The number of people already infected by the mystery virus emerging in China is far greater than official figures suggest, scientists have told the BBC.

There have been 41 laboratory-confirmed cases of the new virus, but UK experts estimate the figure is closer to 1,700.

New virus in China ‘will have infected hundreds'

Up to 4,500 patients in China may have caught the same strain of coronavirus that has killed two people, scientists fear.

Health officials in Wuhan – the city at the heart of the outbreak which started in December – confirmed four new cases today, taking the total to 48.

But Imperial College London researchers say this may be the 'tip of the iceberg' after analysing flights out of the city.

Experts say the fact three Chinese tourists have tested positive for the virus outside Wuhan indicates the disease toll may be higher than reported.

Hey Everyone,

We are putting together a forum for the virus. If you have any ideas for the categories to be included in the forum please send me a private message. Here is what I am thinking so far:
Each state will have its own thread. We will ask everyone to put in information about their state.
A general discussion where this thread and the past threads will be located.
A media thread of course.
Debunking all the kooky crap out there discussion.
Daily count of how many cases are being reported and how many deaths. We would have other countries included. This would be a no discussion thread too.
I have a few more ideas but I am open to anything.
Thanks.
Tricia

Let me clear something up. We will all be together on this thread discussing just like we are now. The other categories will be added so you all can access certain pieces of info more quickly.

MOD NOTE
A few things to help keep this vital discussion open and safe:

  • This forum is NOT for debate. It is for the sharing of information and feelings. If someone’s feelings are not in line with yours, DO NOT DEBATE. It is not productive and it negates the purpose of the discussion here. STOP before you reply in anger to someone who posted something you do not agree with or like. REPORT it instead and Mods will determine how to handle it or whether it can stay. DO NOT DEBATE.
  • Discussing personal FB posts of ANY kind, yours included, is a violation of TOS. Apparently Facebook has had a technical glitch and numerous posts by many folks were deleted in error. THAT IS NOT FOR DISCUSSION ON THIS BOARD, and those posts talking about it will be deleted.
  • ANY of the above CAN be discussed in Private Messages. That is where these subjects belong.
This is an extremely difficult and challenging time for all of us. It is not uncommon for fear to manifest itself in anger. We can try our best to direct our fear and anger in ways that do not hurt others, but will still allow for venting anger because that is normal and healthy. We just need to try to keep the anger off the boards so that we can all manage our fear at such a time as this.

BASHING WS ADMINISTRATORS and MODERATORS, and THEIR ACTIONS

Posting in a thread to comment on, question, or criticize moderator or administrator action is not allowed. Please utilize the board's Private Message function or email to contact staff if you wish to discuss these issues. As long as you bring up your concerns maturely and civilly to the moderator or administrator in question, we will do our best to address your concerns fairly and promptly.

Here are the Dos and Donts of addressing your concerns to moderators or administrators:

Do be civil and polite. Bring up your concerns in a mature and respectful manner. If you are contacting us because you violated forum guidelines, be adult enough to admit your mistake. If your ID has been locked for some reason, talking politely to us about it in private, via e-mail or private message, can get your ID reinstated in many cases.

Do not be derogatory or insulting towards us. You will not get what you want by name calling or bashing us.

All we ask is that you treat us the way you would want us to treat you. If you treat us with respect, we will do the same for you.

Realize that a lot goes on behind the scenes. If you are thinking to yourself "Those moderators are either total idiots or they know something I do not", it's safe to assume we know something you do not.

Make sure you "Click to expand" the quoted Rule.

Just bear in mind you probably don't know the full and true story.

Do NOT respond to this post.

The coronavirus death toll in New York passed the 1,000 mark on Sunday evening, a bleak indication that the state’s fight against the virus will require even bolder efforts. The news comes after Gov. Andrew Cuomo recorded 237 new deaths from the virus in New York overnight, the biggest 24-hour increase on record. “I don’t think there’s any way to look at those numbers without seeing thousands of people pass away,” Cuomo said.

On Sunday, Mount Sinai Hospital and Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian humanitarian aid organization, began setting up an emergency field hospital in Central Park to accommodate the expected surge in coronavirus patients. The hospital tents will have 68 beds and 10 intensive care beds. New York has at least 59,513 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, with 33,768 of them in New York City.

Across the nation, 143,055 people have now been infected, according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University as of Monday morning, and 2,513 people have lost their lives to the disease.

I knew from the start we were given very bad advice to not wear masks. If they were concerned about general public competing with medical professionals for masks, they could have advised from the start for general public to wear homemade cotton masks. This virus is clearly not just transmitted by touching contaminated surfaces, so washing your hands all day long is only going to go so far.
I don't think anybody should be going out without wearing mask of some sort. And I feel for the poor store clerks, from reading, some stores don't even allow them to wear their own masks.

CDC: Japanese Data Show Indoor Coronavirus Transmission 18.7 Times Likelier, as Garcetti Moves L.A. Homeless to Rec Centers

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently published a paper reporting that Japanese data showed that coronavirus transmission was nearly 20 times more likely indoors than outdoors.

L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti is moving hundreds of homeless people into recreation centers in residential areas — a policy that is receiving increasing scrutiny and criticism from residents and the media."

Good article, that talks about the high spread of person-to-person transmission of coronavirus in healthcare settings, in church, cruise ships, and they even mention restaurants.

"Environmental factors [in trasmission] include population density and the availability and use of infection prevention and control measures in healthcare facilities. SARS and MERS had relatively low rates of person-to-person transmission but caused explosive outbreaks in healthcare settings (28). Rapid person-to-person transmission of COVID-19 appears likely to have occurred in healthcare settings, on a cruise ship, and in a church (3). In a study of 110 case-patients from 11 clusters in Japan, all clusters were associated with closed environments, including fitness centers, shared eating environments, and hospitals, the odds for transmission from a primary case-patient were 18.7 times higher than in open-air environments (H. Nishiura et al., unpub. data, External Link). SARS-CoV-2 is present in stool (33); ensuring cleanliness of toilets and other potentially contaminated surfaces is needed, and measures to prevent aerosolization from plumbing, as might have occurred in the Amoy Garden outbreak of SARS (24), might need to be implemented. Evidence of environmental contamination by SARS-CoV-2 through respiratory droplets and fecal shedding highlights the need for effective decontamination efforts and strict adherence to environmental hygiene, which are pertinent to prevention and control of transmission, including SSEs (34).

New CDC guidelines on the care of homeless populations caution against clearing encampments during the outbreak, and suggest that moving them to individual housing units, rather than common spaces, is preferable."

White House vows to start doling out emergency loans to small businesses this week
"Trump administration officials vow to launch a massive new loan program for small businesses by Friday in a frenetic effort to prevent them from laying off workers or going out of business as the coronavirus pandemic shuts down large segments of the economy.

The $2 trillion bipartisan financial-rescue package signed by President Trump two days ago includes $350 billion in desperately needed relief for small-company operators whose sales have plunged or whose businesses have been ordered closed. Many could fail if the widespread disruptions to the economy persist for more than a month."

I’m retired and claim Social Security — do I still get the $1,200 stimulus check?

"The checks, which are nontaxable, will be based on 2019 tax returns if they’ve already been filed (though the deadline has been delayed to July 15), and for those who have yet to send in their returns, 2018 figures. The checks are based on all income, which means retirees, Social Security and those who claim other benefits, such as Supplemental Security Income, are eligible. The government can use a beneficiary’s Social Security statements to calculate the check amount if a person did not file taxes — and send the check based on the information on file, according to AARP.

Certain cases may make it tricky for retirees to get the proper amount though, experts said. There are circumstances where retirees may have been working in 2018, or even 2019, and earning more than the income limits, but now are below those thresholds, said Jamie Hopkins, director of retirement research at Carson Group.

There are also instances where people may get more in their checks than they should have, such as for those who earned less in the previous year but more now. They will get to keep the full amount of the check, said Jeffrey Levine, director of advanced planning at Buckingham Wealth Partners."

Forbes article re National Doctors Day

On National Doctors’ Day, 15 Heroic First-Hand Stories From The Coronavirus Front Lines

"In 1990, the Federal government declared March 30 to be “National Doctors’ Day,” enshrining into law a day that had already been celebrated since 1933. Now more than ever, this is a moment worth observing, as physicians across the United States find themselves on the battlefield against the COVID-19 pandemic.

It’s in honor of this work that we’ve decided to turn the floor over to them. Reporters from our health team—Alex Knapp, Katie Jennings and Leah Rosenbaum—reached out to 15 doctors, ranging from pediatricians to pulmonologists to physicians, across the country, all of whom have leadership roles in their positions and are dealing with the pandemic in different ways. These are their stories."

This information is in DIRECT opposition to what I have understood. I have heard that you have to have EARNED income. In other words, this perhaps is misleading as they are talking about recent retirees who earned in the last year or so?

Can anyone explain which is correct as I think it's untrue that if you are retired and have no EARNED income you will get a check (the situation being.....for those who are living off retirement assests, and don't get a social security check, just pension and investments.... I did not think eligible. )
