Question on the John Hopkins ticker. I'm unable to find the answer. It has confirmed cases, deaths, recovered. Is confirmed cases actually active cases? Or does it include recovered?

Confirmed cases is the grand total that includes recoveries, deaths, and active cases.

Who knew a crime site I joined years ago to follow the Morgan Harrington case would end up so important during a time like this!

Wait whut, this is a crime site??

(feel terrible for neglecting my cases)

Thanks Zeacats. I remember you posting the underlying health problems but I have slept since then and had forgotten.
No worries. I'm not remembering much past the last 5 minutes myself. I actually left my cat out on the screened porch this morning (I had closed the door because it was chilly inside). Even when I heard her crying, it took me a moment to figure it out. Sigh....

I have put in a stock of freeze-dried ice cream.

Ooohh... great idea. I hadn't even thought of that nor any other "astronaut foods"... hmmm... I wonder if these are still available?!

Can anyone answer this?
Was it ever addresses hoW the problem of shortage of ICU space, workers and Ventilators
is being handled?
This is the BIGGEST problem not yet solved,
besides testing.

I didn’t sleep well at all last night. I’m sure it’s a common struggle right now.

I just want to thank all of you for the support shared, and the foresight WAY at the beginning of this mess that helped me to prepare by getting food, toilet paper, hand sanitizer, etc stocked up several weeks ago.

Being out at the store yesterday drove home how grateful I am that I DO have paper goods and other things stashed in a corner of my garage.

Who knew a crime site I joined years ago to follow the Morgan Harrington case would end up so important during a time like this!

Oh yes. A hearty THANK YOU to all you who weeks ago were making recommendations about putting in supplies.

Thanks to you I have adequate supplies of paper goods, canned goods, soups, spices, juices, drinks, personal protective equpiment, cat litter and food. Got rx's renewed early. Got a stock of OTC medications and cold relievers. Missed out on the hand sanitizer, but I wash hands like a fiend.

Yes, I joined WS because of the McStay disappearances.... then the discovery of the bodies....... the arrest...... the trial.

I was impressed then and I'm impressed now about the quality of people that post here!

After the mail delivery person leaves, I
  • pump my hands,
  • open the envelopes, toss them in a bag in recycling box,
  • then pump my hands again and bring the contents from the envelopes into the house.

I really like my mail delivery person - but he touches every mailbox, door knob, etc. with his gloves.

This may not be high on the list of preventative measures, but I do this as a precaution. Only takes a few seconds and perhaps I'm keeping the virus out of my house. Maybe even just keeping the cold virus away.

Just my opinion (and my weird way of opening the mail!)

I have found that I get a great workout moving my workout equipment out of the way all the time. :)

I just ran out of coffee creamer!!! I may have to give up coffee.

My parents used to put Pet Milk (evaporated milk) in their coffee. I didn't care for the sweetness of evaporated milk, so when I started drinking coffee (8th grade), I just put a little milk in it. Definitely no sugar. By the time I was in college, I drank coffee black. When we're on our cruises, I treat myself to a gourmet coffee card so I can have fresh brewed coffee, iced coffee, and an occasional "skinny" cappuccino with fat-free or almond milk. The coffee that is served in the main dining venues is not freshly brewed; it's made from syrup concentrate and tastes like mud.

Honest question - if GLOBALLY the cases are 190,000, why would predictions be in the millions for just the US alone? Is testing the problem? China under-reporting?

IMO. If you look at the numbers in Italy, and Europe, the numbers in China make no sense. I think our Govt. Knows that. Hence the higher numbers for us.

St Patrick’s Day in Dublin: ‘We didn’t think it would be as bad as this’
Ireland’s capital has never seen a St Patrick’s Day shutdown like it
[...]
Many groups of tourists were wandering around like motherless foals scarcely believing that things had got so bad that even the Irish were shutting the pubs on St Patrick’s Day of all days.
[...]
“We knew that the parade was off, but we didn’t know you couldn’t get a pint of Guinness...”

St Patrick’s Day in Dublin: ‘We didn’t think it would be as bad as this’

Groups of people wandering around is exactly what's contributing to the spread.

Amazon - to handle their increased demand they are halting what they call FBA or Fulfilled by Amazon. Essentially that is many small business owners who send amazon items to fulfill for customers. This is a good thing for many needing the essentials and ordering them here. But also an example of more business hurting or will be hurting financially. The call to hire a 100k tells me how big the demand is right now. Also the reason for the halt on FBA. MOO
Amazon suspends all warehouse shipments except medical supplies and ‘high-demand’ products

I forgot my dog was out in our fenced yard for quite a while too! Finally remembered as I was passing by the back door on my way to do a load of wash. I guess I'll finally get caught up on the laundry now that I'm being forced to WFH for the rest of the month! :p

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe temporarily released from Iranian jail
The British-Iranian aid worker Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe is among thousands of prisoners temporarily released from prison in Iran because of the coronavirus outbreak, her husband has said.

The British foreign secretary, Dominic Raab, said:

I am relieved that Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe was today temporarily released into the care of her family in Iran. We urge the regime to ensure she receives any necessary medical care. While this is a welcome step, we urge the government now to release all UK dual nationals arbitrarily detained in Iran, and enable them to return to their families in the UK.

NEW: Here's a picture of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe who has been released from prison in Iran for two weeks. Note the ankle tag - she is required to wear this and her movements are restricted to 300m from her parents’ home.

This is the BIGGEST problem not yet solved,
besides testing.

I think organizations like the American Hospital Association, WHO, and professional associations like the American Collge of ER Physicians, the American Medical Association, the Critical Care professional organizations are banding together with CDC to come up with individual facility plans.

But I honestly don't think there is any federal control over this. There is no national stockpile of ventilators that are distributed according to hospital bed size or anything like that.

Unlike China, or even UK or Italy, our patchwork healthcare system's flaws are going to cause real inequities in treatment. Just like we've seen real inequities in the way State Governors are handling this pandemic
