I wish I could sleep it’s 7:47am here and I haven’t slept at all. I’m worried sick and stressed out my mind about this nightmare and my Mum’s surgery.

My mom is 87 and she successfully beat breast cancer for the second time in her life recently.

I'm worried that she will get this virus even if I manage to talk her into a self quarantine. If I go out and get supplies I could unwittingly bring the virus back home with me and cause her to get infected.

That is awesome to hear. Your mom is a bada$$ (hopefully that is okay to say here at this moment). Hopefully she will tone it down a little and stay in for a little! Much love to you and yours.

Because of the testing issue that you are talking about I'm curious to know how it is known that this corona virus has such a high mortality rate vs the flu when we don't even know how many people are infected.

If it's true that there are many people that are infected that have very mild or no symptoms that could make it hard to get a true idea of how deadly this virus is right? JMO

There have been medical studies of actual confirmed patients in hospitals. So the numbers for hospitals include actual cases that can be compared to actual diagnosed flu cases that end up hospitalised. So there are at least figures for how deadly it is for the more serious cases that end up in hospital. And as they are the ones most likely to die, the ones most likely to need oxygen or a ventilator in order to give them a better chance of not dying, I think we shouldn't forget that figure and worry too much at the moment about whether or not that fatality rate is higher or lower than anything else. It's this that we're dealing with *now*.

Estimates for how many people in the general population get the disease and whether or not they're even aware they have it will come later.

Oh yeah. There are a lot of things I can remotely. But evidentiary hearings and depositions I can’t.

I figured...sorry if it was dumb question lol...I just wanted to say I’m learning all about this conferencing stuff myself so was really wanting to say, for those who have to learn to be more “remote”, perhaps we can learn more about this stuff together.

So, for anyone who is doing “remote” stuff, I look forward to hearing what type of software, etc. you guys are using.

We can “adapt” together.

Because you know, that’s exactly what we needed as a society, more devices and less human interaction.

I’m laughing at myself thinking about how I used to complain and complain about kids being on their devices too much.

Asking, as I have an appointment this week and as I currently look like one of those doggies with eyes covered by floof, I am considering wearing a mask and keeping the appointment. Or not. Hmm.

SAME. It's 4:11am here and I have to be up for work at 8. I am WIRED. My mom was diagnosed with cancer this week and the surgery to remove half of her lung is scheduled for next week. She is about to be 76 and I'm just... weirdly disassociating yet completely anxiety ridden. Hugs to you and your mom.

I’m so sorry to hear this. I understand the disassociated anxiety. Wishing your Mum - and you - the very best.

I am new here so I don't want to say the wrong thing. I live in Northern California and we have had 1 positive that has since recovered and 1 new one tonight that is self isolating. I just don't know what to believe. Is this a real thing or is this a media driven panic of the month?

Doctors, virologists, and epidemiologists seem to be very serious about this. They don't want to encourage panic, they do seem to think people should take it seriously though.

There are real tragedies happening in areas in Italy, for instance, where they have a large outbreak. If we do not take it seriously, without panic, we risk that happening in more cities and countries in the world.

The other night I got an emergency alert on my phone. One of those loud ones like they do for Amber Alerts.

I jumped out of bed all foggy thinking it was something to do with CV.

It was a weather alert.

This has consumed me day and night to the point I can’t focus on anything else. Nothing.

For weeks I’ve read this thread while having my morning coffee. I find myself trembling as I’m reading this morning. It’s finally sinking in that it’s really happening.

I spoke to my father in law yesterday, he lives in Spain where he is having treatment for lung cancer. He is now on lockdown and may leave the house only to attend the doctor, hospital, garage for fuel and limited supermarket trips for supplies. He was told that from Sunday evening he will no longer be allowed to walk his dog.
My parents are visiting Australia, they arrived just hours before they introduced quarantining all arrivals.

I wish my family were not so spread out around the world at this time.

I’m so grateful for this thread, thank you to everyone that’s keeping it up to date. It allows me to follow what’s happening in one place.

I’m glad to have this community that educated me and is supporting me. But I’m also scared each time I read here. It feels like our world changed in such a scary way.

When I walked my sweet dog tonight she regressed hard into anxiety and refused to go along the Main Street. She just stopped and wouldn’t come. I asked, “go home, snacker?” And she immediately began pulling toward the house.

She looked anxious. She’s feeling me I think. And I wasn’t even feeling adrenaline or anything. But it’s not just me. It’s in the air.

I had to bring her home and continue on without her.

I recall a part of this beautiful, uplifting documentary (that is available on Netflix and which everyone here should see to get a lift of spirit) called I Am. It was about how the earth breathes or has rhythms that show when something major like super mass disaster happens and you can see this sort of negative sigh. I don’t recall the specifics. But trust me, it may sound esoteric but I’m very analytical and it made sense to me at the time.

Anyhow, whatever that measure was I think it will show a negative biorhythm or whatever it’s called, in this period.

I REALLY want to know.
What is going on in China?
How many are still quarantined?
How many out of quarantine?
I cannot believe that in this day and age, we still have radio silence from a country with billions of citizens.
I'm going to make a prediction, because of their leader's cloak and dagger behavior, China is going to experience the worst lack of tourism in over 100 years.
Which in my opinion they should.

I'm still catching up with posts from pages and pages ago. IMO - I think both China and our government had and are having the same conundrum - releasing numbers will reflect on current administrations or at least thats what both administrations seem to think. For example, with ours, the current administration in the past few days has published numbers of long past illnesses to directly say something about that administration. Not even going to start to go into the numbers being accurate or not. It's all static. Both China and our government should release actual numbers. For us, we need to start mass testing first though.

She sounds like a super cool person and a warrior.

She is that. And I want to keep her around as long as possible.

I have a feeling from our discussions about this virus that she will not self quarantine. She likes her independence too much.

Between the way she has been taking precautions and her view on the severity of this virus she will probably do as she wishes.

When I'm at work I have zero control/input on what she does so either I quite my job and stay at home with her or keep working and see what happens.

The post you quoted said *when* that comes, not that it already has.

Let's hope that the measures currently being taken will prevent hospitals in other parts of the world looking like those in northern Italy. I personally think there's a significant chance that what's happening in Northern Italy is a high risk for a lot of other regions in the world... I don't want it to happen, but I do fear that it might/will. I think the reasons for the measures being taken now in a lot of places are because the people 'in charge' are also worried about that and want to do whatever they can to avoid that outcome.

But it does seem to be a very serious disease in that it does definitely have the potential to cause what's happening in Northern Italy to happen in many more places around the world.

It's not Ebola, it's not going to kill fifty percent of people who contract it. But maybe it is something like the Spanish Flu, and we have technology that wasn't available back then, we have much better healthcare systems in many parts of the world than back then. But if the influx of patients at one time gets too high, then we won't be able to do much better for the seriously and critically ill patients than they could.

Virus isolation for over-70s 'within weeks'

Action to isolate the UK's over-70s for an extended period to shield them from coronavirus is planned in the coming weeks, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has confirmed.

He said the measure "is a very big ask of the elderly and vulnerable, but it is for their own protection".

The government has faced pressure to do more to tackle the epidemic after the UK death toll rose to 21 on Saturday.
