was causing it. I caught mine early, very early. Middle of the night I knew something was wrong and had temp to prove it. Even though it was Friday night of Labor Day weekend I didn’t try to wait it out. Quick trip to small Local ER earned me a trip to the big hospital. Staph infection (not MRSA) but no idea what caused it. Fun times, fun times...told I had beginning stages of sepsis and if I would have waited I wouldn’t have survived. When I came in based on my vitals I had 10% chance of not surviving.

Q: Does CDC recommend the use of facemask in the community to prevent COVID-19?

A: CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19. You should only wear a mask if a healthcare professional recommends it. A facemask should be used by people who have COVID-19 and are showing symptoms. This is to protect others from the risk of getting infected. The use of facemasks also is crucial for health workers and other people who are taking care of someone infected with COVID-19 in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).

“Singapore has not had the explosive spike in case numbers, possibly because of its aggressive contact tracing effort and legal authority to order people into quarantine. Feb 26, 93 confirmed cases; 2848 close contacts have been quarantined for 2 weeks.” Singapore claims first use of antibody test to track coronavirus infections | Science | AAAS
Antoine FLAHAULT on Twitter

In what appears to be a first, disease trackers in Singapore have used an experimental antibody test for COVID-19 to confirm that a suspected patient was infected with the coronavirus. The patient was one of two people who together formed a missing link between two clusters of cases that each occurred in a Singaporean church.

Researchers around the world are racing to develop antibody tests, also called serological tests, that can confirm whether someone was infected even after their immune system has cleared the virus that causes COVID-19. The group that developed the test, at Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore, is among the front-runners, although its assay has to be validated before it is taken into production and deployed widely.

Yes, iirc Doc T referred to their success and mentioned “disease mapping”.

I stocked up on tons of rubbing alcohol and mini spray bottles. (Travel size).

Frankly I’m usually pretty diligent about protecting against germs but I’m trying to be even more obsessive.
That’s what I bought too. Also peroxide.
