Well, I've been thwarted by Kroger supermarket. :( Last Friday I wrote about going shopping at 2AM and how nice it was because there were almost no customers in the store.

But Kroger decided they will now close at 10PM and reopen at 6AM. So no doubt there will now be long lines, mass confusion and crowded customers standing cheek to jowl.

"Curses! Foiled again!", as Snidely Whiplash would say. o_O

“Health departments in the United States on Monday reported the largest number of coronavirus-related deaths on any one day since the onset of the outbreak. As of Monday evening, officials had reported 18 people dead, bringing the nationwide total to 85, according to a Washington Post tally.

President Trump in a Monday news conference recommended that states with evidence of community transmission of the virus should close schools, as well as bars, restaurants, gyms and other gathering spots.

BBM:

“It isn’t an overreaction,” Anthony S. Fauci, a leading member of the president’s coronavirus task force, said of the recommendations released Monday.”

[...]

BBM / Doc T quote:

We have not seen an urgent enough escalation in testing, isolation and contact tracing, which is the backbone of the response,” the director general of the World Health Organization said at a news conference.

“The leaders of six San Francisco Bay area counties, among the hardest hit by the widening coronavirus outbreak, called on more than 6 million California residents Monday to stay at home for weeks unless faced with an emergency.

The move, among the strictest steps taken nationally to isolate individuals from exposure to the virus, will be enforced by local sheriff’s offices and police departments, though authorities said they would tread lightly at the outset as people become accustomed to remaining in and around their homes. Authorities referred to it as a remain-in-place order, something more commonly associated with earthquakes and mass shootings, although people will be allowed to leave home for groceries, to walk their dogs and to carry out other routine activities.

The directive is scheduled to take effect overnight and remain in place until at least April 7, and it covers six of the nine counties comprising the Bay Area, including Santa Clara County in the center of Silicon Valley, which has the most reported infections of any of the state’s 58 counties. The county has reported nearly 140 cases of infection and two deaths.”

Now's a good time to say a prayer for all the first responders who will still do their daily work of protecting us and saving lives, and who may have a harder time with a whole bunch of confused, stressed people and kids on the loose or trapped in bad homes.

Got this from the National Domestic Violence Hotline. I was wondering how they are responding, so I'm glad this came in my email.

"We are hearing from survivors on how COVID-19 is already being used by abusive partners to further control and abuse. This includes circumstances where survivors are forced to stay in the home or in proximity to their abuser. Our advocates are able to provide critical safety planning and resources for instances such as this.

Our primary goal is to continue to support survivors while keeping our staff safe. To do just that, we are preparing to deploy remote advocate staff to augment our on-site contact center operations.

We remain dedicated to our mission — thank you for your support. Please stay healthy and safe. For victims and survivors needing support, they should call 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or select the Chat Now button on thehotline.org."

Will the cruise lines be able to recover ??? I love cruising.

Coronavirus Hits More Cruise Ships, Leaving Vessels Stuck at Sea

I doubt it, sadly, not all of them anyway. People won’t forget about the literal cabin fever that thousands have suffered recently and bookings will fall.

Having said that I’m sure the bigger lines will carry on sailing and no doubt there’ll be some good deals to be found for dedicated cruisers like my in-laws. They’re due to go on one in 6 weeks time which will probably be cancelled, they do 2 or 3 a year mainly around Europe.

Shopping malls are already having problems with online competition. I wonder if this virus is going to give them their death sentence.
