Coronavirus: 'Concerning' rise in car journeys as people urged to stay at home

A "concerning" rise in car journeys has sparked fresh warnings for people to stay at home during the coronavirus lockdown.

Dr Yvonne Doyle, medical director of Public Health England, revealed motor vehicle usage in Britain has jumped to around a third of usual levels.

Despite a gradual drop off to 27% on Sunday, the number leaped by 10% to 37% the following day.

Bus and underground journeys in London also rose, but National Rail train usage dipped slightly compared to the latest figures.

Speaking at the daily Downing Street briefing, Dr Doyle said that while "most people" are following the rules to stay at home "everyone needs to do that" because "we need to save lives and protect the NHS" during the COVID-19 outbreak.
Could that increase from 27% on Sunday to 37% on Monday be essential workers?

That looks exactly like me!! :D

Lol, looking back on my post it seems I was a little edgy this morning...

Here’s where I think I’m “at” at the moment:

I think I might entering the “acceptance phase”....I still go back and forth between acceptance and disbelief though of course and I’ll catch myself saying “is this really happening?”, all that same old “Twilight Zone” stuff, but what I’m saying is I’ve already gone through the initial, earlier weeks of chest pain, nausea, dizziness, dripping sweat, fainting spells...I think a lot of that was the SHOCK part. Shock can be very traumatic sometimes. And “dread”...

So, now, there is not as much shock or dread because it is now a current reality. IT IS ALREADY HERE (ugh Poltergeist :”they’re heeeeeere...”)

I think that my acceptance is a positive emotional step in itself, and I think it is helping me to feel a lighter load emotionally now that I’m moving out of “shock and dread” phase.

Also, no more frustration of trying to prove my points and warn people and educate people that it’s coming because it’s already here. I don’t have to deal with any more idiots and naysayers.

Everyone will have different cycles of various emotions, in different times and phases.

I’ve done everything I can possibly do for my household. So I can finally just rest. Get this home in order, do some yoga, cook...there’s only so much you can do and I’ve done everything I can think of to the best my ability and budget and had has been weeks of hard work.

Also, since I’ve been home for a month no with NO EXCEPTIONS, that anxiety is now over of “sweating that last Uber ride” three week’s Ago...

There’s some comfort and peace that comes with not going out. You don’t have to worry for the next 2 weeks+ (I say at least 3 weeks moo) “omg was I exposed...”

Remember every small chance you take could be “that one time”...

There needs to be huge reminder for everyone HOW HIGHLY HIGHLY contagious this. I know some people have to go places and all we can do is or best but please, please, think VERY HARD if it is WORTH taking the risk when you go to the store.

Opt for delivery if you can. Only go out if you absolutely absolutely have to.

OT kind of. Mr. Kali and I love Tennis. No other sports really, but love tennis. However, the whole world is going without their favorite sports.
(I'm a big tennis fan too. Federer, Nadal, Djokovic are not getting any younger either to miss Wimbledon and French open this year. US open is scheduled Aug 24 - Sep 13. Doable?)

Coronavirus: Rick Astley to play free gig for NHS and emergency workers at end of pandemic

Coronavirus: Rick Astley to play free gig for NHS and emergency workers at end of pandemic
The Never Gonna Give You Up singer is set to perform a huge "thank you" show at the Manchester Arena in October.

Rick Astley has announced a free gig for NHS staff and emergency workers once venues are open again at the end of the coronavirus crisis.

The singer, best known for his late-'80s hit Never Gonna Give You Up, posted details of the Manchester Arena show on social media.

In a video message, the 54-year-old said it is the only way he knows how to say thank you to those working on the frontline to fight the outbreak of COVID-19, the disease caused by coronavirus.

I know several people like this. It's a total hoax. Let it run its course (that from a nurse *blink*). I'm stunned. Jmo
In my circle women are more likely to defy directives. I suppose since they shop? Also, I’ve noticed women I know are most apt to bend the facts to suit their situation de jour. I think the longer the isolation continues the more defiance we’ll see. Jmo

Hang in there, @Kensie , take deep breaths, listen to calming music, and don't watch the news too much. Peace and strength to you. Praying!

NYC to turn US Open tennis courts into hospital for coronavirus patients with hopes of playing in August, Mayor de Blasio says
...
Part of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens will be converted into a temporary hospital with 350 beds for non-ICU patients from Elmhurst Hospital, which has been one of the facilities that has “borne the brunt” of the coronavirus pandemic spreading in the city, de Blasio said.
...
Officials said they hope the city will be able to host the annual tennis tournament, which is one of four Grand Slams throughout the year.

Regarding cruise ships left to drift with no place to dock. I realize no state or area should have to shoulder the responsibility for docking all the cruise ships, but as a humane society, we can't allow them to drift endlessly until everyone on board dies. If this is what our society has become, then we should be ashamed. The cruise lines have canceled all the cruises, so at least let the ships remaining at sea to dock.

MOO

Regarding the passengers on the cruise ships - these cruises are at most 2 week cruises but average 5 or 7 day cruises ? So they boarded the ship knowing there was an epidemic of the coronavirus, knowing about the cruise ship passengers in Japan and California ? Spring breakers that voluntarily went on a cruise instead of the beach ? I wish them all good health but the situation they are in is due to their own actions. IMO

I've been thinking about this so much....kinda out of the box.

These folks will need to be treated on the ship. FT Lauderdale, even including the surrounding area does NOT have enough capacity. There are NOT enough beds, period.

Leon Musk says he has hospital grade ventilators ready to go. The stipulation is they must be put into immediate use to prevent stockpiling.

I think Holland Cruise needs to take up Elon's offer, he loves being the hero. He may can even round up some of those really smart CA doctors.

Holland doing nothing and expecting the US to use a vast amount of resources for a ship that is not even registered nor pays US tax. Sure they bring a lot of visitors spending money, but it will be many, many years before folks board a ship again. I would hope.

The US will have to intercede, as an international humanitarian effort. The ship in CA was a military operation. This should be no different. I'm hoping WHO and a few international organizations will step up.

What do we do about the 'other" ships sitting just off our coast seeking refuse?

Moo....

Although I feel absolutely terrible for those people stuck on those ships, I have to be honest and say that I don’t want them docked in the state I live in, Florida.

Our governor still will not lock down our state. My county is on lock down as are a few others...but this was done by the mayors of those areas, not by the governor. South Florida is filled with many elderly people that will never have a chance if bringing in all these infected people there. It will then spread like wildfire throughout the state.
I can’t imagine what these people were thinking. But also think the cruise lines should have cancelled the cruises, thus giving the passengers no option. Now another crisis to add to an already critical crisis situation. Irresponsibility all around, IMO.

Small Victories....:p

I was determined to find some toilet paper somehow. I had two instacart orders, and neither delivered any paper supplies. And my daughter had been on two grocery runs for us, and no luck.

Then when I saw the posts about the possible strikes by Amazon employees and instacart employees, and Whole Foods, I began to be concerned....

I had heard rumours that our Home Depot has TP when it opens, at 6 am. But it is gone quickly.

So my wonderful daughter and her boyfriend said they didnt want me or hubby to go, they would do it....I told them I had masks for them, so they would be safer too.

We agreed to meet in the 7/11 parking lot at 5:45, and hand off the masks. When I arrived, I looked at the front window of 7/11, AND THERE WAS AN ENTIRE WALL OF TOILET PAPER AND NAPKINS AND PAPER TOWELS, right in front of me....

Are you SURE it wasn't just a dream???

One of our newest cases in my county is a 90 yr old woman who left on a cruise ship on March 6th, returned on March 16th, came home from Louisiana and immediately self-isolated. She has tested positive, but she did the right thing. My state also took people from cruise ships and housed them in our state. There are humane ways to help people.

A cluster of positive people in my state are popping up from a birthday party on March 14th, apparently a quincenera with 400 people from all over the country and Mexico. Another 20 yr old person just came back from Mexico, other people are testing positive from travel to our adjacent state (Colorado). So everyone does things that causes us to go hmmmm, yet I'm not ready to judge anyone else's behavior. I stay at home, and see no one, so I know I'm safe.

MOO

Strange as it seems, too many people believed that the virus was hoax/hype, that it would blow over in a couple of weeks, and so they could carry on with business as usual. Those are the people who are stuck on a sick cruise ship, stranded in the wrong country, and partying hard.

My son was going to travel with some friends from Melbourne to Vietnam in early March, but changed his mind at the last minute. Those people are stuck in Vietnam. Many other travellers decided to ride it out in Melbourne, not realizing that flights would be cancelled and options would be eliminated.

People who boarded cruise ships after the virus spread around the world believed that this would blow over in no time, that ships were clean, and that the virus only attacks sick old people.
Sick people are sick people though, wherever they may be IMO. I don't even know the nationalities or how long they have been on board but it is immaterial IMO.
