I haven't posted in forever, but..
So I am in quarantine. I am immunosuppressed and just got over pneumonia a couple weeks ago. A few days after that, I started coughing. It hasn't stopped. I've just been super tired in the evenings, but I haven't had a fever or anything until yesterday, when I got both fever and chills. My breathing is a little worse than usual, but nothing my inhaler can't handle.
After I got the fever, I did call my doctor and explain everything. I was told to quarantine for 14 days (let's be honest, it's likely going to be longer than that because I can't risk going out because of my health.) They gave me a number and said if my breathing gets worse, to call and schedule a test, but I likely won't be tested anyway because they are only testing people who have traveled or been in close contact with a confirmed case.
I highly doubt I have Covid anyway, we only have 2 (possibly 3) cases here on the Island, all of whom were diagnosed several days after my cough started, and I haven't left my house hardly, let alone traveled. Canada luckily has been one of the last places this thing has reached, so we weren't caught unawares, but they still aren't testing everyone they should. There are a lot of measures in place but we still have direct ferry routes multiple times a day from both Seattle and Vancouver, which are both hotbeds of the virus, not to mention an international airport. We're going to get hit, and hopefully the testing will be figured out soon.
Even with just those couple of confirmed cases, people here are going crazy. There is no toilet paper or paper towels or hand sanitizer to be found anywhere. I spent 8 hours yesterday trying to order groceries for delivery because the site kept going down (so lucky my husband woke up early at 530 and was able to grab the last slot for delivery tomorrow). There's a lot of panic. A good chunk of our economy is based on tourism, which normally starts up again right about now. No cruise ships (banned until 1 july), no gatherings over 250 people, mandatory 14 day quarantine for anyone who comes home after leaving the country (even to the US). The gov set up EI so people can get it with no wait period, but some people don't qualify. Also, a lot of small business owners around here who depend on the spring/ summer tourism season take out lines of credit to make it through the winter and then pay it off during the season, which they won't be able to now.
Anyways, if you've made it this far, this is just my personal experience here in my little corner of the world. Stay safe and wash your hands!
