An EXCELLENT World Health Organization presser to explain much today. MOO I was listening while working in the yard - transcript will be up tomorrow. In the first 3-20 threads we posted daily and that is how MANY of us knew what was to come, and what is going on behind the scenes. This today is one of those... as are most for those that don't follow.

Coronavirus: Government 'doesn't expect' to relax COVID-19 lockdown this week

The government does not expect to relax or lift the coronavirus lockdown later this week, Dominic Raab has said.

The foreign secretary, who is deputising for Prime Minister Boris Johnson as he recovers from the coronavirus, said there are some "positive signs" from the data that show "we are starting to win this struggle".

But he warned: "We are still not past the peak."

The stringent restrictions, imposed last month in order to try to halt the spread of the virus, are widely expected to be extended later this week.

Ministers have said they want to be certain that the UK is past the peak of the epidemic before they ease the conditions of the lockdown.

But how would the EKG taken before the drug was given reveal this risk? If higher doses of the drug, per Brazil study linked earlier in this thread, CAUSES arrhythmias, I don't understand how an EKG done before starting the drug would provide this information. If you have clarifying info, I'd be glad to see it.
Could you link the study again? Has Brazil had many cases yet? I'd like to have a look at that.

South Korea will send 600,000 Covid-19 test kits to the US

South Korea will begin sending Covid-19 testing kits to the US as soon as tomorrow afternoon, an official with South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs told CNN.

[...]

South Korea’s ability to test large numbers of people in a short period of time has been a major contributing factor in its success in combating the virus.

New York governor: Hospitalization curve continues to flatten

"Here's the good news: The curve continues to flatten," he said. "It appears we have a plateau."

[...]

Gov. Cuomo also noted that there are still about 2,000 people coming into the hospital system daily.

More than 10,000 people in New York have died from coronavirus

[...]

There were 671 deaths on Sunday, Cuomo said. He noted that was "not as bad as it has been in the past."

Gov. Cuomo: Outbreak is "like watching a fire going through dry grass with a strong wind"

[...]

"This is like watching a fire going through dry grass with a strong wind," he said. "And it’s blowing the fire, and a couple embers wind up on one side of the field and embers start to catch fire and that’s a cluster, and you have to run over to those embers and stamp them out right away before they grow."

Here's what Gov. Cuomo says about "reopening" New York

[...]

"We never turned off the economy," he said. "We turned it way, way down."
The governor said that while this is happening, officials will monitor infection rates, saying it's "a delicate balance."

He added that he is not "interested in political opinions," and he will lean on advice from experts.

New York governor: "The worst is over" if we stay smart

[...]

“If you isolate, if you take the precautions, your family won’t get infected. We can control the spread. Feel good about that,” he said at a coronavirus briefing today.
However, Cuomo warned New Yorkers need to "continued to be smart."

“The worst is over. Yeah, if we continue to be smart going forward. Because remember we have the hand on that valve. You turn that valve too fast, you will see that number jump right back," he added.

Northeast governors will discuss a "geographically coordinated" plan of reopening, Cuomo says

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he will be joined by other governors an announce a "geographically coordinated" plan of reopening this afternoon.

He said he has been in close contact with his New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Rhode Island counterparts over the past few weeks on a variety of coronavirus issues that impact the northeast region.

Congress will likely remain on standby during pandemic, sources say

The Senate is currently scheduled to come back next week — but senators and aides say there’s a good chance this could change and they expect official announcements later this week.

[...]

The House won’t come back to session unless members need to vote on legislation, according to leadership aides, and they’ll be given 24 hours notice if they have to return to the Capitol.

[...]

Thursday is the next pro forma session in the Senate, and a source tells CNN that a decision could be made by then.

WHO warns the number of coronavirus cases will decrease slower than they increased

[...]

“While Covid-19 accelerates very fast, it decelerates much more slowly. In other words, the way down is much slower than the way up,” Tedros said.

Speaking on Monday in Geneva, Tedros said as countries consider lifting their social distancing measures, they need to be careful.

“That means control measures must be lifted slowly and with control. It cannot happen all at once. Control measures can only be lifted if the right public health measures are in place," he said.

Many antibody tests for coronavirus are "junk," former CDC director says

Right now, Frieden said, “there are many tests on the market and many of them – now that I can speak very freely that I’m not in the government – many of them are junk.”

[...]

Only one coronavirus antibody test is currently authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration. The agency, though, has released guidance allowing unauthorized antibody tests to be distributed during the pandemic.

UK stay-at-home order is not expected to ease this week

[...]

The government’s coronavirus task force will meet this week to discuss the measures but Dominic Raab said that there will be “no changes to measures in place at that point.”

Speaking at a daily coronavirus press briefing, Raab said the country is “still not past the peak of the virus.”

[...]

"Masks are not an alternative to lockdown," WHO official says

Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of the World Health Organization’s health emergencies program, said as the world considers getting back to normal, it’s important to remember that "masks are not an alternative to lockdown."

Ryan continued: “Everything we do in public health or in health and policy affects something else. So the pressures on people to go back to work are going to be very strong and very appropriate, but we don't want people having to make difficult choices — and in some ways think that putting a mask on — is the same as staying home and reporting the fact that you're sick to authorities."

In March, the Oklahoma City Police Department received 3,129 calls related to domestic violence, up 11% from March 2019. April is already worse. From April 1 through 8, the department received 859 domestic, a 15% increase over the same period last year.

The Tulsa Police Department reported 1,779 calls in March, up 4%. Lt. Clay Asbill, who heads the department’s family violence unit, declined to provide additional data, saying his staff is “too busy.”

Kim Garrett, chief executive officer of Palomar, Oklahoma City’s family justice center, said families are cooped up at home together without breaks from each other, which increases tension and can lead to violence.

Garrett said more elderly victims have come forward since the pandemic began.

Advocates say abusers are taking advantage of the pandemic by telling victims that shelters and services are closed or threatening a victim with arrest if they leave their home during a shelter-in-place order, even to get help. Neither is true.

“We’re open and we’re here to help,” said Tracy Lyall, executive director of Domestic Violence Intervention Services in Tulsa. “Things might look a little different right now, but we’re not going anywhere.”

Kids at Risk

Department spokeswoman Casey White said most reports of abuse and neglect come from teachers. But most teachers aren’t able to check up on their students now, which is a concern, she said.

Many child-care facilities have also closed, and with more families staying home in compliance with local guidelines, abuse and neglect are more difficult to detect.

Reports of abuse dropped by nearly half from March 1 to April 6, according to the human services department, which operates a hotline. But the reports coming in are more severe.

Garrett, of Palomar, said reports of child strangulation are up.

May is usually a busy time because victims with children wait until school is out to move, and tax refunds provide the cash some need to escape their abuser, Hill said. But schools closed unexpectedly last month, leaving little time for victims to plan. The extended tax filing deadlines mean a longer wait for refunds.

Many victims leave while their batterer is at work. But with many working from home or without jobs because of the pandemic, victims are likely feeling stuck, Hill said.

“Victims are cut off from the outside even more than usual,” Hill said. “They might have church families or friends who could have helped them get out and they’re not doing that right now.”

It’s like we are getting on top of the main fire but someone is lighting spot fires everywhere.
They keep bringing in plane loads of infected people from overseas and on ships here.
Charter flights are charged at $15,000 per seat and then into a 4 or 5 star hotel for 2-3 weeks all at our Govt’s expense.
They all had enough time to get home!

This virus will keep reigniting at this rate.
Rant over but c’mon!

I'm not seeing from the article that charter flights are charging $15,000 per seat. That seems super high.

I was able to find this msm about the cost of charter flights from Morocco to Canada.

"Air Canada is sending a plane Saturday that will ferry Canadians home from the North African nation to Montreal. Passengers will have to pay for this flight as it's a commercial flight — not a rescue flight chartered by the Canadian government. The cost of a ticket is $1,272 plus tax.

"Travellers can apply for up to $5,000 in financial support from the Canadian government to help with COVID-19-related travel disruptions. The loan must be repaid."

Ignore my post above as I have now found it from within the link that was posted. This is a direct link to the study.

Chloroquine diphosphate in two different dosages as adjunctive therapy of hospitalized patients with severe respiratory syndrome in the context of coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) infection: Preliminary safety results of a randomized, double-blinded, phase IIb clinical trial (CloroCovid-19 Study)

I interpret they stopped the higher dosage but continued with the lower dosage. And I think it is still ongoing with the lower dosage.

Me too! I took a socially-distanced solo walk yesterday in a neighborhood garden and sniffed the blooms....just to make sure I could. :)

My cousin is a pastor in the Netherlands. This Sunday, he live-streamed his communion service from the edge of a hyacinth field. The whole field was in full bloom with rows and rows of purple hyacinths. I could smell them from here in Canada.

Former coworker was in line at Walmart for pickup - watching people go in. She counted 98 people with only 4 wearing masks of any type. Laughing, talking, like nothing was going on. Harris County TX .

That sounds fabulous, I love Hyacinths. There have been some absolutely beautiful sermons and services with all kinds of lovely scenery over Easter. I would love to see this done every year.

Trying to stay positive. My jasmine is in bloom so I go out and smell it to make sure my sense of smell is working. It’s strong enough to even get though my allergies. Bought a new dress online to wear out once this is over.

I have to travel next week for work. Driving again, not happy about it but I don’t have much choice. Going to use my precautions and hope they are good enough. Especially not thrilled to be traveling during the projected peak of this in TX. I’ll bring my food with but still need to use public restrooms on a 6 hour drive and gas pumps.

This I believe. I’ve seen one person wearing a mask when out and about. About to go into public to drop off masks to ship for friends and family. Post Office and FedEx location, I would be I see only a couple of masks and that will be at the post office.

grabbed wrong quote, this was about the lack of PPE in Harris County.
