President Trump has said he is considering an executive order to free elderly "totally nonviolent" federal prisoners to help fight the spread of coronavirus. President Trump says he is considering an executive order freeing elderly nonviolent federal prisoners

CNN on Twitter

This is a somewhat cynical strategy, because that means the federal government won't have to pay for their care under the prison system, they will have to enroll in Medicare, if applicable, and then stay well during the enrollment period. Which also means they likely won't be able to afford Part B so only inpatient care would be paid, not doctor;s bills, labs, xrays, therapy, etc.

It's a kind of nasty cost-shifting

Has USA joined the Solidarity Trial yet?

Dr. Tedros / Wed. March 18th:

“We commend the researchers around the world who have come together to systemically evaluate experimental therapeutics.

Multiple small trials with different methodologies may not give us the clear, strong evidence we need about which treatments help to save lives.

WHO and its partners are therefore organizing a study in many countries in which some of these untested treatments are compared with each other.

This large, international study is designed to generate the robust data we need, to show which treatments are the most effective.

We have called this study the SOLIDARITY trial.

The SOLIDARITY trial provides simplified procedures to enable even hospitals that have been overloaded to participate.

Many countries have already confirmed that they will join the SOLIDARITY trial - Argentina, Bahrain, Canada, France, Iran, Norway, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland and Thailand - and I trust many more will join.”

Not in NYC. No way. No how.

Gov Cuomo:

Has to be a balance or parallel tracks that talks about economic viability

Have to plan the pivot back to economic functionality - U can't stop the economy forever

Does everyone have to stay out of work?

Should young people go back to work sooner?

Can we test for those who had the virus, resolved and are now immune & can they go back to work?

Theory of Risk Stratification (Yale U, Dr. Katz working on) - Theory says, isolate t vulnerable people; Don't isolate everyone. If isolate everyone, may b actually exposing t more vulnerable

How do you begin to restart the economic engine?

We implemented NY PAUSE

We must plan NY FORWARD

I did not watch, but from your notes it looks like they have given up and are preparing to move forward with herd immunity of younger folks. A very dangerous stance as many here perhaps would agree.

Question for folks as I haven't been following every post lately. Has anyone come out with a reason that Germany has such a low death rate? @Henry2326 ? Others?

Speculation: someone in another thread suggested many of these earlier cases in Germany were contracted while traveling, including ski vacations, and brought back and therefore are in a younger population overall compared to the infected population in Spain. I'm guessing soon the numbers for Germany will reflect more community acquired cases?

I'm going to attempt to search the threads, but for any of you who may have bookmarked it or have a fabulous tracking system (or memory) -- somewhere in the last week or so there was a post about some source claiming that six feet is not enough distance and that if someone sneezes or coughs the virus can move more like twenty feet.

Anyone have that link or remember anything about where that claim came from? TIA

SOUTH CAROLINA....what does it matter....you let 2,000 people off the boat with NO screening...just saying

Crew members who remained onboard Carnival’s Sunshine after it dropped
off its last passengers in Charleston will stay on the docked ship through at least the end of this month.
All aboard for crew of idled Charleston-based cruise ship

The Post and Courier on Twitter

South Korea would have tested them all and then done a mandatory quarantine of the positives, with a careful monitoring of their fellow passenger contacts.

That's how South Korea stopped this plague.

South Carolina is just mucking about in the filthy swamp and it is their healthcare providers and their at-risk citizens who will suffer.
Health officials in Nigeria have issued a warning over the drug chloroquine. Three people in the country overdosed on the drug, they said, in the wake of President Trump's comments about using it to treat coronavirus. KNOWLEDGE IS INDEED, Power, @Henry2326, but little or sham knowledge is a very dangerous thing.

I want to tell you Henry how much I appreciate all you do for all of us during this terrifying time, and everyone who continues to update.

I haven't posted much, but I read this forum each, and every day. I was following it constantly then I realized I had to take breaks for it's emotionally draining.

Our area is in one hot mess. Phoebe Putney Hospital with the main hospital in Dougherty county is the only area hospital here. Through the years they have bought up all of the smaller hospitals in all surrounding areas. It has left them with a monopoly.

This hospital is rated very low...not only statewide, but nationwide as well. The federal, and state government have withheld funds, and fined them in the past few years demanding they improve their quality of care yet they continue to give unacceptable care. They have no incentive to be better as long as they monopolize the southwest Georgia area. :(

So thousands are at the mercy of one of the worst hospitals in the nation. The only care they do excel in is with the PPMHs cardiologists.

I had the unfortunate experience of being in PPMH for 8 days, and was released only 3 days before the first known coronavirus patient. I was released because my hubby, and family demanded the doctors get me out of there. It was a total nightmare causing me unnecessary physical, and emotional trauma.

Many local nurses, and doctors refuse to work there fulltime so they have to hire countless traveling nurses ...which are far better than the ones who are from the area who still work there.

Even though much smaller in population our area is one of the main hotspots in Georgia for this deadly virus. So much so the CDC epidemiologists have a team here.

I'm so worried about myself, family, dear friends and all citizens who live in this area.

I'm in the elderly group with underlying conditions as of now that happened out of the blue around March 1st. The last time I was at PPMH was 1987. Until the recent stay I've been very healthy for decades, but now I know my immune system is very low.

My hubby, and I have been isolating ourselves before the feds set the 15 day socially distancing into play.

However so many down here refuse to socially distance themselves. Thousands of young adults and teens went to the beaches in droves so now they will come back to infect more, and more.

Our county, Lee, has a curfew in place, and we are suppose to only be out between 6am until 10pm with our officials saying to only get out if its job related, or absolutely necessary to go to grocery stores or pharmacies. If all doesn't abide by it though it undoes everything everyone else is trying to do to protect themselves, and all others too.

My hubby has had to go out in the public, but hes trying to remain as safe as he possibly can.

God bless us all, and our nation.

"Louisiana, New York and Georgia lead the nation in the number of nursing homes with coronavirus cases, a federal report shows."

"There are at least seven homes in each of the three states where confirmed or suspected coronavirus cases have been detected, according to Sunday’s report from the Federal Emergency Management Agency."

At least 7 Louisiana nursing homes now dealing with virus

Dr. Faucci is 79. I am very worried about his health in view of the flagrant lack of precaution these WH press conferences are enacting.

Too many people, too close, too much touching or handshaking.

Too many people opening their mouths and spewing germs into the air at very close range to the scientists. One, especially .

There should only be 3 people presenting: Drs. Faucci and Bix and one politician representative.

They should have separate podiums 5 feet apart.

Cuomo was not suggesting that. He only said they have to start thinking about it. The economy is a separate issue that will need to be reopened eventually and he mentioned having to plan for it, how to go about it.

He also said it's like walking and chewing gum at the same time, which he is doing. He mentioned that he was being criticized by many, telling him he will never be reelected in the state or anywhere ever again. (really? -IMO). He said that was not even a concern at the moment and he would do over everything decision he has made so far.

I presume you watched his presser and so I'm just giving you my interpretation of what he laid out. I don't blame you for not wanting to go back anytime soon.

Not yet, not that I know of (haven't thoroughly checked today). That test will come eventually and be really welcome.

That would be a test just for people's antibodies (I think they have to draw blood for that). Right now the swab tests are PCR tests that test for the genetic components of the virus itself, if it present in your nasal passages or throat.

Coronavirus may force Olympics to be postponed, Japan's Abe says

"Cancellation would not solve any problem and would help nobody," the International Olympic Committee's president said.

Japan has really bungled several aspects of this pandemic, most notably the Diamond Princess "quarantine". I don't know if they are determined to put on a show to make up for it, but they are at risk of harming all the good done elsewhere by the sacrifices by insisting on strong-arming countries into participating in an empty Olympics.

OCEAN...Glad you are staying in. My parents are in Valdosta and have been isolating for 3 weeks. Thank God, they refused to let anyone in. I'm in Atlanta, and staying in, although our highest risk is my immediate family...healthcare workers. Hoping Kemp does a shelter in place this afternoon.
