Kali - I suggest that you take a peek at Tricia's post about the rules in this thread. The subject of downplaying peoples concerns and discrediting information is touched upon.
@Amonet also has a wonderful post a page or so back. My personal opinion is: if you think a person is panicking, is the appropriate response "calm down"? That never works. Not in my experience at least.
Anyway, this is just a general rant and not to anyone in particular - I have been seeing so many people are having a really difficult time wrapping their head around what is going on. Instead of preparing or taking precautions, some dig their heels in and practically deny there is a global pandemic happing right now. Understandable - none of us have had to deal with this before. As someone mentioned a few posts ago, it also makes my BP rise. Comparing this to the flu doesn't make sense. It's not the flu.
I live in NYC and I took a walk earlier. Currently, businesses are only allowed to fill to 50% capacity. I walked past numerous bars that were PACKED. There were/are people acting like this is party time. I don't get it.
Boiling it down: It's winter and your child has a wet head. Not all kids get sick but do you send them out without a jacket or hat? You don't want to take that chance, you take precautions because you don't want them to get sick. If kids in your child's class are coughing and some are currently known to be sick, do you wish their parents kept them home? What if the parent of the sick child brushed you off and told you that your child will be fine, don't panic. If your child gets the flu and has a fever - would you send him to school knowing they might infect one or more of the other kids?
Personally, I don't think taking precautions is panic. Preparing for something that ultimately may have a better outcome than what you prepared for is pretty smart IMO. I was also living in NYC during 9/11. Afterwards, we were all told to make "go bags" in the case that something like that were to happen again. We still get reminders that having a "go bag" is a good idea for anything that might pop up - just in case. Is that panicking? IMO, I don't think so. It's pretty smart if you ask me.
Funny thing about media and the thought that media is pushing panic: I see panic coming from the media that is accusing others of pushing panic. Weird how that works.
