Definitely worthwhile to watch this 20-minute video, and good chart to review at the beginning for what is a normal temperature, low grade fever, high grade fever, dangerous fever level, etc. This information is right at the beginning of the video and there are two charts that Dr. Campbell shows, one in celsius and one one farenheit. Also toward the end of the video he talks about research on fever and cytokine storm that we have been hearing about with COVID-19, although he makes it clear that this is not research specfically on COVID-19, but on other viruses. Definitely worth coming back to this when you have time and watching the whole thing. MOO.

UK coronavirus death toll tops 10,000

Over 10k deaths

"The UK has recorded 737 new coronavirus-related hospital deaths, taking the total number to 10,612.

It comes after one of the government's senior scientific advisers said the UK is likely to be among the worst-affected European countries.

In response, Business Secretary Alok Sharma said countries were on "different trajectories"."

(My comment-
Percentage is dropping though as this has only gone up by 7.5%. )

Why Denmark is taking steps to open up again

Denmark is about to make its first move to relax restrictions imposed to fight coronavirus.

From Wednesday, children aged 11 and younger return to schools and nurseries, after a month of closures.

It's among the first European countries aiming to put the lockdown into gradual reverse, just as it was one of the first to impose restrictions.

"It's important we don't keep Denmark closed for longer than we need to," said Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, as she announced the move last week.

The spread of coronavirus appears to be under control and the government wants to get the economy going again.

Analysis: How do we get out of lockdown?

This is a long article so I have just copied a small bit below-

Which lockdown measures could be lifted?
Some restrictions have less of an effect on the virus than others.

"There are certain interactions and activities that are overall less risky," said Dr Kucharski.

He argues lifting different restrictions can be put into three broad categories - those with low, moderate and substantial risk of increasing transmission of the virus.

Low risk includes exercising outdoors, which has been restricted in some countries.

Moderate would include letting some non-essential shops re-open or having occasional gatherings with people outside the household.

Substantial increases could come from lifting advice to work from home, reopening schools or isolating sick people and quarantining households.

"I think the order things went in will be reflected in the order things will be lifted," he says.

But which measures to lift will be a difficult balancing act. It will have to be a combination of the benefits to society and the economy against the impact on the spread of the virus.

Good article, with link in article to original research paper in the journal Nature. Helps to better understand how COVID-19 virus replicates in the throat, and perhaps why it was suggested early on by Dr. James Robb, UC San Diego, to take zinc lozenges if you begin to feel any cold-like symptoms. He suggested that if you feel this beginning, then it is best to lie down and let the lozenges dissolve in the back of your throat and nasopharynyx and to use as directed. I am not using zinc regularly, due to its potential toxic effects, but have some on hand if needed. MOO.

JMO
I agree that Zinc and Zinc type lozenges are a good thing to have on hand at the first signs of an infection. Over the counter products like Coldeeze and Zicam have zinc in them and whenever I have used them in the past for normal colds, I have always felt they did help somewhat. In my experience, they never made it go totally away but they did seem to help keep the symptoms down a little better than if I had not used the products at all.

Just watch the recommended dosage on the instructions if you do decide to use zinc products like these. There are daily dosage limits in the instructions.

I’d be interested to know how many cases we actually have in the UK, must be a few times the reported rate since we only test in hospital (which in turn makes the case:death ratio look high as most people are pretty poorly by that point)

It’ll be years before the scientists / medics get a full picture of all the global statistics.

Do any of you remember the date when you personally became aware of this virus, at first vaguely in the news, and not yet in your area?

In So. California, I know I was already aware of the virus but as only a distant threat.

On Jan. 23--I saw a disgusting video of a woman eating Bat Soup and mentioned it in an email.

On Feb. 9-- around the Chinese New Year celebration here, I got on an elevator after a bunch of Chinese people got off on their way to the celebration, and it crossed my mind. I was hearing things and beginning to worry.

By Feb. 14th-- I was starting to feel cautious. I went to a gathering and it crossed my mind again.

By Feb 22nd-- I wondered if it was safe to babysit my granddaughter.

By March 3rd-- I finally was convinced I should be careful, but I never imagined this full-blown Pandemic. Still seems unreal.

When did you become aware of something happening elsewhere and then in your backyard?

I have followed the virus since January 10th, and on January 24th was shocked when I realized that there was a thread here on WS and posted January 24th post #46 on Thread #1. I did my pandemic $422 shopping trip on February 23rd and this can last myself 6 months, including TP lol. I also went to the Dollar Tree and cleared them out of UHT milk as someone suggested here, and purchased N95 masks from Sherwin Williams per suggestion of someone on the threads.

Can I get tested?

This is a link about testing from one of the articles I just posted. It is not very encouraging. We (the UK) bought 3.5 million antibody tests that don't work well.. Testing for the virus has to be sent off to labs for analysis.

Testing is not yet available for most people.

At the moment, most tests are reserved for seriously ill patients in hospital.

They can do diagnostic tests in hospital.

It doesn't sound good and I cannot see how they will get to 100k tests daily.

Nearly 40% of coronavirus deaths in Colorado linked to nursing homes, long-term care facilities

“ Ouslander said isolation isn’t good for older people, particularly those with cognitive impairment, but it’s a “necessary evil” while the virus rages.

“I think the short- and long-term effects of isolation are pale compared to a swift and unnecessary death,” he said.”

[...]

“In one case at his facility, a new resident was ordered to stay in quarantine for 10 days to ensure she wasn’t carrying the virus, but there was nothing staff could do when she refused, he said.

“She was rolling around in her motorized wheelchair, telling staff and residents she hopes she gets them sick,” he said. “I’m responsible for the result, but my hands are tied.””

[...]

“The administrator said he’s frustrated with a lack of help and resources like protective equipment from the state. Most staff are still coming to work and doing their best, even though they don’t have N95 masks to protect them while treating residents who could be sick, he said.“

DBM Cat on keyboard

I have been wanting to post about my favorite comic strip--"Breaking Cat News," by Georgia Dunn. This strip is a treat for cat lovers, but I recommend it for anyone. You can find the strip online on gocomics, and our newspaper carries it. Georgia is a wonderful watercolorist, and her strips are a delight visually.

If you go to gocomics online today, the Easter strip is a "search and find" game looking for 33 Easter eggs in the picture. Fun for children and anyone! (I had to count the eggs twice to get all 33.) Today's strip includes many regular cast members, including "the woman" (based on Georgia herself), "the man" based on her husband, the boy and girl based on their real children, 4 cats based on their 4 real cats, and 4 "robber mice."

I looked for another place on Websleuths to post about this beautiful, warm, funny comic but wasn't sure where I should post it. Please let me know if you have a suggestion!

I was aware of it from the news about China and the cruise ship Diamond Princess off Japan. Started following the news more closely when Italy went into lockdown and started following on the thread here when we had our first deaths in UK mid March and then went on lockdown ourselves 24th March.

Drone used as part of experimental disinfection operation
A drone was used to disinfect a public area in Cannes, France, on April 10 as part of an experimental project to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.

They should have just put a padlock on her wheelchair wheels. Oops it was electric. So they could have secretly disconnected the battery.

UK likely to be worst-affected country in Europe, expert fears

[...]

"The numbers in the UK have continued to go up, I do hope that we're coming close to the number of new infections reducing, and in a week or two the number of people of people needing hospital reducing," he said, adding that he hoped the number of UK deaths would plateau and start to fall in a couple of weeks.

Farrar also said a second or third wave of coronavirus was "probably inevitable."

He said he thought a vaccine will be available during autumn this year, but that it will not be available on the scale required to protect people around the world.

"If we put their efforts together, we can develop both the vaccine and treatment in the fastest time possible," Park said at a briefing on Sunday. Such cooperation would cut down the time taken for administrative reasons and provide infrastructure or resources needed, Park said.

Race for a vaccine: This week, a study published in The Lancet medical journal warned that coronavirus lockdowns across the globe should not be completely lifted until a vaccine for the disease is found.

China's draconian restrictions on daily life appear to have halted the first wave of Covid-19 across much of the country, but the researchers used mathematical modeling to show that premature lifting of measures could result in a sweeping second wave of infection.

Spain begins gradual steps towards loosening coronavirus restrictions

People who can’t work at home and whose places of employment are reopening may return to work after the Easter holidays. The move is aimed at such sectors as construction and manufacturing – but non-essential retail outlets, bars and places of entertainment must remain closed. Restaurants can only offer take-out. Hairdressers will only be able go to clients’ homes but can’t open their salons and banks will have a minimum service with only a few branches open.

The government announced over the weekend that police would begin handing out 10 million protective masks at metro stations and other transport hubs to workers after the Easter break, while reiterating guidance on social distancing and regular washing of hands.

Italian prime minister offers message of hope, saying "we will be able to recover soon"

“We miss the smiles of relatives, the hugs of friends, the beautiful traditions of our country, the handshakes in the church, in the square, at the bar. The sacrifices that each of us makes on this important Sunday are a gesture of authentic commitment to what really matters and that we will be able to recover soon," Conte added.

Reopening the US will not be "one size fits all," Fauci says

[...]

"It is not going to be a light switch that we say, okay, it is now June, July or whatever, click, the light switch goes back on," Fauci said. "It's going to be depending where you are in the country, the nature of the outbreak that you have already experienced and the threat of an outbreak that you may not have experienced."

Fauci said he believes this approach is needed to try to prevent a "rebound" or second wave of coronavirus cases. He said there will be people who do get infected after restrictions are loosened, but by reopening gradually, there will be time to identify those cases and isolate them.

I agree about waiting for a vaccine. The risk of it starting up again is scary to think about because it spreads so quickly before anyone realizes what has happened.

I'm also not thrilled with some of the ridiculous ideas of tracking everyone's movements by following their cell phone.

Now let's get one thr0ugh those vaccine trials quickly.
