Oh yes, it certainly would. That would have been an international travesty. In the midst of this pandemic, any major player that shuts the WHO down receives great condemnation from the rest of the world.

I forgot about this element. I didn't really get it until it happened to my dad.

My dad was 99 and had to have surgery and during the surgery they had to put him on a ventilator - not for several days, just about 12 hours or so. But, to put anyone on a ventilator (all the people you're reading about) they have to be under anesthesia. So dad's experience was brief.

This man was frail but **sharp** before this event. He sometimes confused people's names, all the things we older people do, but he could tell you exactly which pass the Germans hid out in, when they came across from Austria into Italy, and which birds disappeared from our Valley back in 1967, and how there were suddenly more rattlesnakes.

After his surgery, he seemed to have profound dementia. He never got back to "real" reality, and the doctor said, "Oh, yes, this is the most common outcome of this surgery." Because of his age? She said "Well, can be any age, but over 70, it's pronounced." Why didn't she tell me? "I told you there were many risks and asked what you thought your dad wanted." I had asked dad - he wanted the surgery.

It was the worst part of his dying process. We should NEVER have let him have surgery/get on a ventilator/receive anesthesia. He died a bit later, but he would have been SO much happier dying in the hospital, as he wished to do.

Exactly, that's why Trump cut funding and launched an investigation into the WHO.

The WHO shouldn't have gone along with China's claims and done more to stop the pandemic before it started. JMO.

I'm in my early sixties and I've made sure DH knows that if I get this virus and land in hospital/ICU I do not want to be put on a ventilator.

This is definitely a concern for me and my husband, now in our mid 70s. Once intubated, people need to stay on the vent until they get better, which could take weeks, or until they die. And after being on the vent, what condition would our brains be in? Would we have permanent brain damage and be a terrible burden for our loved ones? In that case I sure wouldn't want to survive. This is difficult to think about.

It was awful. I of course had his health directive, instructions and durable power of attorney. Me - just one person. And ultimately I had to sign for that decision. I was thinking about "anesthesia risk" as a statistic, I did not know that nearly all seniors who come out of longer use of anesthesia/intubation suddenly crumble and look like Alzheimer's patients. My dad's great fear. Ever. His greatest fear - and I had signed papers to expose him to it.

At the same time, the darned rascal insisted on doing everything himself, as much as he could, so he fell and broke a hip. He was SO ready to go. Yet, since he had heard that some people had had their hips fixed and knew someone who had (my mom), his belief in that procedure swelled up and he asked for it. Of course I consented.

But neither he nor I were informed of nothing more than a high risk of complications. Neither of us knew that the main complication was dementia.

Good news for those of you struggling with this: my dad, even at 99, still had some moments of lucidity and while he mostly thought he was back in his childhood (wonderful, really), he was always himself. His personality, even his sense of humor (not that he was joking, but his way of speaking implied we were to be happy and smile). He was himself (unlike the man in the bed next to him). So he sort of recovered from the intubation/anesthesia (again - they go together, at least at first and for quite a while).

But he was not physically or mentally able to live by himself. His cognitive issues were bad enough that a close relative had a really hard time not being recognized. I was prepared for that, but it was hard for me too. Fortunately, he chose to confuse me with someone he loved dearly, so that was good.

I’ve never worked for a company with a company pension plan and neither has hub.
A 401k - yes.
Got to have a hardship exception to get that 401k money out.
I can start drawing social security at 67 and a half and hub is later than me.
A lot of us have to work until we can draw social security - especially now since our 401k is a lot less. We had just met with our financial planner in January and thought we had a plan and would be ok.
Well - that’s shot all to heck now!

I feel you. I need another job (still downstream of 50), and at the worst of our recent decline my 401k had lost 37%. End of yesterday I was "only" down 21%, though, so there's something . I also had to go withdraw my Roth principal the other day for expenses, which was no fun. Hopefully the hemorrhaging stops soon .

Although would-be COVID-19 therapies like the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine and the failed Ebola drug remdesivir have drummed up excitement as potentially life-saving treatments, a comprehensive review of available data finds that it's still too early to tell.

The review, published in JAMA on April 13, 2020, summarizes what's currently known about medical therapies used to treat COVID-19, concluding that "no therapies have been shown effective to date."

They also found that there's no proven therapy to help ward off COVID-19 in patients who are not already infected.

"The article is a refreshing reminder that no therapy is yet proven to work, including drugs like chloroquine that we have heard so much about," said Dr. Kathryn Stephenson, director of the Center for Virology and Vaccine Research Clinical Trials Unit at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

Researchers at UT Southwestern analyzed evidence on major proposed COVID-19 treatments published by the end of March 2020 and written in English. They found no strong evidence that any potential COVID-19 therapy is effective.

Importance The pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) presents an unprecedented challenge to identify effective drugs for prevention and treatment. Given the rapid pace of scientific discovery and clinical data generated by the large number of people rapidly infected by SARS-CoV-2, clinicians need accurate evidence regarding effective medical treatments for this infection.

Observations No proven effective therapies for this virus currently exist. The rapidly expanding knowledge regarding SARS-CoV-2 virology provides a significant number of potential drug targets. The most promising therapy is remdesivir. Remdesivir has potent in vitro activity against SARS-CoV-2, but it is not US Food and Drug Administration approved and currently is being tested in ongoing randomized trials. Oseltamivir has not been shown to have efficacy, and corticosteroids are currently not recommended. Current clinical evidence does not support stopping angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers in patients with COVID-19.

Conclusions and Relevance The COVID-19 pandemic represents the greatest global public health crisis of this generation and, potentially, since the pandemic influenza outbreak of 1918. The speed and volume of clinical trials launched to investigate potential therapies for COVID-19 highlight both the need and capability to produce high-quality evidence even in the middle of a pandemic. No therapies have been shown effective to date.
