It came to the USA via Europe on the East coast. The first case in the USA was on January 21 from China. I don't have the link handy, but have posted it for moderators in the past.

The question is about Strain A in the USA, Strain B in Wuhan, Strain C came later. New mutations do not mean stronger.

Do you mean 1918 Pandemic, or 2020 Pandemic? Pin 1918 pandemic on Spain? That is impossible. Every country recognizes that Spain was merely reporting.
I was asking about the 1918 flu and how it got to the USA.

Coronavirus: Liverpool v Atletico Madrid virus link an 'interesting hypothesis'

This is interesting. It is known UK were late stopping some major sporting events. This Liverpool game was on 11 March. A week later we were being asked to social distance. A week after that we were in permanent lockdown.

Yes, some countries, like Italy /Spanish sports, held events after it was safe.

Interesting. Social distancing on March 18, lockdown on March 25. That was later than Canada, everyone was told to come home on March 18, mandatory self-isolation, lockdown based on self-governance.

Seems it happened everywhere around March 11 - March 25.

The UK approach was Prince William calling it a bit of hype, Prince Charles getting sick, Boris Johnson downplaying the risk, and Boris in ICU with special treatment and off work for 3 months. It appears to be out of hand in the UK, just like China, Italy, Spain, USA, don't know about the Middle East. The USA has given up, bit of a concern.

Sweden, Canada, Australia and perhaps other countries have told people to go home and stay home. That's what people are doing. They can walk pathways, shop for essentials, and stay home for now with a sustaining gov't income for 4 months.

They work from home if they can, if they can't the only thing that comes to mind is "viral load" in health care workers - beware of viral load even though we don't yet know that that means. I think it means that people are exposed repeatedly and eventually their viral load overcomes their very strong immune system and they're dead.
BoJo has not been off sick for 3 months and did not get special treatment as has been clear by interviews with the NZ nurse who clearly said she treats everyone the same.

How did he play down the risk and be off work sick with it for 3 months anyway?

We also had the 6 Nations Rugby tournament Feb - March. Countries were England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France and Italy.

Quite right. Thank you. While in intensive care, he had two attendants, which is standard. He was recommended to take it easy and his deputised replacement is covering for him - unknown how long that will last.

He initially played down the risk, just like Prince Willian who described the virus as "hype" around the time he was in Scotland. They seemed to think that the virus in other countries was a bit of a bad movie.

Prince William to be WRU patron

Prince William is patron of the Welsh Rugby Union so he would say that while the 6 Nations was still going forward. BoJo for the same reasons too while all these events were still going ahead. Then they did an about-turn around mid March.

I want to help spread the word on Covid Toes and now the dangers of bare-bottomed farting!

And don't you even think of getting close to me with your silent farts!
It's like the Twilight Zone here sometimes! :D

I wanted to find a less biased source than conservative, libertarian F.E.E. that was linked.

Here’s a variety:
Sweden sees jump in coronavirus deaths with less restrictive guidelines under scrutiny

Sweden challenges Trump and scientific mainstream by refusing coronavirus lockdown - CNN

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/04/08/is-swedens-lax-approach-coronavirus-backfiring/

Critics question Swedish approach as coronavirus death toll reaches 1,000

I will say that “personal responsibility” said to be the basis for Sweden’s handling of coronavirus would not necessarily fly here IMO. In my state of Oregon, Governor Kate Brown requested that people not flock to the Oregon Coast at the start of spring break so as not to burden the small communities there. But they did, in droves. The following Monday, she issued the stay-at-home order. Maybe Swede’s have a “personal responsibility” gene that Americans don’t have.

So to point to Sweden as the example to follow for opening up here may not be taking everything into consideration.

Same here in UK. Schools were closed before our lockdown and everyone thought they could swamp the National parks and beaches. Week after that we got the slap on the wrist with lockdown.

Number of people dying hits 20-year high

IMO the difference may also be the presently unreported deaths in care homes that have not been in the daily CV figures.

Pedestrian access to NI forest parks to reopen

Apparently people were behaving like they were on holiday.

"Mr Poots said forest parks had been closed before as people were going to places like Tollymore and Castlewellan in County Down and behaving like “they were on holidays”."

Coronavirus: England and Wales care home deaths quadruple in a week

"Covid-19 fatalities in care homes in England and Wales have more than quadrupled in a week, rising to 1,043, according to the latest official figures.

By 10 April, more than 1,000 people were confirmed to to have died in care homes from the virus, up from 217, the previous week. The number of people who died in private homes also more than tripled, to 466.

But the latest assessment of the virus’s impact on the most vulnerable by the Office of National Statistics, released on Tuesday, remains far short of the care sector’s own warnings that many thousands more have already died.

Amid growing concern that figures underestimating the scale of the crisis in care settings may have slowed down the UK government’s response, the Department of Health and Social Care said it was trying to speed up data collection and close the 10-day time-lag in data collection."

Figures gathered from care homes by the Guardian this week show the actual death toll is considerably higher, while Care England and the National Care Forum, which represent home operators, have estimated that 7,500 and 4,000 residents may have already died from Covid-19. The official figures rely on death certificates, which can take 11 days to process and may not always include Covid-19 as a cause of death, sometimes including deaths from flu, pneumonia or other underlying causes."

Potentially graphic and/or disgusting

This is interesting. It is known UK were late stopping some major sporting events. This Liverpool game was on 11 March. A week later we were being asked to social distance. A week after that we were in permanent lockdown.

Seattle was among the first US epicenters for COVID-19 and the match went on.

Why the Seattle Sounders game March 7 went on despite coronavirus emergency

Duchin sent his email 28 hours before the Seattle Sounders, defending MLS champions and one of the league’s biggest draws, were to host a match at CenturyLink Field. No event in the coming days would generate a gathering to compare. The game would draw people from across the Puget Sound area, and maybe beyond.

In the end, the match went on. Two days after the public health department wrote on Facebook, “We are making a recommendation to postpone or cancel events greater than 10-50 people,” officials in King County allowed a soccer match to be held with 33,000 fans, squeezed together.

Coronavirus 'circulating less than expected'

Coronavirus in Wales is circulating less than had been expected when a target of 5,000 tests per day by mid-April was first announced, Health Minister Vaughan Gething has said.

The target, now abandoned, was set at the end of March.

He said ministers thought the rate of the virus's circulation in Wales would be "much higher".

Opposition parties have criticised the Welsh Government for failing to meet the target and then ditching it.

Currently Wales is able to run 1,300 tests a-day, although not all that capacity has been used.

There were complaints that the system was overly bureaucratic and complex - in response ministers have promised to streamline it, with the help of military planners.

Meanwhile Plaid Cymru has called for a judge-led inquiry into the Welsh response to coronavirus.

I am sorry for being dense, but I don't get this:

"The 40% comes from the percentage of households with only one person, which is different from how many who lives alone."

What is the difference between those 2 things?
thinking.gif
@katydid23 If 20 people live alone, and 20 people live two and two (couples), and and 21 people live three and three (a couple with one child), it makes 61 individuals, but only 37 households (20 + 10 + 7), and 54% are one person households.

Coronavirus: Nine more deaths brings total to 584

"Another nine people in Wales have died with coronavirus - taking the total number to 584, Public Health Wales (PHW) has said.

On Monday, the latest update from PHW showed there were 276 confirmed new cases since the last count, taking the total to 7,546.

The true number is likely to be higher as many people with symptoms are not tested.

The latest statistics show there have been 16,060 UK deaths with coronavirus.

Coronavirus deaths in Wales

Updated daily at 14:00 BST
Source: Public Health Wales, 20 April 2020
Dr Giri Shankar, incident director at PHW, said based on the new case numbers there was "emerging evidence suggesting a levelling-off" which may be an indication of the effectiveness of lockdown measures.

"However, it is still too early to tell for sure, and it is too soon to end the current social distancing rules," he said.

"PHW continues to fully support the extension of lockdown measures, which is essential to avoid reversing the gains we have made in slowing the spread of this virus, protecting our NHS, and saving lives."

The health body has also started publishing a breakdown of where the deaths occurred in Wales.

The highest number of deaths - 200 - was in the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board area, which treats patients from Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Newport, Torfaen and Monmouthshire. Five more have been reported on Monday.

But PHW said the true number of deaths across the country "will be higher" as the data only includes patients who died in hospital and in some care homes with Covid-19, and had their test results confirmed by a lab.

In the Cardiff and Vale health board area, 138 people have died after testing positive for Covid-19, the figures show, while 139 have died in the area covered by Cwm Taf Morgannwg health board.

In the Swansea Bay health board area 94 people have died.

Figures for Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, in north Wales, and Hywel Dda and Powys health boards, have not been set out in order to protect the identity of those who have died, due to the figures being small, PHW said.

The total for these three health boards is 13 deaths.

However, Powys teaching health board said of its 121 confirmed Covid-19 cases so far that there was the need to "assume the actual figure is higher".

The health board tweeted the figures include tests on Powys residents undertaken in Wales adding: "They do not include tests on Powys residents undertaken in England.

"We continue to ask Public Health Wales and Public Health England to work together on cross-border reporting." "

My husband is a paramedic in Atlanta....this nonsense puts his life at risk and mine, as well as millions of Georgians., healthcare workers, and first responders. People don't forget when they figure out you don't care about them.

Atlanta Mayor @KeishaBottoms: "I am extremely concerned about the announcement the governor made."
"Our biggest outbreak in the state came from two funerals...for us to go back to opening up houses of worship just seems a bit premature to me," she adds. Georgia to reopen some businesses as early as Friday ABC News Live on Twitter

Savannah Mayor Van Johnson says he's "beyond disturbed" by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp's "reckless" decision to reopen some businesses this week. "It blows our minds that here in Georgia that we would have these types of rules being lifted in a time where people are still suffering." CNN on Twitter

I received a text last night from someone who works in the metro Atlanta area (not the City of Atlanta with Keisha Bottoms) and her boss, who owns a gym, wants her back at work now due to the declaration by Kemp. She is a yoga instructor.

thank you for your more intimate experience. I will certainly look at the link you have provided. Did you see the earlier article, that was added here? I found it so informative, and would appreciate your opinions. Why so many young Swedes live alone
@nhmemorymaker It's true that Swedes move away from home early, earlier than in other countries, often when they begin university studies, or as soon as they get a job where they can pay for their own living. At the age of 24 about 44% of Swedes has been, or are university students. Living in dorms, and sharing a room is not common here, some student accommodations are single rooms with a shared kitchen, but newer ones are often a room with a bath and a kitchenette in a house for only students, and at least the latter ones are counted in statistics as living on their own. (If you are interested in how students in Sweden can live, here's a link to the student "landlord" for many of the students in my own former hometown, in English: Housing to rent for students, apartments and corridor rooms. Welcome to Studentbostäder i Linköping AB

An other group who are living on their own in Sweden is older people, for example after their partner has died. Many in their 70ies, 80ies and even in their 90ies continue living on their own, and have help coming to their homes, instead of moving to some kind of home. Most of those who move to assisted living do have their own apartments, and can be statistically counted as living on their own.

Bigger than embarrassment....people are gonna die. They are gonna trust this fool and fill up the churches. Then here we go again. Cartersville, GA outbreak started in a church. Albany outbreak started at 2 large funerals and a church. It's still not under control. Atlanta is a metro that hasnt peaked. Paramedic husband said this past weekend was quiet....but most think it's the calm before the storm. This will just make it worse and could overwhelm the hospitals. They stay maxed with normal business. I dont know what data Kemp is looking at but the rest of the world's not seeing it.

I'm looking forward to the media doing a WTF article or two, or three, or four on such and looking forward to folks sharing them here.
