DeWine says Ohio lab develops process to sterilize 160K surgical masks a day

A local non-profit laboratory has developed a way to get up to 160,000 surgical masks a day back in use by medical professionals, Gov. Mike DeWine said during his Saturday COVID-19 coronavirus update.

Battelle Institute, based in Columbus, has developed a machine that can sterilize 80,000 surgical masks a day, according to DeWine.

The institute is building two machines and is awaiting FDA approval to begin using the machines, DeWine said. The machines would be based in Ohio.

DeWine made a public appeal to the FDA to approve the process as soon as possible.

“Please, please, give us the approval to use these,” he said. “We have nurses, we have doctors, we have people working in nursing homes who need the masks.”

ACLU objects to giving State Police power to pull over cars with N.Y. plates in response to coronavirus - The Boston Globe

Governor Gina Raimondo on Thursday ordered anyone traveling to Rhode Island from New York to stay quarantined for 14 days, saying the State Police would stop cars with New York license plates to help halt the spread of coronavirus.

The American Civil Liberties Union objected, calling the order an unconstitutional “blunderbuss approach.”

“While the Governor may have the power to suspend some state laws and regulations to address this medical emergency, she cannot suspend the Constitution," said Steven Brown, executive director of the ACLU of Rhode Island.

“Under the Fourth Amendment, having a New York state license plate simply does not, and cannot, constitute ‘probable cause’ to allow police to stop a car and interrogate the driver, no matter how laudable the goal of the stop may be,” he said.

Report: Coronavirus Could Kill Hundreds Of Homeless People In LA County
March 28, 2020 at 9:14 am

“LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — As many as 400 people experiencing homelessness in L.A. County could die from the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a report published Friday by the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and two other universities

Researchers found that the pandemic will likely kill over 3,400 homeless people across the United States. Up to 1,200 of those deaths could come from California, and over 7,000 homeless people could be hospitalized in the state due to COVID-19.”
Based on my reading,IMO, I think this is grossly undervalued and why the states are taking extensive steps to find building to isolate.

A couple quick notes.

Dr. Mike talked quite a bit about “technology”, as related to tracking, apps...Marking that this took place on Wednesday, March 25th PC and wanted to pull the full section on that, because it was extra interesting considering it was a topic of discussion here when China had their “CV apps”...remember @dixiegirl1035 ? Anyway, Dr. Mike is obviously very knowledgeable about technology in many regards, and said he wishes he could talk about it more. What he said was very interesting imo. Dr. Maria later supplemented on other technological aspects.

Also, noting to find info on Thursday’s G20 Conference.

Let’s see there was something else I wanted the Q & A transcript for...

Idk...also wanting to maybe highlight again the six steps that WHO recommends for all countries.

Congratulations to me btw on my 30 day anniversary of self-imposed isolationo_O One month today, and “30 Days in the Hole”. It feels like an accomplishment. @Lato and @Oregonmama , congrats to you as well on the one month mark.

@MJPeony , how are things for you in Santa Clara County?

Also making note to self to check CDC website...any latest briefings by Dr. Nancy, or has she been quiet lately?

ETA:
Coronavirus: Santa Clara County has 17 new cases, 5 new deaths

Yes, iirc the rest of the story on the phones were that they were "government phones" that were given to the folks in quarantine that then the government could access their location, and they had to interact on it with government during isolation. No link, just iirc.

ETA @Amonet just posted this.. same idea, yet in China iirc they were govm't issued phones

UK daily check-in text service

People in self-isolation with suspected Covid-19 symptoms are to receive regular check-in texts from the NHS to check how they are.

On Saturday the UK government launched a new messaging service which will send daily texts to new patients who register their symptoms and contact details with the 111 online service.

If I lived in Rhode Island I would tell Cuomo to kiss my foot.... Why should Rhode Island want to up it's Virus problem with Tri - State refugees ?......Rhode Island is not the only state placing Tri-Staters in quarantine. <modsnip> ....moo
Most of Nebraska cases are travel related. The first was travel from London, then airplane from Minneapolis, chaperone of student from Spain, now many from Colorado. Our DHHS has recomended self quarantine for people traveling from hot spots, ie New York City.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

Further one area in Nebraska (which borders Colorado) is recomending 14 days self-quarantine if you come back to their area.

BBM:

“Preparing for the worst, hospital administrators across the state continued Friday to clear all available beds for an influx of patients. San Francisco ordered priority testing for doctors and nurses to try to prevent sick health practitioners from becoming super-spreaders of the disease.”

[...]

“Although a system overload remained the fear, one projection from University of Washington epidemiologists suggested that California’s 9-day-old stay-at-home order might keep the hospital overload below catastrophic levels. And Dr. Robert Kim-Farley, a UCLA epidemiologist, said Friday that after a considerable uptick in cases, “I think we should be able to see some leveling off of those numbers in a couple of weeks, because of the physical distancing measures.””

How bad will the next few weeks be for California as coronavirus cases surge?

With the interest of public safety being the goal, if a state wanted to stop every single car coming in, and subject the occupants to the same testing, then they might be able to legally justify that methodology and win in a Federal court of law, based on the DUI checkpoint laws that have been upheld.

Otherwise, it's flat out unconstitutional. And this is why, there is no stopping the spread of this virus in the U.S.

It is clear to me there is a large population in the U.S. that simply is NOT self quarantining, and I suspect that population to grow as the people 1. become cognizant of the fact that many others are not following the Government's suggestions, and 2. become weary of being cooped up for so long.

Coronavirus cases on the rise in Orange County
15 hours ago

“ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. - Orange County's number of coronavirus cases jumped to 403 Saturday as another 85 cases were confirmed, the largest daily increase yet.”

[...]

“County officials are also releasing more details about coronavirus cases in individual cities, with Anaheim showing the highest number of confirmed cases, closely followed by Irvine and Newport Beach. County health leaders, however, implored residents to not read too much into the data,
because a higher number of cases in one spot could be attributed to a variety of factors such as more access to testing because of health insurance coverage.”

[...]

“The first coronavirus diagnosis of an inmate in the Orange County jail system was received by sheriff's officials on Tuesday. An inmate in his 40s tested positive and was placed in isolation. He had been booked on June 17, 2018, on suspicion of child endangerment, torture, false imprisonment and
assault with a deadly weapon.”

RELATED: Orange County sheriff to begin early release of some inmates

•I know this has been previously discussed, but still looking for clarification on if they’re letting violent offenders and child molesters out, trouble with above link.

ETA:

“Sheriff Don Barnes said nonviolent offenders and those medically vulnerable will be eligible for early release.”

So, does this include violent offenders who are medically vulnerable?

PHILADELPHIA

the center of Philadelphia, a city bracing for the spread of the coronavirus and a crush of sick patients.

But the facility will remain empty, city officials said, because they cannot accept the owner’s offer: buy the hospital or lease it for almost $1 million a month, including utilities and other costs.

“We don’t have the need to own it nor the resources to buy it. So we are done and we are moving on,” Mayor Jim Kenney told reporters on Thursday during the city’s daily briefing.

The next day, he said that Temple University would let the city use a music and sports venue for free. The city would no longer pursue the closed facility, Hahnemann University Hospital.

SCOTT GOTTLIEB

I’ll be releasing later today with expert thought leaders a detailed plan for how we transition between population based mitigation now being employed in many cities to case based interventions and other tactics as chains of epidemic spread are hopefully broken in mid/late April Scott Gottlieb, MD on Twitter

Staying at home is what we need to be doing now. But as we get through April, and chains of epidemic transmission are hopefully broken through our current mitigation steps, we can start to transition to different approaches that gradually rely more on case based interventions.

April will be hard month but we'll get through it. This will end. We need to stick with current strategies. We can look toward May as month when we carefully transition to new posture. For now focus must be on supporting healthcare systems, preserving life, ending epidemic spread.

"However, the percentage rise in new invections in Italy-- 7.4 per cent --was the lowest yet."

Just did the math, that's a rate of doubling every 10 days. *yeah for elementary school math schooling*

It’s raining here, which puts a stop to my plans to mow the lawn this afternoon (like I needed an excuse).
Instead, alongside the chilli, I’ve used a glut of tomatoes and made tomato basil soup. Just about to make a loaf of bread to go with it.
Cooking is my distraction - unable to tear myself away from the news today and it’s all so grim.
