DeWine says Ohio lab develops process to sterilize 160K surgical masks a day

A local non-profit laboratory has developed a way to get up to 160,000 surgical masks a day back in use by medical professionals, Gov. Mike DeWine said during his Saturday COVID-19 coronavirus update.

Battelle Institute, based in Columbus, has developed a machine that can sterilize 80,000 surgical masks a day, according to DeWine.

The institute is building two machines and is awaiting FDA approval to begin using the machines, DeWine said. The machines would be based in Ohio.

DeWine made a public appeal to the FDA to approve the process as soon as possible.

“Please, please, give us the approval to use these,” he said. “We have nurses, we have doctors, we have people working in nursing homes who need the masks.”

Governor Gina Raimondo on Thursday ordered anyone traveling to Rhode Island from New York to stay quarantined for 14 days, saying the State Police would stop cars with New York license plates to help halt the spread of coronavirus.

The American Civil Liberties Union objected, calling the order an unconstitutional “blunderbuss approach.”

“While the Governor may have the power to suspend some state laws and regulations to address this medical emergency, she cannot suspend the Constitution," said Steven Brown, executive director of the ACLU of Rhode Island.

“Under the Fourth Amendment, having a New York state license plate simply does not, and cannot, constitute ‘probable cause’ to allow police to stop a car and interrogate the driver, no matter how laudable the goal of the stop may be,” he said.

Researchers found that the pandemic will likely kill over 3,400 homeless people across the United States. Up to 1,200 of those deaths could come from California, and over 7,000 homeless people could be hospitalized in the state due to COVID-19.”

Based on my reading,IMO, I think this is grossly undervalued and why the states are taking extensive steps to find building to isolate.

Dr. Mike talked quite a bit about “technology”, as related to tracking, apps...Marking that this took place on Wednesday, March 25th PC and wanted to pull the full section on that, because it was extra interesting considering it was a topic of discussion here when China had their “CV apps”...remember @dixiegirl1035 ? Yes, iirc the rest of the story on the phones were that they were "government phones" that were given to the folks in quarantine that then the government could access their location, and they had to interact on it with government during isolation. No link, just iirc.

Most of Nebraska cases are travel related. The first was travel from London, then airplane from Minneapolis, chaperone of student from Spain, now many from Colorado. Our DHHS has recomended self quarantine for people traveling from hot spots, ie New York City.

Further one area in Nebraska (which borders Colorado) is recomending 14 days self-quarantine if you come back to their area.

With the interest of public safety being the goal, if a state wanted to stop every single car coming in, and subject the occupants to the same testing, then they might be able to legally justify that methodology and win in a Federal court of law, based on the DUI checkpoint laws that have been upheld.

Otherwise, it's flat out unconstitutional. And this is why, there is no stopping the spread of this virus in the U.S.

It is clear to me there is a large population in the U.S. that simply is NOT self quarantining, and I suspect that population to grow as the people 1. become cognizant of the fact that many others are not following the Government's suggestions, and 2. become weary of being cooped up for so long.

Staying at home is what we need to be doing now. But as we get through April, and chains of epidemic transmission are hopefully broken through our current mitigation steps, we can start to transition to different approaches that gradually rely more on case based interventions.

April will be hard month but we'll get through it. This will end. We need to stick with current strategies. We can look toward May as month when we carefully transition to new posture. For now focus must be on supporting healthcare systems, preserving life, ending epidemic spread.
