Coronavirus COVID-19 - Global Health Pandemic #46

I had surgery on 1/28/2020 and had to stay overnight in the hospital. The next morning the local newspaper (that I received with my breakfast tray) had a headline saying that a possible Coronavirus case was at that hospital. I can’t remember the exact wording of the headline, but the gist of the story is that a person had come back from China and had some respiratory illness so they were being evaluated. It fortunately turned out to be nothing. My surgeon and I both commented on how we wanted people to take the risk of influenza more seriously and worry less about the Coronavirus because the flu was a bigger threat in the US at that time.

My kids’ Spring Break was March 9-13 and we got a call on the 12th informing us classes would be resuming as usual on Monday the 16th. The next day on the 13th we received a call that they had decided to close schools for 2 weeks, so there would be no classes through 3/29. The following Tuesday 3/17, the Governor announced schools would be closed for the remainder of the school year in our state. I was *shocked*! I have major problems getting my daughter up and out the door on time and some days can’t get her to school at all...so in a certain way I was relieved, but I was also scared because I knew this was big.

My sister-in-law was able to give us 3 N-95 masks a couple days ago. Her husband works in an industry where they use them so they had a few. I am a cancer patient so I am so grateful to have that now, as I am due to start radiation daily in about a week. I certainly wouldn’t have thought this would be happening back on 1/28.

so glad you were able to get some N-95's
good luck with radiation - I'm a cancer survivor so p.m. me if you need a shoulder

I hope things go well for you and your upcoming treatments. Are you going to receive them from home or in the hospital?

My very good friend, who also my son's mother-in-law, is receiving radiation treatments now. Her first one was in a hospital in Los Angeles, in early March, but after just one day, they decided to postpone briefly and send her back home.

Since then they have her receiving them at home, 3x a week, with a nurse who comes for the afternoon.

My friend says she is relieved to be home instead of in the hospital during the treatments. She feels like she can relax more and has more control over her immediate environment.

This darn virus makes everything so darn complicated....

how do they do radiation at home? I was scanned through a huge machine

O/T thanks to those that mentioned ESALON. I just placed an order and hopefully it will be
super easy. I am regretting big time that I cancelled my last hair appointment in late February, thinking I can go a few more weeks. A few weeks has turned into a few months.

Haha... my grandmother told me my mother ordered ham from Omaha Steaks 2 weeks (!) ago, and I was filled with admiration at her foresight!

I myself have no idea what I'm going to eat for Easter dinner right now; but I have to come up with something, as my sister keeps asking me what it will be. Maybe pigs in blankets. ;). I think she's getting a share of the ham, in a porch handoff TBD.

Set out whatever you traditionally do. China and crystal. Paper plates and plastic cups. Does not matter who is home or who is not able you join you at the table.
Then prepare whatever you have. Cereal and milk. Or canned BBQ beans and franks. Ham if you thought before the pandemic and ordered it. Just keep the tradition alive, if you can, but if you cannot, think that you will skip the coronavirus visit. And live to share another holiday, soon.
Hope is what we’re celebrating. Hope that your family cherishes the ham, that you cherish health, that we all live to celebrate another holiday.

Good morning everyone and Happy Easter! My husband and I will have Easter dinner 2020 style. Baked potatoes smothered in canned chili and topped with shredded cheddar cheese. Paired with a vintage White Claw. :)
We’re having a big slab of ham, tater tots, sweet potato fries and some type of veg.......plus I’m baking the brownie mix I bought.

why are you saving dryer lint? (I don't garden normally)
I read somewhere to use it.......cut human hair is good for composting as well.

aww she's probably wishing on a star
someone needs to let her down gently I think

Maybe it can be thought of as a "save the date" invitation, and if the wedding can't go forward in-person, perhaps a virtual wedding will be possible for the guests, with the bride and groom together and the person officiating can also do it virtually. By now, or soon, there will probably be entrepreneurs who can make this happen in a very creative, innovative way, and she can still have her wedding date as planned, and quite memorable anniversary conversations. Her music, attire, etc. can remain the same. We are doing our spring commencement ceremony at our university as a virtual ceremony, and it's amazing what the company we are working with is able to do. Then later, perhaps at the first anniversary, she can hold a reception and dinner, if that was her plan, and if costs allow for that in her planning. Just some thoughts.

Ok, so y’all told me I could freeze my milk and let it thaw in the fridge. It’s been in the fridge 3 days now and is still full of ice. How long is this going to take?

"Boris Johnson discharged from hospital - BBC News" Boris Johnson discharged from hospital

"Downing Street said the PM would continue his recovery at his country residence, Chequers.

"On the advice of his medical team, the PM will not be immediately returning to work. He wishes to thank everybody at St Thomas' for the brilliant care he has received.

"All of his thoughts are with those affected by this illness," the statement added."

great news!

I wont even attempt a garden. I kill cactus. I share air space with a plant and it dies. Husband cares for the 2 plants we have. It would frustrate me to no end. Kudos to those of you taking it on and those of you who have been doing it before all the crazy.

I was thinking today of my plants in my office at work. I gave them a good watering on my last day at the office before leaving to work remotely, but that was March 12th.

I did not ever thinking of freezing milk. That is good to know. Can you also freeze Almond Milk?

Do any of you remember the date when you personally became aware of this virus, at first vaguely in the news, and not yet in your area?

In So. California, I know I was already aware of the virus but as only a distant threat.

On Jan. 23--I saw a disgusting video of a woman eating Bat Soup and mentioned it in an email.

On Feb. 9-- around the Chinese New Year celebration here, I got on an elevator after a bunch of Chinese people got off on their way to the celebration, and it crossed my mind. I was hearing things and beginning to worry.

By Feb. 14th-- I was starting to feel cautious. I went to a gathering and it crossed my mind again.

By Feb 22nd-- I wondered if it was safe to babysit my granddaughter.

By March 3rd-- I finally was convinced I should be careful, but I never imagined this full-blown Pandemic. Still seems unreal.

When did you become aware of something happening elsewhere and then in your backyard?

That's an interesting question, @Curious Me, and does justice to your screen name.

For some reason, every time I think of first becoming aware of Coronavirus, I think of Kobe Bryant. I had to go back to my calendar now to see why.
I had lunch with a friend on Jan. 26, and when I got home I got a call about Kobe's death. The media coverage was endless, so that stayed in my mind. But that day was Lunar New Year, I think.
Every week for years I have gone to my favorite salon for hair and nails. It's owned and run by immigrants from China. I think JFK airport had already started screening for people coming here from China, so something was starting to bubble up in the back of my mind. I went to my salon as usual, wished everyone a Happy New Year, and I think I asked if anyone had relatives flying in. But it was only a very vague concern.
By February concern in NYC was growing, but looking at my calendar I was still attending all the retiree and social activities that I normally do. Art class, yoga class, dinner out. I still saw the guy I've been seeing on Valentine's Day. Still carried on with my usual agenda. People were starting to be wary of going to Chinese-owned businesses, so I made it a point to continue going to the salon. My heart broke for them, because business had fallen off dramatically. Even so, I think I just had my hair done, not my nails, because I already was squeamish about holding hands (with anyone, not just people from China).
I was hearing a lot of talk that since Wuhan was on lockdown, supplies of medications were going to get scarce, because they are manufactured there. I called my pulmonologist to get an early refill of my COPD meds. The receptionist said to her colleague, "oh this is going to be a big deal. This is the third call this morning of people wanting their prescriptions early." She sounded annoyed.
By the first week of March I still went out with friends, still saw family, still had my taxes done on March 5th and had lunch with my cousin on March 6th, which was a Friday. I also went to the supermarket and stocked up on food and toilet paper. I already had hand sanitizer and that was starting to be a big deal.
I must have heard some news that weekend, because I had a film studies class that was going to start on March 9th, but I called to cancel. Then
I think two days later, all of the classes and programs I attend shut down. I visited with friends on March 10th, and that's the last time I've been out of the house. I cancelled Atlantic City where I had reservations for March 25th and 26th, cancelled plans for Vegas in May.
We started talking to my parents about the very dramatic possibility that they may not be able to fly up for Passover. They did have to cancel, of course, as they are 86 and 87.
I know I'm leaving out some things, but of course everything here has been closed for awhile now. I'm grateful to be retired from teaching, but very concerned that my grandchildren aren't getting a proper education.
