I started on mine this morning. I didn’t get far before the razor clogged up. I decided I’ll work a bit on it daily. :D

Ahahahaha!! :D

:mad:This is ridiculous! The passengers had to of known when they walked on those ships that there was a pandemic upon us. AND Carnival shouldn’t have even been operating.
IMO, most of us make the right choice when faced with a life or death situation. My husband and I knew better than two go on a two week road trip. Those people willingly rolled the dice despite knowing what the situation was. At some they need to take responsibility for their actions. Who do they expect to pick up the tab, anyways?

I agree.

We had a paid cruise on Feb 22-29 out of New Orleans and it was getting hairy then. We didn’t go and took the hit, even with travel insurance (who did not reimburse btw).

I wish I could find some. Stores are limiting the amount of items you can buy but I still have not seen any toilet paper for two weeks.
I keep expecting someone to start selling TP rolls out of their garage soon.
And a whole truck load of TP wasted. :(
18-wheeler carrying toilet paper crashes in Dallas

DALLAS - A tractor-trailer loaded with toilet paper went up in flames early Wednesday morning near Dallas.

The driver of the 18-wheeler reportedly lost control around 4:30 a.m. on westbound Interstate 20 near Interstate 45. The truck ended up on its side and caught fire.

And, you're thanking your lucky stars you didn't go, I'll bet.

@otto I planned to list a remote vacay home in western Mi this summer, but now going to hold off a year, or longer. Home prices are really low in Mi, compared to where I live in KY, I do fear MI will plummet. Jmo. In my area of KY, they need to drop a bit, but I don’t see that happening. Jmo

I have no idea how to read the situation. On the one hand, the economy could be a real mess and housing properties could fall to half of what they are today, but on the other hand when it's business as usual, everyone's salaries could be restored and property values could be the same as today.

FEMA has requested 100,000 bodybags from the Pentagon, which currently has around 50,000 in stockpile.

Pentagon Seeking 100,000 Body Bags for Civilians in Virus Crisis

As soon as the lockdowns are lifted we are sure to see another rise around June-July. I think we will see a more dangerous situation in August-September than the one we are in now, with further lockdowns happening around September-October heading towards Christmas and possibly into the New Year. The second wave that will appear around September-October will be deadlier due to complacency and lockdown fatigue. A limited third wave may appear around February-March 2021.

I'm not sure I would want my child to return to a school (scheduled to open in May, according to FL) that housed virus patients. As to churches, you don't see Joel Osteen volunteering Lakewood in Houston, do you?

Always make the best decision for you and your family, regardless of what anyone else says. Schools and post-secondary institutions are 100% online until September in my area. Projections are that this virus situation will continue for another 12 weeks, that transmission may slow somewhat in the Summer, and there will be a second wave in the Fall.

People were unprepared for the second wave during the 1918 flu, we can't make the same mistake again.

The Zaadam was supposed to end its tour in San Antonio, Chile. And began its tour in Argentina. Not one part nor one port of that tour had anything to do with the USA. The ship is flagged in Holland. Meaning they don't pay any USA dictated minimum wage, they don't have to follow environmental rules of the USA, and they don't pay any taxes in the USA.

Why didn't they stay in the Pacific and head for California? Did they get advance notice from the governor of Florida that if they made it thru the Panama Canal they could dock in Florida? They had to have some official incentive to come to Florida, IMO.

I've been following this conversation, and I too feel badly for people who made bad choices, but this is on par with planning to send "surplus" ventilators to Europe when when we need them ourselves, or $100,000,000 of medical supplies to Italy because we don't need those supplies ourselves.

Meanwhile entire online forums and youtube channels are dedicated to citizens' making masks to help protect medical staff. And there is a run on vacuum cleaner bags to provide some filtration.

AND, Trump said he wanted to use part of the stimulus bill to make the cruise ship companies "vibrant".

Trump says $1 trillion coronavirus relief package will ‘help everybody’

I don't get that either, I thought I had read that the ship was only half way after leaving it's port, I think Argentina ? So why didn't it just turn around and go back there instead of coming all the way to Florida. Anyone here who can clear that up in case I missed something? TIA

Norwegian Cruise Line managers urged salespeople to spread falsehoods about coronavirus - The Boston Globe

"WASHINGTON — Norwegian Cruise Line managers urged their sales teams to share false information about the coronavirus to help land bookings with potential customers, including that the virus can’t affect people in ‘‘tropical temperatures,’’ leaked e-mails from a company whistle-blower show.

The e-mails, first reported by Miami New Times, show the lengths to which the US cruise giant’s leaders have gone to protect the company against the devastating financial impact of the pandemic, which has infected more than 121,000 people around the world and killed more than 4,300."
-----------------------------------
"The recommended lines, written last month by a manager whose LinkedIn profile suggests the person has worked at the company for more than eight years, also compared the number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus with the flu and said, falsely, that the virus ‘‘cannot live in the amazingly warm and tropical temperatures that your cruise will be sailing to.’’

‘‘The only thing you need to worry about for your cruise is do you have enough sunscreen?’’ the manager wrote in an e-mail addressed to dozens employees in two sales offices in Florida."
----------------------------------------------------------
"In the e-mail of one-liners, sales representatives were told to ‘‘NOT USE THESE unless the coronavirus is brought up.’’ But the whistle-blower said the virus is callers’ top concern: ‘‘Every single call we’re getting right now is about the virus. Everyone wants to know what’s going on, what’s happening to the ships. Most people just want to cancel.’’
-------------------------------------------------------
"In another leaked Norwegian Cruise Line e-mail, another sales manager based at the company’s Miami office suggested that ‘‘medical fear stories’’ were being exaggerated to make ‘‘more moola for the fat cats at major media houses.’’

‘‘Focusing all of your attention is actually illogical, especially when we live in a world of daily threats and dangers anyhow,’’ the manager wrote under the headline ‘‘The coronavirus will not affect you.’’ ‘‘Fact: Coronavirus in humans is an overhyped pandemic scare.’’"

zaandam update

Maybe some of the quotes will answer your question or add information:

The ship was originally scheduled to arrive at Port Everglades on April 7 at the end of a 31-day cruise that originated in Buenos Aires, Argentina on March 7, and made stops along the coast of South America. Holland America has confirmed that 411 passengers were booked on the 31-day cruise. The remaining passengers were booked on shorter segments, including a 14 day cruise that was scheduled to end in San Antonio, Chile. Since the cruise was terminated before arriving at San Antonio, all those passengers remain on the ship. After arriving at Port Everglades on April 7, the ship was scheduled to go into dry dock for two weeks, then return to Port Everglades to leave for Canada on the first leg of its reposi
...
There are 1,243 passengers aboard the Zaandam, including 305 U.S. citizens and 247 Canadians. There are 49 Florida residents on board, including several Broward County residents.
...
Holland America Line has been a primary customer for Port Everglades since the mid-1930s. Further the Zaandam was christened at Port Everglades by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in May 2000.

This cruise season, October 2019 through May 2020, Holland America had 11 cruise ships scheduled to sail from Port Everglades, including Zaandam.

...
Btw. It is Netherlands, not Holland

Thank you! That is helpful information!

305 - US
247 - Canada
691 - ?

411 were expecting to get off in Florida on the 31 day trip.

So, the majority expected to depart in South America - Could the rest of the passengers be from South America since that was the end of the 14 day cruise?
What a nightmare.

We put off a long awaited and much needed trip as well. Even then I never thought it would get this bad. :(

Next question: how are the non-Americans going to get home?
And: how would you like to be on a ship with 4 dead passengers? Not exactly what you signed up for, eh?

But a lot of 401K's, and IRA'S are being gutted by the stock market so the people with any money now, won't be buying. And in the closest major city to me, business are closing permanently. It's a trickle down effect, if small business close, employees don't have wages anymore, and you can't expect the government to simply fund your lifestyle forever. College students don't have any companies to market their skills to because the old workers are holding on to their jobs. I expect property sale values will be half of what they were 2 months ago, although the states will be raising the valuations and property taxes to try to compensate for their expenditures regarding Covid-19. The more this drags out, the worse the economy will get. Guess we will just have to get use to it.

MOO

these are indeed terrible numbers. I wonder how good their health systems are? Apparently it's pretty good. However they have a very large elderly population.

Terrible latest numbers of people from France:

    • 56,489 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in France (+4,861)
    • 4,032 deaths in hospitals (+509)
    • 24,639 people in hospital with the virus (+1,882)
    • 6,017 patients are in intensive care (+452). Of those in intensive care, 34% are aged younger than 60 years, 60% between 60 and 80 years and 80 patients aged younger than 30 years)
    • 10,934 people in France treated for the coronavirus have recovered and returned home (+1,490)

And just think of the people stuck in those tiny rooms some of which don't even have windows. There was a couple on the news a while ago that were on one of the ships, and have a room with no windows, and haven't been out of the room once in at least a week. I'm claustrophobic and would be literally climbing the wall and completely stir crazy. Horrifying to even think about.
