Hopefully they will work that out. So many children from low-income families rely on school meals, so it's important that the school system finds safe ways to continue providing them.

I hope those who hand them out have safety equipment. It's not like a hurricane where hand to hand contact is okay.

Amazon prime let me put toilet paper into the basket. But when I tried to check out they don't have delivery time available.
I should sue them for intentional infliction of emotional distress. LOL.
I looked Grainger's web site yesterday. All TP back ordered till Aug. 4th.

Implode the VA. It would be cheaper to give veterans a card like "VetCare", and let them get services in their own community. especially since they will not support the mission of supporting civilian hospitals in time of crisis.
I agree, implode them. I work in an outpatient healthcare facility offering a wide variety of services. The VA will no longer give authorization to our local community vets to have services local to them. Want them to travel an hour plus to use their own facilities or their preferred facilities. Many are older and of course they are sick and have trouble walking, getting rides etc. Shame on them!

Will everyone line up 6 feet away from each other, even when the number of meals gets low?
I am in CT and I heard today they are looking at the drive up type of service. No one should have to get out and get in a line. Hopefully they follow thru!

“Dow sees worst point loss since 1987
The Dow recorded its worst one-day point drop in history and its worst performance on a percentage basis since October of 1987, also known as "Black Monday."

I assumed the change might be because the VA expects a heavy case load by the veterans frequently treated at their facilities, as a backup resource for local civilian hospitals or to treat active duty patients as some bases do not have hospitals on base.

Are you in the city of West, TX, or the West TX region? I used to live in Far West Tx, tiny town of Marfa.

OT—I love west TX. We passed through there a couple of times during our RVing days. We fell in love with an RV park in Alpine.

Praying for all first responders. My brother-in-law is a flight paramedic. Today he responded to a recently confirmed COVID-19 patient who'd become critical. :(
Heartbreaking to hear.

Why does South Korea have so few coronavirus deaths while Italy has so many (opinion) - CNN
Updated 9:49 PM ET, Mon March 16, 2020

“In South Korea, the rate of testing has been quite high (3,692 tests per million people as of March 8), and its mortality among those infected quite low (about 0.6%, or 66 deaths, at last count).

By contrast, Italy tests about 826 people per million and its mortality among those with diagnosed infection is about 10 times higher, with more than 1,000 people dead from the disease.

Furthermore, stories abound of sick people in the US showing up at doctors' offices and hospital ERs, asking to be tested yet being sent away because no test is available or because they don't fit the testing criteria -- leading many to comment that the lack of testing is going to kill us all.”

I thought they decided to give up on containment?

They said they've moved from containment to delay, but that there still might be aspects of the containment that would follow over into the delay segment.

They do appear to have stopped giving tests to anyone who isn't hospitalised. But they said today that anyone who's experiencing symptoms, like cough and fever, to stay home *and* for everyone in the house to stay home as well.

There's too much spread now for containment to be viable at this time. I don't think containment would be viable again until the number of community cases drops the other side of the peak, and until new testing comes out with faster test results, serology testing for antibodies, and enough medical staff and labs to have space/time to do all these tests. For now it seems they're going to focus on attempting to treat whatever cases do end up in hospital and reducing spread in the community with social isolation measures.

FILE PHOTO: Cemetery workers and funeral agency workers in protective masks transport a coffin of a person who died from coronavirus disease (COVID-19), into a cemetery in Bergamo, Italy March 16, 2020.

“As the COVID-19 epidemic expands and the disease progresses, these beds are in increasing demand, especially because of the breathing problems the illness can bring. Every time a bed comes free, two anaesthesiologists consult with a specialist in resuscitation and an internal medicine physician to decide who will occupy it.

Age and pre-existing medical conditions are important factors. So is having a family.

"We have to take into account whether older patients have families who can take care of them once they leave the ICU, because they will need help," says Marco Resta, deputy head of Policlinico San Donato's Intensive Care Unit.

Even if there is no chance, he says, you have to "look a patient in the face and say, 'All is well.' And this lie destroys you."

The most devastating medical crisis in Italy since World War Two is forcing doctors, patients and their families to make decisions that Resta, a former military doctor, said he has not experienced even in war. As of Monday, 2,158 people had died and 27,980 been infected by coronavirus in Italy – the second highest number of reported cases and deaths in the world behind China.

Resta says that 50% of those with COVID-19 who are accepted into intensive care units in Italy are dying, compared with a usual mortality rate of 12% to 16% in such units nationwide.“

Shopping malls are already having problems with online competition. I wonder if this virus is going to give them their death sentence.
Sadly it wouldn't be surprising IMO. The nearest mall to me is about 40 minutes away and the last time I was there I saw that a few more stores had gone dark, including a department store that had served as an anchor store for many years. The food court is now almost half that of last year.

I hope it doesn't happen as sometimes I can find clothes on sale that aren't available online and it's nice to be able to try stuff on. Plus I enjoy the ambiance of being out in public.

I feel like we as a society has been slowly moving to self isolation for a while now, substituting NetFlix for movie theaters and lately home delivery for groceries. Almost any business can now be conducted by phone or web site. Heck, my bank is in Miami and I have no problem here in WA.

Thank goodness that most of the mom and pop stores in my little town are surviving due to heavy advertising to buy local and the tourist trade. I like that most merchants know me by name and I theirs. If that goes away due to the virus we'll become another ghost town.

Speaking of the Olympics, I don’t think many countries (USA included) will be sending athletes to Japan if this virus continues over the summer.

You'd have to have the entire team, including coaches and support staff, isolated for about a month or two before sending them. Then they'd have to fly out....at a time when so many countries have their borders closed down and airplanes are basically parked and staff laid off.

I think it would be very difficult even to run the Olympics without in-stadium audiences.

Hong Kong is stoic, Italy laughs: what coronavirus tour taught me

“As fate would have it, in the past month I have travelled to Italy as the
coronavirus was accelerating from nuisance to epidemic; Hong Kong, where the virus has been held in check; Malaysia, where numbers were less stable than appearances suggested; and the UAE, still in the early stages of the virus.

Reflecting on these experiences, my impression is that the public in these countries is at various stages of a journey from annoyance to denial to shock and acceptance. After my snapshot visits I believe this is a time for compliance and not for scepticism, a time to assert the rights of the group rather than those of the individual.”

I’ve missed pages here. Will catch up soon. I went out today to try to get some last minute provisions. I know they are saying grocers will stay open but I don’t have 100% confidence in that. I worry that some of the smaller ones will close and it will create a constant swarm at the ones that stay open.

It was absolutely awful being out at the store. I hate to be dramatic, but it felt apocalyptic. And I loathed being in the crowds.

Whole thing is definitely effecting me emotionally.

Truly, despite how much we all have been saying this would happen, I’m still thinking I will wake up and this isn’t actually happening.

Lockdown at midnight for me here. T-minus 4 hours and 16 minutes. Crikey.

I read that drive by tests have been implemented in Ontario - drive by apparently helps protect those who do the testing. Wasn't it South Korea that first introduced the idea?
