Sure, if it's good enough for some of the protestors to protest from the safety of their cars, then why not this.

I think we have a political climate that makes it VERY hard to say, "we could have timed this action differently", or "we can rethink this one". But someone has to act with integrity, and accept that yes, we live in a bullying culture where you will be criticized, no matter what. But showing humility and doing the right thing as a powerful person helps to tear that culture down, as there are still good people who will support you. It may also win you the support of younger people, many of whom just want to see leaders acting like adults, IMO and IME.

Thanks, very well said. It's also a strange universe when it comes to how many will die. I almost get the feeling that some will be "disappointed" if the projected high numbers of death do not come to pass, and will blame others for "over reacting" in order to achieve (fill in the latest conspiracy). The whole idea of social distancing and "stay at home" is to lower the death rate and keep hospitals functioning. Less loved ones dead should ALWAYS equal a positive, right? I hope that message can be conveyed. IMO

Farzad Mostashari, previously CDC EIS Officer

On the positive side, the curve has been flattening in case growth. That is great news, and proves that the physical distancing we have all been doing is WORKING
But we are massively undercounting the # of cases, and if we loosen up, all those undiagnosed cases will spread it.

Why do I think we are under-counting the cases?
The ratio between the number of cases and the number of deaths.

So you have to account for all the deaths that will happen among the cases by the time they finally resolve one way or another, and for this disease, it can take a month or more before the patient is either cured or dead, so another undercounting.

Under-reporting and case fatality estimates for emerging epidemics

But people are still flooding Walmart. There are so many alternatives. No?

The point is, they are not being unsafe by their actions. Whether or not I agree with them sitting in their cars is irrelevant. Jmo
The church we are discussing (the one where pastor is asking people to donate their stimulus money) isn't giving services to people siting in their cars. In fact they use buses to bus people into the service. And then those people go inside the church.

Agree. I think this is making me as sad as the fear.
Absolutely!

I see lots of heels digging in, and that's not the way to move forward. Literally not the way.

Going to cocoon for awhile....

Coronavirus: UK hospital deaths reach 16,060 after 596 more patients die

Another 596 people have died with coronavirus in UK hospitals - the smallest increase in nearly two weeks.

The Department of Health announced the latest increase, with 16,060 people with COVID-19 - the disease caused by coronavirus - now confirmed to have died in hospital across the four home nations.

NHS England announced another 482 deaths in hospitals in England, taking the country's total to 14,400.

Scotland saw a further 10 deaths, Wales 41 and Northern Ireland 1.

According to each home nation's health authorities, the number of deaths in hospitals now stands at:

  • England - 14,400
  • Scotland - 903
  • Wales - 475
  • Northern Ireland - 194
Great news. I hope the daily deaths continue to fall. (The Wales total was 534 yesterday, I noted, so maybe that should be 575 not 475.)

And how exactly are they planning on re-opening? Proper PPE is nearly impossible to buy. Lysol and chlorox have disappeared. Testing is still very limited. Asymptomatic people can spread it, so taking temperatures will get companies nowhere. How exactly can one be safer under these conditions?

With the President advocating the reopening it is hard to criticise the protesters really.

Trump unveils plan to reopen states in phases

No, it’s not really hard to criticize the protestors. :) The governor of Oregon has announced her plan to reopen in stages when certain conditions are met. It is very much aligned with the President’s plan. So yes, I can criticize the protesters who want the governor to open the state up immediately because they believe her stay-at-home order “violates their constitutional rights.” For the greater good of all Oregon citizens, it seems to me they can give her a chance to proceed with the plan rather than be disruptive to advance their own agenda. The objections protesters have in Michigan are not applicable in Oregon, as I explained in my earlier post. JMO

PORTLAND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Gov. Kate Brown issued generally positive comments Thursday regarding President Trump’s plan to reopen America, saying it's similar to the cautious approach she'd laid out earlier this week.

Gov. Brown welcomes President Trump's guidelines for reopening U.S. - KTVZ

Portland, OR—Governor Kate Brown today introduced her framework for Reopening Oregon: a plan to restart public life and business while maintaining healthy Oregon communities. The framework sets specific prerequisites based on science, which Oregon communities must meet to begin reopening, and also outlines the actions Oregon must take to move forward.

“We all want to get back to work and return to normal life as quickly as possible,” said Governor Brown. “But the truth is: the best path forward is a cautious one — a path that proceeds gradually, carefully, and incrementally. A path that relies on science and facts to determine each step forward."

In order to begin reopening communities, Oregon must first slow the growth of COVID-19, as well as acquire adequate personal protective equipment to protect health care workers and first responders. Once those prerequisites are met, Oregon can begin to reopen by:

• Ramping up COVID-19 testing capacity in every region of Oregon

• Developing robust contact tracing systems to track and contain COVID-19 cases

• Establishing a quarantine and isolation program for new cases

I am not discussing the one that buses the congregation in but the drive in one.

I am all for acquiring proper protective equipment. But exactly where could I acquire it?

I would be breaking that law big time. That governor is nuts, and drunk with power. What a sad situation. I don't blame the people of Michigan one bit for protesting.

wow never heard of something so silly

You can't buy seeds in the store. You can still order them on-line. Out of all the things to worry about, this isn't one I am much concerned about.

  • #153
Someone indicated that this was one of the main things being protested.
I think three separate things have been discussed and some may have mixed up all the separate reports.

Article in Philadelphia newspaper with quote, below. Similar to churches, some mosques are ignoring social distancing policies. I am sure there are some synagogues doing the same thing. But from what I read in the media, most churches, mosques and synagogues are doing their best to follow public health policies on social distancing.

"There’s not going to be changes in the Ramadan schedule, we are going to be doing Ramadan everyday — feeding the people all 30 days, making extra prayers, reading the Quran – we’re not changing our Ramadan schedule, not one bit,” he said. “I’m more worried about being shot or killed than coronavirus.”

“We are not closing,” he said. “We are not going to allow them to tell us when to stop praying. We need to pray now more than and ever.”

So they agree with the president rather than the governor, so nothing new. Oregon is one of the states with less than 2,500 cases so they have a point IMO.

Oregon 1,844 cases 72 Deaths

Kinda amusing headline...
“Protestors Shun Stay-at-Home Order in Minnesota”

Well, with everything closed, where are they going to go except to a protest?

US District Court Judge John W. Broomes, appointed by President Donald Trump in 2017, wrote in a four-page order that the state cannot enforce its April 7 stay-at-home order “prohibiting religious gatherings involving more than ten attendees,” as long as the two churches use social-distancing measures.

Filed by the Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative Christian legal group, the case is one of several challenges by religious organizations in the past couple weeks that attempt to block social-distancing and shelter-in-place orders. The group has contended the rules can unfairly punish people of faith.

In an effort to support the group’s efforts, the Trump administration on Tuesday filed in court in Mississippi to help challenge a ban on drive-in church services.

In Kansas, the First Baptist Church of Dodge City and Calvary Baptist Church of Junction City had sued on Thursday to challenge the governor’s April 7 executive order that largely banned public assemblies over 10 people. That state’s ban didn’t provide an exemption for religious groups, even though it explicitly allowed bars and restaurants to stay open if they take social-distancing measures. Shopping malls and libraries were also allowed to remain open.

IMO....SHE DIDN'T ANSWER THE QUESTION. FROM MY READING MOST EPIDEMIOLOGISTS BELIEVE A SECOND WAVE IS POSSIBLE AND PROBABLE....TO THEIR DEFENSE, THEY DON'T REALLY KNOW FOR SURE.
---------------------------------------------------

“We believe it’s been enough in a whole series of outbreak areas,” Dr. Deborah Birx tells @GStephanopoulos on whether efforts to ramp up testing are "enough to prevent a second wave."
“We're working on expanding testing strategy across the United States.”

Yes you can buy them online..however the better varieties, e.g. taste, dependability, harvest requirements, are pretty much sold out.

Today is a tragic rememberance date for our state. I was there. One of the first responders. I have terrible memories standing next to firefighters. I’m sad we won’t be able to have our annual ceremony as we have for the last twenty five years.

On April 19, 1995, a truck bomb decimated the north face of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. The blast killed 168 people, including 19 children, and injured hundreds.

A remembrance ceremony planned for Sunday at the Oklahoma City National Memorial Museum was canceled because the state is under a stay-at-home order in an attempt to stem the spread of the coronavirus. Instead, an hour-long service will be broadcast live on television networks in Oklahoma City and Tulsa as well as the museum website and Facebook page starting at 9 a.m

Today is also Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775 Anniversary Day........A great day in American history......moo
