I have been seeing promos and ads for the Winter Olympics. They are in China!! This makes no sense to me. What's up with that?

I've just been alerted that my niece (39 years old) has been intubated and moved to ICU. She's hospitalized in Winston-Salem, NC.

That's too bad. In my city we all wear masks indoors. No one takes them off when inside or they will be asked to leave. I've said before on this thread that I guess I'm just lucky and my community is very compliant with the L.A. County wide mask mandate. I had a garage sale recently and most of the customers wore masks even though we were outdoors.
We are in a suburb about 45 minutes North of LA, and EVERYONE wears masks around here. I never see anyone without a mask when I go do errands.

Except the few times we went to see our granddaughter ride in her horse shows. We went to an equestrian park in Thousand Oaks---NO ONE else had masks on but us. I felt like an alien from outer space.

Meanwhile, my charming city does this:

Folly Beach businesses ‘excited’ for flip flop drop’s in person return

FOLLY BEACH (WCSC) – Business owners on Folly Beach say they are excited to welcome back a New Year’s tradition for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

The city’s flip flop drop will be held on New Year’s Eve along Center Street.

“We’re very excited to have that happen again,” Rita’s Seaside Grill Manager Tayler McBarron said.

Charlotte Goodwin, the brainchild of the event and the mayor’s wife, said the event has helped make Dec. 31 the busiest night the local businesses will have throughout the year.
Love that beach, but super spreader event.

But U.S. athletes will be participating, I believe.
Yes. I just read over 200 are competing. I don't understand why they are even having them. Those athletes are world wide. This is the reason this covid thing is a mess. So many mixed messages from those in charge. MOO

One thing my son said to me this evening was because he was vaccinated it meant even if he did get covid he wouldn't be hospitalized. That gave me something to hold onto.
I'm so sorry you and your family are going through this jakat. I'm glad that you son was vaccinated. I bet that will help a great deal.

Oh no. The dreaded question was she vaccinated? I'm sorry CG.
According to my sister (her mother) she did get the first two doses of Pfizer back in March but elected to skip the booster as, in my niece's opinion, the vaccines are ineffective. My niece is apparently one of several people infected at a Christmas Eve house party. My sister tested positive as well, but she's fine. My sister did not attend the party so it's likely my niece infected her. They live together.

Oh no, I'm so sorry. I hope that she improves soon. If she was exposed on 12/24, she seems to have had a rapid progression. Sending positive thoughts your way.

This is interesting, and I wonder what this will mean if delta remains the dominant variant if omicron burns itself out. Dr. Scott Gottlieb, the former director of the FDA, said last week that he thinks that delta might be the residual variant when we get to the endemic stage. (The interview with Dr. Gottlieb was posted a few days ago on this thread.) If delta does become the residual variant, I wonder if people who have antibodies against omicron will be protected against delta, and for how long. Lots still to learn over the next few months.
I think the idea is that Omicron may become the dominant strain and DELTA may burn itself out.
Omicron is much more contagious than Delta and also is believed to cause much milder symptoms according to studies in South Africa where it seemed to have originated. So if enough people catch Omicron (including the millions of unvaccinated people), herd immunity could be reached. It gives me some hope to believe this anyway. It would be wonderful if like could return to a more normal state.

We are not surprised, unfortunately, at this course of events. My niece has serious underlying conditions - BMI 44, poorly controlled diabetes, poorly controlled hypertension, she's a smoker and has problems with drugs and alcohol. We knew the outcome was likely not going to be good no matter what flavor of covid she eventually contracted. She's also not a fan of masks or social distancing.

The writing was on the wall, I guess you could say.
