Amazon Workers Are Scared, Unprotected As Coronavirus Sweeps Through Warehouses | HuffPost
Earlier this week, workers at an Amazon warehouse in Staten Island, New York, were told an employee in the facility tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

Then they went back to work.

[...]

... Company founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, the richest man on earth, has said he’ll do everything he can to keep his employees safe.

But workers don’t feel that way. “To watch Amazon executives say they are protecting workers is infuriating,” one New England driver told HuffPost, asking for anonymity to protect their job.

At least 10 Amazon warehouse workers have been diagnosed with COVID-19 as of Thursday, according to public reports. ...

Amazon is the lifeline for millions in this current quarantine situation, and will be for weeks or months.

Amazon cannot be shut down because of employee infections. This is truly a World-Wide crisis evolving

I totally agree. I am getting everything off amazon right now, allowing me not to go out to supermarkets. If amazon stops delivering, where does that leave me? We are told to stay home and not congregate in groups, but that doesn't apply t supermarkets, as they can't have less than 10 person there at a time. So you have multiple people running around, far from all of them practicing good hygiene. Then you have their children (some of them could very well be asymptomatic carriers) touching everything in site.

From the article:

“Every state in the U.S. is competing,” she said on her daily briefing with reporters. “Several governors spoke [on a separate call] about the fact that they were in the process of acquiring additional masks, and the federal government came in, FEMA came in and purchased those masks from underneath them.”

[...]

According to a report from the Oregon Health Authority, the state has already handed over 100% of the gowns, 95% of the face shields and more than 80% of the sought-after N-95 respirators it had stocked up in warehouses.

Governor Brown said Wednesday a new shipment had just come in from the feds, but it only contained 25% of the PPE supplies Oregon had requested.

[...]

“I’m not exaggerating when I say this outrageous lack of action will result in lost lives, including those of our healthcare workers,” she said.

US coronavirus: The US just had its deadliest day from coronavirus. But health officials say the peak is yet to come - CNN

In California, the number of cases is doubling every three to four days. And in Louisiana, where health care workers are making masks out of office supplies, hospitals are expected to run out of beds within two weeks.

If more beds don't become available, "then we don't have resources to save the lives that we need to save," former Louisiana Secretary of Health Dr. Rebekah Gee said. "That's why these stay-at-home orders are so important."

[...]

The highest number of deaths reported in a single day came Wednesday, with 223 deaths.

But "we have not seen the peak of the crisis yet," Gee said.

[...]

I think Louisiana is at risk of becoming the next Wuhan.

California has been preparing and instituting wide quarantine and shut-down protocols.

The data from New Orleans, in particular, should be very concerning for FEMA.

I am very very worried about the lack of PPE, ICU or monitored beds, ventilators, and just general infrastructure to handle the onslaught.

Pregnant women are being forced to give birth alone as hospitals restrict visitors during coronavirus
"... I'm terrified and feel a complete loss of control. Going into a hospital to labor and deliver my first child completely alone is setting up the experience to be traumatic and likely unsafe … What should be one of the most significant and happiest days of our lives is turning into a nightmare."

[...]

"I just left a doctors appointment where I was told to prepare myself that my husband would not be at the birth of my child, and that I should buy an iPad so we can video him in," she said. "While I understand what the hospitals are going through right now and how precious supplies are, I don't understand their reasoning around this. It is honestly just cruel and inhumane."

I totally agree with this.

Why can't a partner or support person be tested and allowed to be present, with appropriate PPE?

A park in a village of 600 people near me put yellow tape around all the playground equipment, basketball court, pavilions, etc. You can still take a walk on the grounds but you can’t congregate.

His next step he said would be to shut down the NY city parks and playgrounds while closing off some streets so people can walk and exercise safely.

Commercial fishing industry members say they're trying to stay afloat while the demand for fish dwindles as restaurants are reduced to take-out only amidst the coronavirus health crisis.

Saving Seafood, a national coalition of seafood harvesters that includes New Jersey members, is now turning to the federal government for $4 billion in financial help.

In its March 19 memorandum, the Department of Homeland Security recognized seafood workers as “essential critical infrastructure workers” that warrant prioritization in government support to help protect and maintain their role in food security.

As such, the coalition is seeking $2 billion for United States Department of Agriculture activities that directly support the supply chain of domestically produced seafood to end consumers.

The program provides for the government purchase of food for consumers, starting with kids and vulnerable families.

Good news!

'Hi, Dad': Nebraska's first coronavirus patient removed from ventilator, talking to family

Nebraska's first coronavirus patient has been removed from a ventilator and has spoken her first words since being hospitalized on March 5.

Her first words? "Hi, Dad," in a deep, husky voice, according to her father.

"I was talking to my neighbors today that three weeks ago, we didn't know if she was going to live or die. And today she asked me what I was going to put in her Easter basket," the father said on Wednesday.

"When she starts saying things like that, I know she's better," he said.

The 36-year-old first patient, who is developmentally disabled and has suffered from lifelong respiratory problems, is suspected to have contracted the virus during a trip to London with her father.

I wonder if it because of the safety of the doctors and nurses, and that CDC guidelines for testing would not apply to the support persons?

Cuomo: "The outpouring of support for the people of New York has been so inspiring. Not just from New Yorkers. I'm telling you from across the country ... We've asked medical staff to volunteer ... 40,000 had volunteered. We now have 12,000 more people in one day volunteering."

Deaths from the coronavirus jumped to 385 in New York, Governor Cuomo said.

Governor Cuomo said on Thursday that as patients were staying on ventilators longer, more were dying from complications caused by the novel coronavirus.

  • More than 385 people have died in New York — 100 up from 285 yesterday.
  • Mr. Cuomo said the increasing death rate is partly a result of older and weaker people staying on ventilators for longer, from 20 to 30 days, without recovering, leaving fewer ventilators for new patients.

  • The number of virus patients hospitalized jumped by more than 40 percent in one day to over 5,300, appearing to reverse a trend where hospitalization numbers were growing by around 20
  • New York State had 37,258 confirmed cases as of Thursday morning, up more than 6,400 from Wednesday morning. Of those, 5,327 are hospitalized, including 1,290 people in intensive care. More than 1,500 people have been discharged.

  • Mr. Cuomo said the state had enough protective equipment for health care workers to satisfy the immediate need, despite recent reports of nurses and doctors in New York City reusing masks and using trash bags as gowns.

  • The governor said the state’s goal was to build at least one facility with more than 1,000 beds in each of New York City’s five boroughs and surrounding counties to manage an imminent overflow of patients.
