A 'Bitter Pill': Oktoberfest Canceled Due To Coronavirus

Yet another famous event has fallen victim to the coronavirus pandemic. On Tuesday, German officials announced that this year's Oktoberfest has been canceled.

The annual event in the Bavarian capital of Munich is the world's largest beer and folk festival, attracting more than 6 million visitors each year.

But public safety concerns over the coronavirus pandemic outweigh the benefits of hosting this year's festival, local and state officials said. It was scheduled to take place from Sept. 19 through Oct. 4.

"The risk is quite simply too high," Bavarian Minister President Markus Söder said during a press conference on Tuesday.

@I’m Just Here made a fabulous post here:
This post is a reply to the older person that is feeling blah - know more than likely alot of people young and old are feeling blah at times as well. It is a stressful time we are all going through. What may help is to limit ones self from the Covid news to once or twice a day. Have a morning routine taking care of your shower, hair, teeth and a healthy bit to eat. Do some light arms, legs, stretches or go on a short walk, remember to inhale fresh air hold it then breath slowly out several times. Oxygen is good! Order a new magazine or a new tea flavor. Sort out a stash of pictures and order a photo album if needed. There are many fun things on the internet such as a tour of flower gardens in the US or various countries. Sit outside or by the window and watch/listen to birds then try to identify them. Find your state bird? Put a feeder up, a bird bath. Write the name of the birds down. Keep a fun list of to do! If you have no appetite eat small amounts of healthy food, cottage cheese with canned or fresh peaches, cup of soup, drink enough water. Call a friend, facetime family write a story from your childhood for a grandchild or someone you love. Remember to accept it is ok to feel blah nothing is wrong with you. Sometimes a person needs to pull themselves together and make small changes

Here are some additional comments from Dr. Mike and Dr. Maria from April 15 in response to a reporter’s question about the mental effects of lockdowns / source:

“Dr. Michael J. Ryan: (28:52)
Mental health, we have issued guidance on mental health and how to manage mental health. It’s been one of the big issues as you’ve seen in social media. There’s a huge outpouring of support for people. I think communities are supporting each other. There’s been an incredible outpouring of solidarity between people. While we may be physically isolated, I actually have seen amazing stories of us not being socially isolated. It is tough. It’s not easy and it’s something we must endure. We must endure until we have in place the other measures to suppress this disease.

We’ve said it very clearly to governments, we must work really hard now to accelerate the investments we need in public health infrastructure and in community engagement and education and having a hospital system capable of dealing with cases. If we do that, we will be able to make our way out of these more draconian lockdowns. This is something that the World Health Organization wants so badly with the rest of the world.

Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove: (29:59)
Yes. Thank you. As you’ve heard us say, we’ve stopped saying social distance, we’ve been saying physical distancing because it’s important to remain physically separate but socially connected. There’s a lot of ways that you can look after your own mental health and the mental health of your family during these very difficult times. Whether you are adhering to a stay-at-home order or you are isolated yourself, there’s a lot of things that you can do. There’s no lockdown on laughter. There’s no lockdown on talking to your family and finding ways to connect. And especially through different religious periods that are coming up, there’s ways in which you can connect with family using technology that you may not have used previously.

Make sure you exercise any way that you can, whether it’s at home and doing a class, whether it’s doing yoga, something to keep yourself physically active. Make sure you, if you meditate, find ways to meditate or find ways to turn the news off and have some time for yourself, listen to some music, read a story, play with your kids. Just find ways in which you can remain socially connected with others while you’re remaining physically apart.”

I think that gets the record for farthest-off event to be cancelled, that I've encountered anyway. Maybe they don't want people to buy plane tix.

I bet Americans somewhere will still try to have their Oktoberfest celebrations.

Wow. Boy do I disagree. You still need a mask.

1. Stay home.
2. If you go out, wear a mask AND
3. Stay 6 feet away from others if you can.

If medically fragile, get a better mask and stay more feet away.

No, people do not have to get closer together to hear. They can speak louder. We're putting stripes on walkways and in other ways teaching people what 6 feet means. Of course, no one wants to wear a mask - but if you're going to walk through the viral wake of a bunch of other people (no one is keeping 6 feet apart in every direction), you are risking a lot if you don't wear a mask.

I don't know who Canadians are following, and I've been posting citations, but am getting pretty worn out. Ultimately, if you can't see the common sense reason to wear a mask, don't wear one.

But as long as you don't, I'm staying home longer, doctors are not going to want to see you in their offices, in California you will have a harder time getting a CV test, etc. Doctors want you to wear masks and they are on the front lines.

Canada hasn't had the situation that we've had in Washington, New York, San Francisco, New Orleans, most of Michigan or Los Angeles. And I hope you don't.

But if you do, trust me. You should wear a mask. Wear a mask if there's a wildfire near your house, wear a mask if you're going out in a crowded public place or going to be in a room with other people you don't know. Some scientists say 20 feet is still too close.

Wear a mask. And do your research yourself, don't depend on those experts, because truly, I believe the literature clearly states otherwise.

Los Angeles has mandated it (are you saying that USC and UCLA are filled with non-experts? They have WAY more experience with Covid, at this point than some nations). The county where I'm currently hunkered down does not require it (because the rates are similar to Canada's).

At the same time, perhaps you're young and can withstand getting this. In that case, don't wear a mask.

I strongly disagree too. And I'm Canadian.

DERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WHP) - The Hershey Company announced Friday that it is committing $1 million to acquire, install and staff a new manufacturing line dedicated to producing face masks.

The new line, which will be capable of producing up to 45,000 masks per day, will start operating near the end of May.

“Supporting our communities in difficult times is part of our legacy, and an important value that our current employees share,” said Michele Buck, president and CEO of The Hershey Company. “From the building projects that created local jobs during the Great Depression, to producing military rations during World War II, we take great pride in making a difference where we can.”

According to a press release from the company, Hershey has donated millions in cash and product to benefit community safety net organizations and a variety of healthcare organizations.

… snipped to reply...Bats have thousands of different coronaviruses. Other animals have them too and since man is fragmenting these animals habitats we will be exposed to more of them...

Looks like we will be getting many more novel viruses if this is true. JMO

Bat Soup Anyone?
This is how I started to become aware, and which led to me stocking up on food earlier than some. Thread 1 was started by @Amonet... I want to thank you.

Maybe they believe what president is saying?
They'd have to be prophetic. From the above article BBM:
Accidents with household cleaning products appear to have sharply increased in recent weeks, according to doctors who monitor activity at poison call centers. On Monday, the CDC reported an alarming trend of growing calls to poison control centers, and a significant increase in accidental exposures to household cleaners and disinfectants.

What's going to happen to us when it's a novel coronavirus from squirrels? I got those things in my suburban back yard.

Along with opossums, raccoons, feral cats and skunks. Are they all full of coronaviruses that could jump to us humans next year?

I'm sure some of them are/were clairvoyants that lacked common sense. JMO

You have a lot of wild life around you compared to me.

All the days I've not gone down to the underground garage to visit my car, birds have been pooping on it. Every spring they nest in the light fixture over my car or just sit there pooping. I relate to that current Progressive commercial of Flo trying to scare the bird away. They aren't afraid. Cleaning it off is disgusting and I used to have several big birds, but mine were actually paper trained. Honest.

That Bat Soup video surprised me that they don't even chop it up and prepare and clean it like we would a chicken.

I'm beginning to give up after reading here today.

Malaria drugs, no good.

Chinese lab made a mistake? Nope, natural occurrence that will happen again because of human encroachment.

JMO

Same. And no hope of getting out of lock down until the end of May, at the earliest. Then there's the second wave.

I think that gets the record for farthest-off event to be cancelled, that I've encountered anyway. Maybe they don't want people to buy plane tix.

Most of the attendees (90%) are European, arrive by short haul or train. I think it's about 10% Americans.

Germany typically doesn't have an indoor crowded "pub" culture, they have a "beer garden" culture that involves more physical distance and more walking around in a partly outside area. So in October, the season for that ends, and they have a huge festival (have done so for more than 2oo years) to celebrate the changing of the season to more indoor activities and family events.

At least, that's what Germans and others (like Danes and Dutch and British) have told me, along with students who've gone in the past (Spring Break in the opposite season for some well-heeled American students).

They just don't want people crowding together in stadiums, sporting events, streets, squares - all the things that usually happen in Oktoberfest. There are parades and bandstands and dancing and such.

Having virtually shut down CV19, Germany doesn't want to get a flare up due to this massive festival.
