I think I'll just expatriate a two-hour drive south where life is much safer these days..... Mexico.
Haha Yes, I have often thought about expatriating (is that a word)

I'm not ready to give up on these drugs yet. Way too early to conclude they have no value in treating covid-19. JMO
I agree. I dont think these people have lied but IMO would they have recovered without the drug?I think it shows some interest at this point but a long way off from proven as effective. If I was near death and was offered the drug sure, nothing to lose at that point.

ITA. The WHO wouldn't be conducting trials in multiple countries if they thought they have no value.

Key Points
  • The first patients in a “historic” drug trial to test treatments for the coronavirus have been enrolled in Norway and Spain, World Health Organization officials announced Friday.
  • World health officials are testing four of the most promising drugs to fight COVID-19, including malaria medications chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, an antiviral compound called Remdesivir, a combination of HIV drugs Lopinavir and Ritonavir and a combination of those drugs plus interferon-beta.

I think doctors have been prescribing it for several months and have seen positive results and it is the reason the trials are now underway.

NEW ORLEANS

New Orleans being neglected once again. Of the 5,000 ventilators requested from the federal stockpile, "the state has received zero." #RememberKatrina #COVID19 State moving beds into convention center this weekend to prep for looming overflow of coronavirus patients
Eric Feigl-Ding on Twitter

Those numbers kept New Orleans on a trajectory to run out of ventilators by the first week in April, and to run out of hospital beds for patients by April 8th-10th, Edwards said.
“This isn’t conjecture,” Edwards said. “This isn’t some flimsy theory. This isn’t a scare tactic. This is what’s going to happen.”
The governor also said he requested 5,000 ventilators from the federal stockpile, but the state has received zero. Meanwhile, he got 92 of a 100-ventilator request and hoped to land another 100 in the coming days.
So New Orleans asked for 5000 ventilators from the federal 'stockpile.' But that stockpile is only 10, 000 ventilators, last I saw. So New Orleans asked for half of them. Not surprising that order hasn't been filled yet.

I am sure FEMA is working on it. But they don't have a secret stockpile of a million ventilators. They are working g hard on procuring more.

But let's not forget that each state is responsible for keeping track of their own necessary medical equipment, as is each hospital. The federal government will step in and try to supplement when possible. But when the entire country is in need, it makes that next to impossible.

But what about all of the recent patients who claim it saved their lives? I have seen a dozen interviews with people, who seem credible.

I tend to believe them when they say it helped them survive. Why would they lie?

Exactly. Like the guy that told his family good-bye. When they let him use it even though it wasn't approved, he woke up the next morning very glad to be alive. He said it was a miraculous recovery from absolute death. Why would he lie? There are people that are absolutely desperate. Isn't a possible side effect better than death?

I have found flour but I cannot find yeast anywhere.

Amazon has Platinum brand for about $5 for 3 packages. If you can wait until April 19. I guess lots of people are planning to make their own bread.

That's great because the initial study had 26 participants and the patients in the placebo group reported feeling better as well. (Too small a sample group). It needs more testing to keep people safe. DH is a physician and we read over and discussed the study last night. I wanted to pick his brain. He will not prescribe off-label drugs because there's tremendous liability.
Update, some are prescribing on a compassionate use basis. However, remains off-label. The manufacturer is pushing for an expanded access program. MOO.

Good Evening all. My state now has 587 cases and 4 deaths. Two weeks ago we have 0.
Two different elementary schools nearby both have a teacher that has the virus. A daycare has a teacher that has the virus, 13 people on an Army base have the virus and a person at a local Credit Union has the virus. This virus is spreading quickly as you know. I went to Walmart late this afternoon and it was swamped and ransacked. The crowd was like Christmas Time crowds. When I was leaving, a young lady worker at Walmart said to me 'Stay Safe. This is the real thing'.

School year will be finished at home.

I am really tired today and feel like hibernating.

It is amazing how much our lives have changed in a few weeks. We have gone from freedom to lockdown and it is scary.

Easy, friend. We, the people, are pretty obnoxious and difficult to tamp down. We will make it through, and we will be better, despite the suffering and lost lives that this virus is inflicting. I really do believe that, and I tend to be a crotchety (what a word!!) cynic.

We just need to increase each other's chances of getting to that point. We need to look out for each other and we need to stay informed. We need to keep an eye on our civil liberties, while keeping our eyes on the goal.

ETA - also maybe take a look at air quality maps, especially over China, if you want a sense of hope and what can be when we decide to stop being so "extra" all the time (to borrow a youthful phrase).

If the drug is approved for other conditions, the side effects must not be all that bad compared to death. The point of the clinical trials is to learn about side effects, the severity of side effects and to better determine dosage.

JMO
I’ve read that it takes really high doses for this, though. So while I didn’t experience side effects from a normal dose, I don’t know that I would not if they gave me a much higher dose.

I am open-minded about this.

As long as people who already have Rx's for conditions that depend on these drugs, there's no problem. Until we run out. It would be nice to have some idea which group of people would benefit from any drug in short supply (and soon, many of them will be in short supply).

I do believe some nations who have had the ability to test way more people, per capita, are starting some drug trials.

I don't understand why they can't return to the port of entry.

I don't understand either and I cannot find any information as to why is it coming all the way from South America to the USA?

Trump didn't want the cruise ship from Hawaii to port in California a few weeks ago, so why are we allowing this SA ship to port here?

But that's what is so interesting about some of their stories. Several of them have said they were in severe crisis before being given the drugs---very hard to breathe, put on ventilators, feeling they were going to die---and within 24 hours in some cases, they made complete turnarounds. Within 8 to 10 hours, able to breathe much better and felt they were going to recover.

I have read several accounts just like that. It gives me hope.

Well, we have now bumped up to 627 cases, It is spreading like crazy. I do have to say at Walmart, the worker at the self check-out was wiping everything down after each person self checked out. That was a good sign.
