MSM keeps reporting that they are using income.

I should have clarified what I said better. I wasn't referring to income when I mentioned IRS. I meant what data will be used to determine how many recipients in each household.

Off market use of drugs is already allowed. We don't need Trump for that.
"But you probably shouldn't call the medical board. The practice, called "off-label" prescribing, is entirely legal and very common. More than one in five outpatient prescriptions written in the U.S. are for off-label therapies."

I don't think that anyone in the United States thought that it would get here. And if it did, it would be a few isolated cases.

We never worried about SARS. And it never came here. Singapore was on top of SARS, so it makes sense that they were ready.

Actually, lots of us thought it would get here and were saying so publicly and often.

I don't know how many emails I wrote before my employers even held a meeting to consider what to do. In fact, many other schools had closed and my employers were actually quoting Trump as late as March 13.

Within the education, medical and nursing communities, there was tons of talk and attempts to get ready. My students were aware of social distancing by mid-February and were giving reports on local stores and availability of masks, food, toilet paper, etc. On March 10, students reported drops in supply at Costco which we used as a barometer for local readiness. Students from military families were 4X as likely to have gone to Costco to stock up, so obviously, the military knew as well, probably because local bases were being prepped to be used as quarantine centers for returning cruise passengers. Cruise ships knew by mid-February as well, because they were contacted by many experts from around the world.

It was predicted to be pandemic by mid-February, but even as late as yesterday, it's obvious that many people weren't believing it.

Students, by the way, needed to be educated on what words like "asymptomatic" and "transmissible" mean. When the main fact they were hearing on SM was "Young people aren't getting it" or "Young people don't die," it was like giving them a license to party. For some of them.

Those young people already in nursing or other health related programs were way on top of what was happening and way more prepared (as were all our student teachers).

For those of us who can't saw (like myself). Get those bandanas and scarfs out!
"HCP use of homemade masks:
In settings where facemasks are not available, HCP might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered PPE, since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face."

Morning friends, Florida has 112 new cases.
"TALLAHASSEE — Florida leaders reported the biggest surge in coronavirus cases yet Wednesday, and an eighth death, even as Gov. Ron DeSantis asserted that the state is not testing enough people to know how widespread the disease is."

Florida reports 112 new coronavirus cases as governor laments lack of testing
Maybe a first step would have been to close the beaches earlier to all the spring breakers. Terrible judgment, imo.

BBM. I was informed yesterday that an older sister is being sent home to die from a lung tumor and brain cancer. It will happen within a week. I can't fly to her. And there most likely will not be a funeral because of social distancing. We might all do a video chat if she is well enough for it.

There is nothing like bad news to make you realise how lucky you are. No matter how sucky you think you have it.

I'm so very, very sorry to hear this.

Keeping Your Sister, You and Your Family in my thoughts and prayers.

Well, people in the US government, and outside it, have known very well for quite some time that it, or something like it, *could* certainly get here, and potentially kill lots of Americans:

Before Trump’s inauguration, a warning: ‘The worst influenza pandemic since 1918’

And we did indeed worry a great deal about SARS, & there were cases here:

Oh, so sorry to hear this, SuziQ. {{{Hugs}}}

I hope your family will get to have reunion services in the near future. Hang in there. We can't social distance forever.

NJ

Murphy made the elections announcement as the state's death toll rose to nine and the number of positive cases increased nearly 75% in one day, to 742. And Murphy expects positive results of the disease associated with the coronavirus, COVID-19, to go into the "many thousands."

In an effort to limit the potential for further increases, Murphy took the rare steps of abruptly altering election plans. He signed an executive order Thursday to delay local voting to May 12, the same day of municipal elections. Towns from Atlantic City to West Amwell had elections scheduled this month, and school elections all around the state had been planned for April.

I'm surprised my Hairstylist is still open. He and his Husband have a huge business. Hair salon, full service spa, home and clothing items all within a former Masonic Temple. I have an appt. Tuesday. I have a feeling it will be shut down by then. He has a strict policy that if someone else touches your hair "Then you and I are in for a bad breakup" I doubt that has changed. He has a closed Clientele and a long waiting list. So I guess I will have to look like a troll for a bit :D Small price to pay. At this point my Cities cases are travel related but I see many just listed as pending. Not worth it. Sorry Thomas and James I luv you both but........

TAP WATER

As shoppers continue to clear shelves of bottled water, health officials and water providers are reminding the public that the risk of contracting coronavirus by using tap water is extremely low.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and the Environmental Protection Agency say conventional water treatment should remove coronavirus from municipal drinking water systems.

Coronavirus is particularly susceptible to disinfection and standard treatment, according to the EPA.

"As long as the treatment facilities work, I will be drinking tap water," said Dan Van Abs, a water supply expert at Rutgers University and a longtime member of the New Jersey Clean Water Council.

I'm almost positive they will use income tax data. That provides household income, members of the household, ages, etc. The IRS is the agency which will distribute the payments.

If I have milk, juice or large jars, I put them all in the sink and spray lightly with disinfectant of choice, I let them sit and bring in a few more bags, then rinse the sink stuff with sprayer, for cans and packaged stuff I use a wet cloth with dish soap. I wipe off the lids ALWAYS, prior to opening. This process is routine to me, I grew up with a grandma & mom preaching noting goes in fridge or pantry unless clean.

I have not been as meticulous as you, but grew up with similar rules. I've been thinking about this recently, and I wonder how much is related to the 1918 pandemic.

My mother's mother was Queen of Ironing. She ironed everything, sheets, underwear, socks ~ even the occasional grilled cheese sandwich, (wrap it in foil, iron both sides!) When asked, she would say 'for hygienic reasons'. She would get upset if you pressed her on it.

I suspect it was related to the fear of germs from 1918. Think of the news briefs we get. People in 1918 didn't have that, there were no news broadcasts. They had daily, perhaps twice daily in cities, newspapers. They were on their own far more than we are. I have great respect for past generations.

The Minnesota Department of Health says they think coronavirus community spread is happening throughout the state.

Off market use for drugs already approved for something else has always been allowed as far as I can tell.

I just hope that medical experts weigh in - some doctors will prescribe almost anything that a patient asks for. That isn't going to help the situation, if a particular drug actually doesn't work or only works anecdotally or marginally.

80% of people with CoVid19 will recover and many will never know they had it. A person with a common cold who has not been tested will end up with some of these special (and increasingly unavailable) medicines. Without actual scientific study published yet (the tertiary care people are doing their best to publish quickly, but I would not want to get out ahead of the research unless I had 1) had CoVid19 and 2) had serious symptoms.
