US may have to endure social distancing until 2022 if no vaccine is quickly found, scientists predict

[...]

That's according to researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, who published their findings in the journal Science on Tuesday. ...

[...]

"Intermittent distancing may be required into 2022 unless critical care capacity is increased substantially or a treatment or vaccine becomes available," they wrote in their report. "Even in the event of apparent elimination, SARS-CoV-2 surveillance should be maintained since a resurgence in contagion could be possible as late as 2024."

The Harvard team's projections also indicate that the virus would come roaring back fairly quickly once restrictions were lifted.

Stay-at-home order would not have prevented virus outbreak at food plant, governor says

[...]

“I've seen some national stories written that a shelter-in-place would have prevented this outbreak at Smithfield. That is absolutely false,” Noem said.
The plant accounts for 4% to 5% of US pork production and employs about 3,700 people, according to Smithfield.

The governor said that even with a broad order, the facility would have stayed open due to its status as a major food supplier. “This is a critical infrastructure job plant,” she said.

Trump's name will be added to coronavirus stimulus checks

[...]

Two senior officials told the Post that the decision would probably set back the delivery date on the first set of paper checks -- potentially slowing a process that could already take up to 20 weeks. But the Treasury Department denied the claim, with a department spokesperson assuring the Post that the first batch of checks was still slated to go out next week.

"Economic Impact Payment checks are scheduled to go out on time and exactly as planned -- there is absolutely no delay whatsoever," the Treasury spokesperson told the paper.

Germany records highest number of coronavirus related deaths in a single day

Germany recorded its highest number of coronavirus-related deaths in a single day on Tuesday, with 285 people dying of the virus in 24 hours.

New infections in the country are significantly down, however, according to the country's center for disease control, the Robert Koch Institute.

US Forces Japan declares public emergency for all of the country due to coronavirus

The commander of the US Forces Japan (USFJ) has declared a public health emergency for all forces in the country amid the novel coronavirus outbreak, the USFJ said in a statement Wednesday.

The order, which will remain in effect through May 15, "ensures commanders possess the necessary authorities to enforce compliance with health protection measures" on those who live and work on US installations.

Bill Gates says halting WHO funding is "as dangerous as it sounds"

[...]

"Halting funding for the World Health Organization during a world health crisis is as dangerous as it sounds," Gates said in a tweet on his official account.

“Their work is slowing the spread of COVID-19 and if that work is stopped no other organization can replace them,” he said, adding the world needs the WHO “now more than ever.”

Coronavirus takes a serious turn in Russia, and Putin no longer radiates confidence

[...]

What's happening in Russia?: The trend line speaks for itself. While Russia has comparatively few cases compared with the United States or the hardest-hit European countries, the number of confirmed cases has surged in recent days. On Monday, Russia reported a record one-day rise in cases, with 2,558 confirmed over the previous 24 hours.

On Tuesday, Russia hit a fresh record: 2,774 confirmed cases. And Putin is coming in for serious criticism over his handling of the crisis.

The world hasn't seen a recession this bad since the 1930s. The recovery is far from certain

The coronavirus pandemic is plunging the global economy into its deepest slump since the Great Depression of the 1930s and governments and health officials must work together to prevent an even worse outcome.

That's the stark warning from the International Monetary Fund, which said on Tuesday there was a risk of the recession extending into 2021 if policymakers fail to coordinate a global response to the virus.

German foreign minister says WHO must be funded

[...]

Heiko Maas, linking to a German TV news report of Trump’s announcement, said in the tweet that there was "no use allocating blame" for the pandemic:

"The virus knows no borders. We have to cooperate tightly against #Covid 19. It is one of the best investments to strengthen the #UN, and the underfinanced #WHO, for example in the development and distribution of tests and vaccines."

Trump will harm global coronavirus fight by pulling WHO funding, China warns

[...]

"At present, the global pandemic situation is grim and is at a critical moment," China's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian told reporters on Wednesday, adding that Trump's move would "weaken WHO’s abilities and undermine global cooperation on combating the pandemic."

"It will affect all countries in the world, including the United States -- especially those with vulnerable abilities," he said. "We urge the US to fulfill its responsibilities and obligations, and support WHO to lead the international combat against the pandemic.”

8:05 am: Trump’s decision to withdraw WHO funding prompts international criticism

U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement that he is going to withdraw U.S. funding for the WHO has provoked criticism from around the world.

Among those voicing opposition was philanthropist Bill Gates, who called the decision “as dangerous as it sounds.” Germany’s Foreign Minister Heiko Maas tweeted that “blaming does not help,” adding, “The virus knows no borders” and he said the WHO was already underfunded. The European Union’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said he “deeply regretted” the decision.

The world’s fastest supercomputer has been created from volunteers loaning spare time on their home PCs to fold proteins, a scientific task that could prove instrumental in the fight against the coronavirus.
upload_2020-4-15_7-25-33.jpeg

According to Folding@Home, the organisation that runs the distributed computing effort, the combined power of the network broke 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 operations per second – or one “exaflop” – on 25 March.

That made it six times more powerful than the current world’s fastest traditional supercomputer, the IBM Summit, which is used for scientific research at the US’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory. By Monday, it had more than doubled that, hitting a new record of 2.4 exaflops, faster than the top 500 traditional supercomputers combined, thanks to almost 1 million new members of the network.

The breakthrough reflects a huge spike in support for the Folding@Home project. Backers run a simple piece of software on their home computer, which then downloads and performs small tasks to help determine the physical structure of proteins.

In a letter to the force with an underlying tone, the minister said: “Kindness, discretion and sensitivity are very important in these days. We are all living a situation we have never experienced before. Remember that your behaviour and the attitude you show to the public needs to be exemplary.”

“Your zeal in carrying out your duty has not gone unnoticed and I want to remind everyone that police officers are every day on the front line fighting to keep us safe and making sure we do not further endanger our lives by getting out of our houses,” he said.

“I have seen first-hand how your sense of duty is driving you during your routine checks, which are making sure that the decrees issued by the government are being respected and, while I’m calling on all of you to keep an ethical behaviour, I want to thank each and every one of you as well.”

Good news to report!

The husband of a school acquaintance, in his early 60’s, was in New Orleans in mid March and shortly thereafter came down with Covid 19. He eventually was hospitalized and placed on a vent (20 days!) as well as dialysis.

My school friend has been giving updates on FB. She posted late yesterday afternoon that he was off the vent, breathing on his own! A brain MRI showed no damage. He was able to sit up and on the side of his bed, though still very weak, and following simple commands! From what I have read, it is almost unheard of to be able to survive after being ventilated that long.

Talk about an Easter miracle!

The coronavirus pandemic will bring about the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, the IMF predicted Tuesday in its latest World Economic Outlook — and that is its optimistic outlook.

The state of play: The Fund admitted in a rare show of doomsaying that damage could be far worse than its projections and that while there's some chance they could be positively surprised, "downside risks prevail."

Why it matters: The organization's baseline expectation is for a recession "far worse" than the 2008 financial crisis, with global GDP contracting by 3% this year. That's a drastic downgrade from its forecast of 6.3% growth in January, and 30 times worse than the economic decline in 2008.

  • "This is a truly global crisis, as no country is spared," IMF chief economist Gita Gopinath said during a media briefing.
The big picture: Global GDP is expected to face a cumulative loss of about $9 trillion — larger than the economies of Japan and Germany combined. That is what happens in the IMF's rosy scenario in which the coronavirus is contained quickly and the world swiftly resumes economic activity.

  • "The pandemic may not recede in second half of this year, leading to longer containment periods, worsening financial conditions and further breakdowns in global supply chains," Gopinath warned.
  • "In such cases, global growth will fall even further, by an additional 3% in 2020, and if the health crisis rolls over into 2021 it can reduce the level of global GDP by an additional 8% compared to the baseline."
Where it stands: The IMF is recommending coordinated fiscal stimulus, a moratorium on debt payment and debt restructurings, and additional financing and grants for the world's poorest countries.

The information in the video comes from the Centers for Disease Control, which made a handy infographic describing the differences between the N95 respirators and surgical masks. It’s also released a guide on cloth face coverings, including how to make one at home.

Making masks has been one way the public has been able to help the fight against the spread of COVID-19. One Pennsylvania woman has already made thousands for healthcare workers.

One thing to remember with masks is to always take them off properly. You need to remember that the front could be contaminated, so you don’t want to touch it. Instead, remove the mask through the ties or loops that kept it on your face. Also be sure to wash your hands immediately after taking the mask off. You can see some other tips on the best way to wear and care for homemade masks here.

Speaking to US host Howard Stern on his Sirius XM radio show, McCartney said: "I really hope that this will mean that the Chinese government will say, 'OK, guys, we have really got to get super hygienic around here.'

"Let's face it, it is a little bit medieval eating bats."

Suggesting that wet markets were also to blame for past outbreaks including SARS (Severe acute respiratory syndrome) and avian flu (bird flu), McCartney said: : "It wouldn't be so bad if this is the only thing it seems like you can blame on those wet markets.

"It seems like SARS, avian flu, all sorts of other stuff that has afflicted us, and what's it for? For these quite medieval practices. They need to clean up their act. This may lead to it. If this doesn't, I don't know what will."

He said: "I think it makes a lot of sense ... when you've got the obscenity of some of the stuff that's going on there and what comes out of it, they might as well be letting off atomic bombs. It's affecting the whole world.

"I understand that part of it is going to be, 'People have done it for ever, this is the way we do things'. But they did slavery forever, too. You've got to change things at some point."

McCartney will be playing at the One World: Together At Home concert on Saturday 18 April, organised by Global Citizen and the World Health Organisation in support of healthcare workers on the frontlines of the #COVID19 crisis.

    BREAKINGGlobal cases reach two million
Another day and another grim statistic, as the number of confirmed cases across the world reaches two million.

That's according to figures from Johns Hopkins University, which has been tracking infections and deaths around the world.

More than 600,000 cases have been recorded in the US alone, while 128,000 people have died globally.

The true number of infections is likely to be much higher, as levels of testing varies by country.

It's less than two weeks since the world reach a million confirmed cases.

<modsnip: quoted post was removed>

I haven't seen reports anywhere that the US or any states therein will be going back to work as usual. It will be gradual, baby steps IMO. Including social distancing measures. It's scary for sure but IMO it's not a case of everyone going back to work immediately.
