Not to be Debbie Downer, but I see the economy being wrecked. Most people cannot go more than a fews day without income from their jobs. I sure hope I am WRONG.

But the whole point of the schools closure is to allow the staff and pupils time to self isolate and social distance themselves. It makes no sense whatsoever for those teachers to go off babysitting! Send them back to school if that's the case. And whilst the gesture is a kind one, America have been slow to declare a National Emergency and people reeaally need to fall into line now. X

well this is Canada but there would be a hell of a lot less kids in one home than in class

137 cases out of 209 million people doesn't sound all caps bold bad to me. jmo
Well it sure is all caps bold bad to 137 families. Not to mention that it marks a surge.

We ordered thousands of dollars of food for our restaurant yesterday. Normal type of order.
I did call my chef and ask her to really watch her ordering.
Last night "thursday" sales were $320.00.
We sell a lot of seafood at our restaurant. Tomorrow, I'm going in to inventory and place 85% of that beautiful fresh fish into a freezer.
Our monthly lease for our restaurant is $5,200.00. I've not sent them a dime yet for this month.
I'm not even sure WHAT I'm going to send them. I have to keep my employees paid, the lights on and my food vendors paid. No food, no electricity, no employees= bankruptcy.
We've been at this location for 17 years. I told my husband this morning. "What are they going to do? Throw us out? Then what? Find another experienced restaurant to take over? Give the new tenant, if they can find one, 4 months of free rent and $20,000.00 or more in build out costs"?
All of this just sucks.
We've been planning on selling our restaurant this summer. Hubby is 73 and had major open heart surgery 1 year ago this month.
He's working double shifts 6 days a week.
His doctor told him to slow down, that he's "fresh off the table."
Neither hubby or myself have ever seen anything like this in our lives.

BTW. I was in banking for many years. The only way you can get a Small Business Loan from the Small Business Administration (SBA) is if you don't NEED one.
It's always been a big joke in the banking industry.

We're pretty screwed.
Obviously I can’t “like” your post. I hope some creative marketing can turn things around. Maybe advertise “small, intimate dining.” Wish I could take some of that fresh fish off your hands.

Just trying to stick to facts. Where did you hear they "reached an agreement" - meaning that the House bill was approved, I'd assume? :)
If so, it still needs to be approved by the Senate...and they are dismissed until Monday.

Good luck Kali with your restaurant. I hope things go well for you. It sounds like a nice restaurant.

Thanks. My husband takes one of the listed ACE inhibitors..It's worrisome. But all his "drugs" keep him healthy.

I take Losartan and I decided to stay on it and only address it with my doctor if I get COVID-19, since that’s the time it puts you at a disadvantage. For me, that seems the most reasonable approach. I don’t want to add the stress of trying a new med right now if I don’t need to.

Canada, America, England wherever, the threat remains the same! And whilst it may be less kids, it is also having the contact with their parents who will be coming in from work having been contact with offices, shops, streets full of people. It's their call, but it's the wrong call IMO X

Right. And when did they start testing? And how many tests do they have? The results of these tests mean next to nothing, IMO.

I don't think the OP meant it was all caps bold bad just as to those families. And just for perspective, 1 to 2 is a 100% "surge."

Good night all. My computer is at 2 percent!!! I need help. Who do I call in the local government to complain about stuffing hundreds of folks in a courtroom for hours, knowing the trial was going to be delayed, knowing that this virus has been rapidly spreading?

TIA

This is so sad. Maybe you could sell it by the pound to locals? Meat and fish are hard to come by in grocery stores these days.

Yes, compared to 61K deaths annually from the flu in the US alone.
Burden of Influenza
Last year was 34K in the US according to the CDC, see above. Much higher than in most previous years.

That's a factor here - people are getting sicker, there are more co-infections. People are generally sicker this year, which makes any new disease all the more dangerous.

That said: 5K is the worldwide death toll so far in just a few months in an EXPONENTIALLY increasing disease (do the math - it's not x12) is so incredibly more deadly that I don't even want to give the figures -- but it's in the high millions for the US alone - as experts have said.

For anyone to say 'don't worry' - which of course you would not say - would be quite irresponsible at this point. I know you mean well - this is not directed at you.

a lot of people don't have a choice but to go to work until the gov't tells them to stay home and pays them
that's the brutal reality so they have to risk theirs and their children's lives to go to work
the streets are not full of people where I live because many are self-isolating

5k worldwide, while flu deaths in the us from October to March 7 are 22k to 55k in the US alone.

Wow, @KALI, I am so sorry. When you posted 2 weeks ago how freaked out you were by my post about not going out to eat..I felt very badly.

Everyone is being affected by this. Who could have seen this coming? This is America, stuff like this happens in Africa or China....right.

Just waiting to see what the next two weeks brings us...

Ugh. I'm so very, very sorry this is happening to you. I hope you can work it out.

And actually, no it isn't all caps bold bad even to those families. Most of the dx'd will have no, mild or moderate flu-like symptoms and recover.
