Alternatively, with stronger social distancing, the epidemic could be brought under control and effectively "suppressed". However, stopping this level of social distancing would result in a fairly rapid rebound as the population would still lack immunity to the virus. 5/19 Trevor Bedford on Twitter

My comment....he goes on to say that massive testing, isolation, and follow up is required....like South Korea.

Clipped from last thread, from otto....

"Death rate expected to go down? Is the idea that more testing means more people will receive health care all at the same time so the more people will survive?"

There will be a spike in cases as the newly implemented testing rolls out in the U.S. This is simply because there will be a dramatic increase in testing, resulting in a significant increase in data showing a more accurate picture of the number of infected. The more cases that test positive for Covid-19, the greater the denominator in the mathematical equation....meaning, number of deaths, divided by, number of cases testing positive.

Hence, the death rate will begin to approach a more accurate number, but will never achieve total accuracy, as there are an unknown number of cases of infection that never get tested, or treated, due to mild symptoms.

The reason I'm trying to put this out there is, it may appear for the next week or so, that the numbers of infected are skyrocketing in certain areas of the U.S., when in reality, it is the accuracy of the testing that is giving a more true picture (more accurate data) of the number of infected cases.

Africa should 'prepare for the worst' with virus, WHO says
''South Africa's health minister, Zweli Mkhize, this week called that kind of rate “explosive” in the country with the most cases in sub-Saharan Africa. Fourteen of the latest cases were from local transmission - and six were in children under 10.

Though the pandemic is in its early days on the continent, health experts have warned that even facilities in Africa's richest nation could be overwhelmed by the virus' spread.

“I think Africa should wake up. My continent should wake up,” said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who comes from Ethiopia.''

Crowded conditions in poor areas could lead to even faster transmission, experts say. Countless South Africans continue to pack into commuter trains and minivan taxis. But the annual pilgrimage of the Zion Christian Church, which attracts about 3 million people, was cancelled.

“We have low-income workers who cannot afford to self-isolate or take time off work,” said public health expert Dr. Atiya Mosam, who also worried about the large population without clean water or sanitation or vulnerable from HIV or tuberculosis.''

''Also Wednesday, sub-Saharan Africa saw its second death from COVID-19, in Burkina Faso, which has one of the continent's highest number of cases but has not imposed measures such as closing borders or banning religious services. Sudan previously reported a death.

In Kenya, police said a man accused of having the coronavirus was beaten to death

Others asked how a person can self-quarantine in a crowded slum. The continent has several of the world's fastest-growing cities.''

PM to speak again today after announcing COVID-19 package, U.S. border restrictions

Justin Trudeau, who is still in self-isolation after his wife tested positive for the illness caused by the novel coronavirus, is scheduled to speak outside his home at 11 a.m. ET.

Trudeau on Wednesday also announced a joint deal with the U.S. to close the border to non-essential travel, a move meant to clamp down on COVID-19 while still allow the flow of critical supplies between the two countries.

I can’t get the NJ family of 7 out of my head. 19 other family members might be positive. Astounding.

HANOI, March 19 (Reuters) - Vietnam's capital, Hanoi, has advised its residents to self-isolate at home until at least the end of March, after Vietnam recorded the biggest daily increase of the coronavirus, the city's ruling body said on Thursday.

For the rest of my life I will have totally different behavior if I’m in public, which I’ll probably continue to avoid as much as possible. I suddenly find I’m not so interested in travel, hotel rooms, public restrooms, restaurants, malls, airports, etc., the list is non ending. I’m ultra paranoid this will go away, only to re-emerge, or a new strain will soon follow. Is this our “new life”?

How does massive testing, isolation, and follow up give people immunity?
